ONCE UPON...,
BY TINA LARSON

Once upon a time there was a young girl named Chelsey, she was a sad little girl because she had no friends. All of the other children in the village teased her and called her names; You see Chelsey was handicapped and had to use crutches to walk. So she spent day after day playing by herself with only her pet cat Samantha to keep her company.

Unbeknownst to Chelsey Samantha was a special cat; she was one of hundreds of cats a kind elf sent out into the world to brighten the lives of handicapped children. But Samatha was having a problem she had lost her magic collar and couldn’t find it anywhere, and without it she couldn’t use her magical powers. So whenever she had a chance she went out looking for the elf so he could give her a new one

Finally after weeks of searching she came upon the elf in the misty forest. She asked the elf if he would please give her a new collar so she could help Chelsey and to that the elf had replied that he couldn’t. It turns out that each collar is made especially for each cat and can’t be replaced. Samantha was devastated, what was she going to do, without the collar she was like an ordinary cat and couldn’t use her magical powers.

The elf sat and thought for a long time, trying to figure out how he could help Samantha find her collar. Melissa mouse came upon him sitting and thinking and asked him what he was doing. He explained that he was trying to find a way to help Samantha find her collar. Melissa squeaked out a solution, she told him to gather all of the forest creatures and explain to them what the problem was. She was sure that they would help find the collar; they all liked Chelsey, she was kind to them and gave them treats, and they felt sorry for her.

Thinking this was a great idea, the elf set to work gathering everyone together. Melissa was right, as soon as everyone heard what the problem was they all rushed off in search of the collar. With everyone looking for the collar it didn’t take long to find. Sally swallow found it at Crawford Crows nest; it turns out he had stolen it when Samantha took it off to wash her neck. Sally tried to take it out of the nest but couldn’t, there was a shield around it that kept her away, an evil wizard had giving Crawford the shield in exchange for some work he had done.

Sally flew back to the elf to tell him the news. Everything looked hopeless, Crawford was a mean old crow who would help no one. Even though the odds were against them Elf and Samantha went to talk to Crawford; they were hoping that he would return the collar when he heard their story. But he just laughed at them and told them to go away. Heads bowed they left him, thinking they’d never see the collar again.

Samantha went back to Chelsey and did what she could to try and make her happy. She would play with string and chase Butterflies, anything that would bring a smile, no matter how fleeting, to her face. Chelsey loved Samantha and spent all of her time with her, she was the only friend that Chelsey had. But it wasn’t enough, Samantha knew that she needed human friends too and did everything she could to try and make the other kids like her. But without the collar her attempts were futile.

One day when they were out playing in the yard they heard an awful screeching coming from the edge of the forest. Grabbing her crutches Chelsey went to investigate. She came across Crawford Crow he was tangled up in a thorny bush and couldn’t get free. He had spotted a piece of glass and had dived in to get it but the thorns grabbed onto his feathers and wouldn’t let him go. Chelsey lowered herself down and began talking to him and gently stroking his head to calm him down;as soon as he settled and stopped fighting she had no problem freeing him from the bush. Samantha sat back and smiled, she could see what the bush really was, a trap; it was really the elf, he had disguised himself to look like a bush.

The elf’s plan worked, Crawford was so grateful to Chelsey for freeing him that he returned Samantha’s collar. He did make her promise though not to tell a soul what happened, he had his pride after all. With the collar back, Samantha set about doing her job like she was sent to do. She ran around the village rubbing against all the children she could find, and set the spell. It was a simple spell really, all it did was make the kids look past Chelsey’s handicap and see the person that she was; a kind fun loving kid that everyone would be proud to call friend.

Soon Chelsey had lots of friends and no one teased her anymore. Her days were filled with happiness and laughter. But she always made sure she had time to spend with her special friend Samantha, theirs was a friendship that would last forever.

Elf also solved the collar problem he added a spell to them that made it impossible for anyone to take them away from their owner. The last thing he wanted was to have to go through that kind of adventure again.

And as always happens in fairy tales everybody lived happily ever after!
