Project:
Where in the World?
Tuesday February 3, 1998
At the end of this week you will have a quiz over your progress
on this project and your ability to use email. Since I will be at
the conference this week, you are to email your answers to me at khcole@hotmail.com no later than this Friday, February 6th. The quiz's four
questions are listed below.Write all answers using complete
sentences giving not only the answers, but also paraphrasing the
questions for full credit.
1.What is the name of the school about which you are writing the report, and where (city, country) is it located?
2.What is the URL (web address) of the school? (http://.....)
3.What is the latitude and longitude of the school?
4. How far, exactly, is the school from Faubion Middle School?
Also, as part of your quiz grade, you are to send the answers through email to me personally. If you have not been able send email by now, Ask Ms. Nelson or one of your fellow students to assist you. Detailed help on how to find the answers to these questions is given below. The examples included at the end of each help section are how you could write the answer using complete sentences and paraphrasing the question if your project school was Faubion Middle School.
Help with question # 1:
While you are searching the Web to find the school that you are
going to write about make sure that you find the name of the city
and country where it is located. If you can't get this
information from the Web Site, then you need to look for another
school.
Example answer # 1:
Faubion Middle School is located in McKinney, Texas, USA.
McKinney Texas is about 30 miles north of Dallas Texas.
Help with question # 2:
When you are looking for schools on the Web, make sure that you
record the school's URL (that stands for Uniform Resource
Locator). You can find it in the location bar above. As an
example, this page's URL is http://www.oocities.org/~kcole/et1assgn4.html .
Example answer # 2:
The URL for Faubion Middle School is at http://www.oocities.org/~kcole/fmshmpg.htm.
Help with question # 3: The latitude and the longitude of any
place on Earth will tell you exactly where on the globe that
place is located. If you can't find the latitude and the
longitude on the school's Web site, and I doubt that you will,
you can find the latitude and longitude of any city, town, or
small village in the world in the World Atlas on my desk. You
will need this information as well as the latitude and longitude
of Faubion Middle School to answer question # 4.
Example answer # 3:
Faubion Middle School is located at:
Latitude: 33° 11' 51" N and Longitude: 96° 36' 54" W
Help with
question # 4: Once you find the
latitude and the longitude of your school's town, go to How far is
it? and enter the latitude and
longitude for Faubion Middle School and for your school. Note how
the information should be entered: 33:11:51N 96:36:54W for Faubion. Enter the latitude and the longitude for
your project school in the same manner. Since we are looking for
the distance from Faubion Middle School, I will use the site for
Kungsmadskolan in Vaxjo, Sweden which has a latitude of 57:53:00N
and longitude 15:55:00E.
Example answer # 4:
Kungsmandskolan in Vaxjo, Sweden
is 5052 miles, 8131 km, or 4390 nautical miles from Faubion
Middle School according to How far is
it?
After you have the answers to the above questions, send your answers to me at khcole@hotmail.com.
Project Report Information
The following information should be included in your completed report. The report will be due at the end of next week. Your report should be written using Microsoft Word, saved on a disk, then printed. Your completed report should be in essay form using paragraphs and complete sentences. Here are some things which you should include your report.
1. Your email address (must be exact, mine is khcole@hotmail.com), the URL (Web address), and email address of the school in your report.
2. As part of this assignment, you are to compare your school to another student's school. Tell me about their school. Where is it? What are some of the similarities and differences between the two schools?
3. Send an email to your school. You probably won't get a reply before your report is due. Include the email address where you attempted to contact the school in your report (see question # 1). If you do get a reply, include who it is from and what their position is with the school (student, teacher, principal, etc.).
4. What language is spoken at your project's school. What is the main language of the country where your school is located. Are there more than one language used in the school? Example: at Faubion we speak in English, but many students speak Spanish.
5.What are the ages of most of the students at your project's school? What sports do they participate in school, as well as outside of school. What are some of the hobbies of the students.
6. How is this school similar to Faubion? How is it different?
Your report should be completed by the end of next week. When I return next Monday, be prepared to tell me what you need to do to complete your report.
