Out of Print Books
Asatru
- Rites and Religion of the Anglo-Saxons by Gale Owen. Out of Print. This book, if you can get it, is an excellent introduction to an often-neglected "room" of the Asatru house. -- MAO
- The Well and the Tree: World and Time in Early Germanic Culture, by Paul C. Bauschatz. No one does a better job of analyzing the Norse understanding of time and Wyrd. You should read his analysis of why there is really only one Norn. It will make your brain expand. It is definitely worth the trouble to track it down.-- MAO
Fiction
- The Wolf and the Raven, by Diana Paxson. Book one in the Wodan's Children trilogy, the retelling of the Volsung Saga. Honestly one of the most enjoyable pieces of fiction I've read in a long time.
- Dragons of the Rhine, by Diana Paxson. Book two in the Wodan's Children trilogy.
- The Lord of Horses, by Diana Paxson. Book three in the Wodan's Children trilogy.
- Atilla's Treasure, Stephen Grundy (a.k.a. Kveldulf Gundarrson).
Anthropology, History, and Specific Religions
- Road to Hel. Unfortunately, out of print. Run, don't walk to your local university library to see if they have a copy. TONS of info on how the Norse perceived the afterlife, as well as info on funerary rites, burial sites and the Norse gods of death. There is some overlap between Lost Beliefs of Northern Europe and Road to Hel. --JM
- Magic, Fate, and History: The Changing Ethos of the Vikings by Rosalie H. Wax. Out of Print. In fact, I'm not sure how "in print" this book ever was. I may have the only copy not on the author's shelf. But if you do see one somewhere, grab it and don't let it get away under any circumstances. The author, an anthropologist, analyzes historical records and sagas to discover what the ethical system of the Vikings actually was and how it changed over time. It offers an excellent co unterpoint to the whole Nine Noble Virtues botch-up. -- MAO
