If You Can Add, What Can You Learn About Yourself ?? ....

The Greek philosopher Pythagoras is accredited with creating this system of divinational practice. He found that the four musical intervals known at that time could be expressed in ratios between the numbers 1 thru 4 _and_ that 1, 2, 3, and 4 totaled 10, a number that is felt to represent the material and metaphysical realms (perfection) from which everything stems from. He figured that if the four notes could be expressed numerically then all creation could be as well. He and other philosophers also thought that the numbers possessed individual qualities and even divided them not only odd (assentation, creativity, power) and even (wholeness, stability, weakness) but also theorized that the odd were masculine (generative part) and the even as feminine (openings).

The Kabbalists expanded this idea and attached numerical values to the letters of their alphabet. They were known to use numbers in magickal squares, that were used by many over the years as amulets or talismans, as well as to create Names Of Power (geomantria) to be used in rituals . As technology advanced with the introduction of things such as electricity, the values ascribed to numbers became also ascribed to energy vibrations.

In essence, all names and words and even numbers themselves are reduced down mathematically to one figure whish is said to relate to certain characteristics that influences one's life. Numerology can be utilized in the following manners:

A) A person's character (i.e. assessment of weaknesses and strengths as well as natural gifts/talents)
B) Prediction of one's fate or future (i.e. determining the best places to live, the best times to
make decisions or take action, et al)
and, C) Can be used in selection of partners (i.e. business, social, and/or marital)

Now although tagged as being one of the simpler methods of divination, I found that there are many schools of thoughts on exactly how to do this. I have tried to list what I could as there are several methods to do this form of divination, although there are some more indepth, detailed offshoots of these handful of examples I will list that you can learn about thru various books on the market.

One is the modern system that uses the following chart to assign letters to numbers :
123456789
ABCDEFGHI
JKLMNOPQR
STUVWXYZ

There are also four pairs of letters which have special values placed upon by the ancient Greeks, they are as follows :
ENGLISHGREEKVALUE
THTheta8
PHPhi3
CHChi4
PSPsi5
(i.e. Theodore would be treated as Th being 8 rather than t + h separate values added together ... so it would 8 + 5 + 6 + 4 + 6 + 9 + 5 rather than 2 + 8 + 5 + 6 + 4 + 6 + 9 + 5)

EXAMPLE : According to this method, Secretive becomes 1 + 5 + 3 + 9 + 5 + 2 + 9 + 4 + 5 which equals 43 which is then added (4 +3) to become a single digit. The only numbers that are not reduced further are those that total up to 11, 22, or 33 which are regarded as being "master numbers" of spirituality. In the case of my IRC nickname, the number is 7 and I would use the following charts to look up its qualities.

BUT, let me point out that not all numerologists agree with the numerical placement on the English alphabet. Their reasoning is that the letters of the English alphabet have never had numerical values attached to the them and even in the Roman alphabet, from which English letter forms were mainly derived from, only six letters (M, D, C, V, X, and I) were of numerical significance. So what is felt was needed was a system to correlate the vowels and the consonants of the English alphabet, and thus the numerical equivalents, of the Hebrew alphabet. (Refer back to mentioning prior of the Kabbalists mystical system of the Power of a Name (number-in-your-name).) Solving this "argument" was not an easy task ... while there are 21 consonants and five vowels in the English alphabet, there are only 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. Then add to this that certain letters in the Hebrew alphabet have more than one English equivalent (i.e. vau is roughly equal to both V and W.) while others have *no* English equivalent.

The result was that the numerical values of only 21 English letters can be derived from Hebrew, leaving five letters unaccounted for (E, I, J, O, and X). Fortunately for numerologists, equivalents to these letters can be derived from Greek letters, which had numerical significance like the Hebrew already attached to them :
E is taken to be the equivalent of Epsilon (numerical value 5),
I and J are thought to be equivalent of the Greek Letter Iota (numerical value of 10, 1 + 0 = 1),
O is taken to be equivalent to Omicron (value of 70, 7 + 0 = 7),
and lastly, X is thought to be the equivalent to XI (numerical value of 60, 6 + 0 = 6).
So here is the numerical values chart of English letters in accordance to the derivations from he Hebrew and Greek alphabets :
12345678
ABCDEUOF
IKGMHVZP
QRLTNW
JSX
Y

So according to this example, Secretive would break down like this : 3 + 5 + 3 + 2 + 5 + 4 + 1 + 6 + 5 = 31 = 3 +1 = 4. (having fun yet? *chuckle*) There was any notation in my sources about wether TH and such previous pointed out pairings are given one value or treated as separate letters.

So already we have one method split into two schools of thought .. and I hope I am not losing you as I try to detail this out for you to try your hand at them.

These basic qualities are interpreted and expounded upon. One's character may be interpreted by the full name given at birth numerical value: a) the number of the Christian name (Mary Jane, though many numerologists use only the first name) and b) the number of the surname (Smith, and if a married woman the maiden names is used in the primary tabulations and the married name would be added into as well, though the marriage doesn't affect the woman's character to change completely, her mental and outlook conditions are modified as a result though). These two form the Personality Number. The Birth path (destiny) Number is revealed by the birth date (i.e. May 24, 1959 = 5 + 2+ 4+ 1+ 9 + 5 + 9 = 35 = 3 + 5 = 8). Add all three sets of numbers together, and you obtain the primary Number Of Character. Many numerologists say it is possible to alter one's character and destiny to more favorable numbers merely by changing of one's name. In magickal practices, one's magickal name is to equal the same as the birth number (in using the birth number example above, this would then have the person seek a suitable name that also added up to 8)

Now lets do a fictional person's calculations using the fist numerical/alphabetical value chart ... Full name and birth date : Chartreuse Pinkie White ; September 14, 1907

ok... Number of character :
Birthday : (9 + 14 + 1907 = 1930 = 1 + 9 + 3 + 0 = 13 = 1+ 3) = 4
Name : Pinkie (*the one commonly used) (7 + 9 + 5 + 2 + 9 + 5 = 37 = 3 + 7 = 10 = 1 + 0 ) = 1
White (5 + 8 + 9 + 2 + 5 = 29 = 2 + 9 = 11 = 1 + 1) = 2
total name number = 3 plus the birth date = 4 becomes the total for the Number of Character = 7

Secondary Character Influences :
Middle Name : Chartreuse (*not commonly used) (3 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 2 + 9 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 5 = 46 = 4 + 6 ) = 10 (*NOT* REDUCED DOWN)

It is interesting to note that some folks weren't given a middle name, in these cases there isn't a Secondary Character Influence Number, but then look at the person and you will notice that they are generally pretty well clear cut, and frequently most successful. Look at this list of some such folks and note their vivid personalities : William Shakespeare, John Milton, and Arthur Wellesly (Duke of Wellington). BUT if the middle name (or whatever) used has a value that falls into the primary number range, we *must* convert them over to a secondary number as according to the following :

1     becomes     10
2     becomes     11
3     becomes     12
4     becomes     13
5     becomes     14
6     becomes     15
7     becomes     16
8     becomes     17
9     becomes     18

Now taking the second numerical alphabetical chart, let me show you yet another method of calculations and such. Let's take Chartreuse Pinkie White again, and this time we note that she goes by Pinkie rather than Chartreuse, so

Pinkie = 8 + 1 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 5 = 22
White = 6 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 5 = 21
Adding the Pinkie value to the White one, we get 43 = 4 + 3 = 7 for the Key Number 9 whole person). Now then we do this
Pinkie (vowels only ) = 1 + 1 + 5 = 7
White (vowels only) = 1 + 5 = 6
This added together gives us 13 = 1 + 3 = 4 for the Heart Number (inner personality). And lastly we take only the constonant this time
Pinkie = 8 + 5 + 2 = 15
White = 6 + 5 + 4 = 15
added together becomes 30 = 3 + 0 = 3 for the Personality Number (outward impressions). This method does not incorporate the use of the Secondary Numbers, but holds true to the 11 and 22 numbers being given special significance and not reduced down. The Birth Number is found the same way as above (month + day + year = total that is reduced down) and some say it should also harmonize or coincide with either the Heart or Personality Number for you be content inside.

In the first example, Pinkie White has a the following numbers :

Birth Number : 4
Name Number : 3
Character Number : 7
Secondary Character Number : 10
And in the second example, she has these numbers :
Birth Number : 4
Key Number : 7
Heart Number : 4
Personality Number : 3

I have listed some trivial information about the numbers as well characteristics and such associated to them in this science for you to use in interpreting - and since this page opened into a separate viewing window, you can use this window to peruse thru the charts linked here and not lose your place in the divination page link! So use the charts on this page to figure up your name's numerical value and then read on to find out it could be interpreted ...

There is another method called Fate Years or Vertical Tabulation you can try your hand at it also if you like (to see something weird - try the nationally celebrated "birth date" of the United States - July 4, 1776 - and then compare those tabulations with just using the recognized year of the "birth" of the United States - 1776. Freaky eh?). Easier to understand in showing you what it is done, though many numerologists these days don't put much stock on this format so if you get a numerological reading, don't expect the reader to always include this morsel of thought.

OK.. using the birth date example above of May 24, 1959, you do this :

1959 Year
+      1
+      9
+      5
+      9
Which adds up to
1983 figuring out to be a year of great importance to the individual.
+      1
+      9
+      8
+      3
Which adds up to
1994 would be the next following year of importance ... and so on.
In the above demonstration, the individual ascertains that these two years were important changing years in their life. The first being the start of a family with the birth of the first child, the latter being the change of custodial roles in regards to the family. So they are slightly curious as to what 2017 will hold in store for them.

Another example of the above method is using an important date as a basis point :

1714 George I ascended to the throne
+  13 (1 + 7 + 1 + 4)
1727 George II ascended to the throne
+  17 (1 + 7 + 2 + 7)
1744 Preparation for Second Jacobite Rising
+  16 (1+ 7 + 4 + 4)
1760 George III ascended to the throne

OR

Queen Victoria born in 1819, which figures out to be 19, added to the birth year equals 1838. This was the year of her coronation. Curious ain't it how this works out? *grin*

I hope I didn't lose you too much in this discussion about numerology. It is really a quite simple process to toy with, as it deals with basic addition and such. There are some workbooks and deeper detailing about this subject available at about any bookstore
