EL PAN DE LOS MUERTOS

El Pan de los Muertos is prepared for the festivities for the Days of the Dead on November 1st and 2nd. Following is a recipe that can be used in the classroom. Individual students make this and bring it in for a "celebration" in the classroom.

Ingredients and directions

1/2 cup of sugar
1 t. salt
1 T anise seed
2 packages of dry yeast
1/2 cup of milk
1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup of butter
4 eggs
3 to 4 1/2 cups of flour

Mix all of the dry ingredients together except for the flour. In a small pan, heat the milk, water and butter. Add the liquid mixture to the dry mixture. Beat well. Mix in the eggs and 1 1/2 cup of flour. Beat well. Put in the rest of the flour little by little. Knead the mixture on a floured board for 9-10 minutes. Put the dough in a greased bowl and let rise until it is doubled in size (approximately and hour to hour and a half). Punch the dough down and reshape. Pull away a small amount of dough to make "bone" shapes to decorate the top of the bread. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes. After baking, sprinkle with sugar. ENJOY!!!
