"Portable Document Format (PDF)" is a form of electronic distribution of Documents developed by Adobe across different computer platforms. Distribution of formatted documents in the form of .pdf files is becoming increasingly popular on the Internet. Adobe distributes a reader of pdf files called Adobe Acrobat FREE for different computer operating systems.

The text of the documents can use one of the standard fonts commonly available in different OS. In this case, the Adobe Acrobat Reader uses Adobe fonts or the nearest equivalent fonts available locally. Alternatively, the font itself can be embedded in the pdf file. In this case, the Acrobat Reader uses the embedded font to display the text as originally formatted on all computer platforms for which Acrobat Reader is available. The disadvantage is that the size of the pdf file is slightly large but the advantage is that the file can be read on all computers even if the font used is not available locally. The latter approach is very attractive for distribution of Tamil documents with appropriate text formatting.

To illustrate the utility of this mode of distribution of tamil electronic texts, we are providing here some sample pdf files containing tamil texts. You are strongly encouraged to download them and try to view them on whatever computer system you use at office or at home. You can use freely available Acrobat Reader to view and print the files without the need to worries as to whether you have the relevant font in your computer or not. Note: The tamil font used to prepare these pdf files are "embedded" and hence you should be able to view these pdf files without the explicit need to have the fonts installed in your computer system.
