Over the years, the Fern has come to represent to many people the highest achievements of the human spirit, the grandest accomplishments of empires, and the will to produce the most sublime works of art. The ancient custom of sealing a peace pact with a fern frond is well known. When the ancient Pejorians competed in athletic games, the winner was always given a ring of fern fronds to wear on the head. The imperial palaces of Draobmud were famous for their hanging fern gardens.

It is for all of these reasons, and for the fact that potted ferns tend to survive well in dimly lit rooms, that we of the Fern d'Or committee chose the fern to represent those websites that we feel exemplify all that is good and important in webpage design.

Some have claimed that the only consideration we have in choosing award winning sites is that they were designed by our friends. Our response is simple: "That's no way to make friends, now is it?"
