HOW TO MAKE PAPEL AMATE


These paintings are examples of PAPEL AMATE which are traditionally made from the bark of the ficus tree in the state of Puebla. Also known as historias, these paintings tell the stories of everyday life in villages amd nature. Following are directions to "make" papel amate from regular brown grocery bags.
MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Brown paper bags
2. Water and a container
3. Tempra Paints and brushes
4. Scissors
Cut the paper bags to the desired size for the painting. Crumple the paper up and dip in water and saturate. Keeping the paper crumpled, squeeze out the excess water and set it aside to dry overnight.
Flatten out the paper. Sketch drawing on the paper and then paint in bright colors.
