THE Pioneer Days

One long boring day in school I was learning Algebra. I was sooooo bored. Finally we took out our History text books and started reading about pioneer's . I thought it was quite interesting . How they described the way they build houses and clear land. It sounded easy. Then my teacher assigned me a project on how to make a log cabin. It was easy so then I thought it would be easy to do a regular one.

That night I told my mom about it and she told me that it was not as easy as it sounds. I just kept on thinking that it was easy and that I could do it any time. Later on I went to bed. I layed there just staring at the wall, it was pitch black, I couldn't see anything. I closed my eyes and conked out right away.

I woke up from the sounds of men yelling. I looked around and I was on a boat. My mom was there be side me in an old unfashionable dress. My dad and me and my two brothers were older. We were dressed awful and we were holding large bags, about two each. The boat was crowded, it felt like we were all in a big shower when waves hit us. I was wearing a similar one. I asked her where we were. She told me we were coming from England and we were almost in Fort York. She told me shut my mouth because she thought I knew what was going on and she did not like to talk about it.

It was like I traveled back through time and my family was together and we were older and lived like pioneers, it was weird.

We arrived at this lot by the beach . We just sat there and waited for a carriage that was pulled by horses. The man finally came and we loaded our stuff on. I still felt confused. Mom and I started to make a fire. We all cleared the land with the three axes we had . I really had no clue how to work it properly, so my dad and the boys did that part. Then my brothers and dad started to mark the trees with the blaze. It was still early in the after noon. I knew I was dreaming. I wanted to get out of there, it was so tiring and hard work.

After that we ate some supper . It was gross cooked over the fire. We ate this mushy stuff that I didn't want to ask what it was called because I didn't want to sound stupid. I thought my mom was a better cook. My dad and brother cut down the trees with the three axes we owned ourselves. My little brother Carter was only 11, he had just a little axe. I had never seen him work so hard. When I am not dreaming Carter plays video games with his weird friends. Turner my other brother was 13, he looked so old in those rags. My dad and Turner were good workers. Mom and I started to hall the logs to a pile. After eleven hours of non stop working we went to sleep around the fire. I went to bed hoping I would wake up in a warm bed at my mom's house.

My dad woke us up at five in the morning. My mom and brothers got up no problem. As for me I had to go to the bathroom in the bush with no toilet paper . I had asked my mom for some but she looked at me weird and said what is toilet paper? I guess I forgot were I was. The boys cut off the branches and leavess with their hatchet and axe. My dad kept on saying how lucky we were to have all the tools we had. They finished that quite fast. Then we started to saw the trees with a crosscut. Mom and I used a two men crosscut and my brother did too. My dad just used a one man saw. That took along time, I was so tired and bored. I was thinking I could become a "Miss Universe" because I could feel my arm muscles getting stronger. I was so sore. Mom kept getting blisters and Carter and Turner were whining because of the slivers. But we managed.

We were finally done, that was the most work I had ever done. Mom and I started to prepare lunch. This time we ate something familiar.......soup. It was better than that mushy stuff. I ate it fast I was really hungry.

Then we all started to put the logs together. That was really hard . All of a sudden my brothers were screaming. A log was on my dads foot, it fell when they were lifting it. I had remembered about the first aid class I took in grade six in real life. I ran in to the bush and I brought my brothers axe and made splints. I was so determined to help my dad. My mom and brothers were wondering what I was doing. But it helped , I couldn't tell if he was hurt bad or fractured it. I ripped the bottom of my dress to tie them together. My mom was yelling at because I had ripped my dress..

He was okay later he just hurt it bad because he could still walk on it. My dad was strong in that dream of mine. Anyway we finished putting the logs together, that was really hard. My mom and I started to make a late, late supper . It was very good soup.......again.

After we finished that then we started to look for clay and gather moss to stick in the cracks. It was really gross but we wanted a good house that was warm and cozy. We finished that. It was so dirty . I was so dirty, sweaty and stinky, I haven't had a shower for awhile. I felt so gross. My dad and brother took about three hours to build that outhouse. They dug a big hole and put a little building over it. It was a pretty good outhouse......at least it smelt good.......but not for long. All we needed was to put the roof on. We went to bed around 11:00 p.m. and fell a sleep fast on the uncomfortable ground.

Again we woke up early same time, five in the morning. My Dad was smart and a good worker, same with my brothers. Dad also said we would be finished by lunch if we started on the roof right away. So we did, and my Dad was correct, we finished around lunch. Our house looked great. I was never so proud of our house. Ooh wait, one thing my Dad forgot, he cut a door and the two windows. My Mom dug around in one of the bags and pulled out a sheet . We hung it on the door.

We all went inside. It smelled of pine and spruce ... it was great. We brought all of our stuff in and made it look like a house. Mom made the fire place and put a huge pot over it. We made or beds and set up the table. It was a great house. Then my brothers went outside and started to get rid of the big stumps in the ground. They burned them and dug it up . Mom and I made a big garden. I was still sweaty and gross feeling.

Then at the end of the day we all stood outside the house and we were all quiet for a minute just taking our mind off of the house and worshiped what we had completed. We went to bed in our own beds and a had a good sleep. I woke up to my brother screaming . I jumped up and looked around........I was home. Sooooooo happy to be in a bed .. I looked around and I had dirty hands and I felt sweaty. I told my mom about it, she thought I was weird but that dream was so weird. Then I thought twice about thinking how easy it was to build a whole house by hand. It was a lot of work.

We should appreciate what we can do and what other people can do.

KILLING DEAD!!

Do you ever daydream about the dead, Coming back to life, to kill people!? Well I do! Let me tell you a story about a sixteen year old girl, whose house was built on an old burial ground! After this story you won't be able to sleep! So sit back and relax, while you can! HA! HA! HA! HA!

It was Halloween night, Candy's parents were at a dinner party, so she decided to have a costume party. She was dressed as, a white hare, with a small, triangular, pink nose. She has medium auburn hair and hazel green eyes.

The door bell rang. Her excited party gang was starting to show up. In about a half an hour, the house was full, and the party was rocking. That is until the door bell rang again. Candy ran to answer it. The gigantic, brown, wooden, door, creaked as she opened it.

Standing there in the rain, was a girl. She was wearing a pair of blue jeans, and a black sweater she was soaked to the bone. Candy had never seen this girl before. Candy invited her in. The gang stopped be-bopping, and they just stared at the girl in the drenched clothes.

Candy looked into the girls' eyes. She jumped, because because the girls' eyes were a blood red. The girls' clothes were torn and she looked like she hasn't had a bath in ten years.

"Do I know you?" asked Candy in a shaky voice.

the girl didn't say a thin. She just glared into the crowd, and she walked back out into the rain. Candy just shook her head in confusion.

"Weird. "mumbled candy.

The party kept going, until the lights went out. CRASH!!! Went a crashing bolt of thunder, followed by a flicker of lightning, that light up the whole room. Candy went searching for candles and flash lights. the house was pitch black and everyone was a little frightened.

then there was an awful noise, coming from the window. The crowd was standing there, like a bunch of scared rabbits hiding from a fox. Then all of a sudden, the window busted open. Candy stared at the broken glass, but there was nothing there that caused it to break. Then she saw it.

It was the girl, who had come to the door earlier. Candy tried to call the police, but the phone was dead. The girl was walking towards Candy which her arms held high like a zombie.

Candy and the gang all screamed. Candy's gang was so terrified, that they all fled out the front door,... Leaving Candy to fend for herself. The zombie grabbed candy by the throat mumbling something, the words were: "I WARNED YOU NOW YOU'LL PAY!"

Candy was horrified, she didn't know what to do. Now more and more zombies were showing up. The zombie that had her by the throat let go. Right away candy darted for the stairs, which was a stupid idea., Because now she was trapped and surrounded by zombies. the zombies were beating here with whips and chains, finally she fell to her death.

It was nearly two a.m. in the morning when Candy's parents got home. they walked in the house, and they saw the bloody mess. Candy's mother was now worried she thought something bad happened when they were gone....which is true. Then there was that awful smelly of Candy's corpse.

Her parents rushed up stairs and into Candy's room. Her mother let out a blood curdling scream,... as she saw her sixteen year old daughter dead on the floor. the room fell to a silence, except for the weeping cry of Candy's mother. Mr. Mackay herd a grumbling noise coming from the closet. he hushed his wife so that he could listen......

All of a sudden this big , ugly, smelly zombie jumped out of the closet. it grabbed Mrs. Mackay by the hair, as it dragged her into the closet. her husband reached out to save his wife..... but it was too late she was dead.

Mr. Mackay watched in horror fearing he would be next. he needed a way out.. but how, there was zombies every where. He then saw an opened window. He dashed across the room for the window. A zombie started to chase him. Mr. Mackay tripped on a rug , and fell flat on his face.

The zombie took candy's father to the basement, where the zombies have been meeting for the past week, planning their attack on the Mackay's. He shoved Mr. Mackay into a dark corner...... then the zombie shoved a long, sharp pointed finger nail into the man's side. Blood was gushing out like a fountain spitting out water.

After Mr. Mackay was dead the zombies went back to their home, six feet under the ground.

That same night police were called to investigate. the police searched high and low, but they didn't figure out who or what killed the Mackay's. candy's friends say that you can still hear, the blood curdling screams, coming from the house that night. Candy's friend also said that Candy's house was built on and old burial ground... which is true.

Now a new family lives in the Mackay house and every thing is fine.............. Or is it?! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!

Sleep tight don't let the zombies bite!

MY LAST SUMMER

BY Danielle Daigle-Grade 8

. It all started on June 19th/98. It was my last summer and I wasn't very happy knowing that it would be my last summer that I would spend in Caramat. The reason why it was my last summer was my last summer was because I would be moving to Thunder Bay and going to to find a job and get ready for high school. It was something I wanted to do though and I didn't have to wait long either, just one more year in Caramat School and I would be on my way. I was happy that I would finally be going to high school but at the same time I would be loosing all my friends. My friend Ruth who was in the French class of our little school graduated the day before and it was pretty fun. I would have graduated with her but I took sick in grade four and missed too many days to pass the year. Ever since, I was older than the rest and that got annoying at times. That was in grade four though. Now I'm in grade eight. I hardly mention it and I don't like to talk about it much but a lot of people went through it. It doesn't bother me that much anymore because I like it here but I still miss a lot of my friends in Thunder Bay as well. The graduation was held at the rec hall of our town and there was a lot of people there. We had a lot of fun and we tried to plan out our summer sleeping at one another's house every night and just plain having fun the whole time. It was fun getting exercise riding bikes with Jen down the gravel roads to see Ruth and Nikkita. We started off the summer by doing a lot of swimming, biking and sun tanning. That was fun but the burns weren't. I got a funny looking burn on my back and Jen burnt her arms a bit. Little burns didn't slow us down though because there was too much to do in such little time.

People were coming from all over to see the Caramat Fish Derby and I was working at the time. It was fun to see all those people in Caramat. There were tourists and there were M-N-R guys and tree planters. The tree planters were at Airplane Lake and they had a dog that kept following Jen and I. The holidays are here!! I thought to myself and I knew that Paul would be coming down with Michelle and I didn't like the sound of that because all they do all day is sleep. That wasn't the worst part of it. I still hated the way they acted to me and to my friends. One time, I was walking with Paul down the straight stretch and someone was nice enough to offer a ride and Paul told me that he didn't want to go because he didn't like the way the person in the truck was driving. How pathetic!! Later on I found out that they had this thing going on about CCC and I thought it was a bunch of bull.

The reason why the M-N-R guys were down was because they had to keep the fire condition down and it got so bad that we couldn't light anything at all! The tree planters were there because they had to plant more trees to make up for the ones that burnt. I never went camping that much that year because I liked playing basket ball with a bunch of people from the town site.

There was still a lot of other things to do besides camping like sleeping at friends houses or in their campers. That was fun! The first time I slept in Ruth's camper was early in the summer and it got so cold in there because the heater didn't work that we had to in the house to warm up and sleep for another three hours. It was still fun though and Jen was the only one who caught a cold.

That and playing ball in the basket ball court was probably the best thing we did. Also, we went swimming at Airplane Lake and we spent a lot of time down there too. The water was cold at first but we all got used to it fast enough.

The week came that I was going camping with Gram, Paul, Michelle and Jennifer. We went to Paguashon Lake. Our camper was totally re-done and it looked really good. The only problem was with three teens, it doesn't stay too clean.

We went fishing quite a bit during the day with my grandfather. He had this big boat that he named "PAPA'S CANOE" and it didn't go very fast but all the more relaxing it was gliding on the water in a huge wooden boat falling asleep to the sound of water lightly splashing on the side.

When we got back, we noticed that there was a few people camping near by. Jen and I knew them but Paul and Michelle didn't. They're names were Francois and Billy-Joe and Brent. We didn't like them so we hung out with other guys from Long Lac.

We stayed a two days at camp then I had to get nature out of my mind and get malls in. Yes, it was time for back-to-school stuff. When I was there, I met up with an old friend from a school I used to go to and a few other people I knew. Andrea told me that she was going to a school called P.A.C.I and I wanted to go there too because I already knew her and a few of the people with her. When it was time to go back to good o'l Caramat. I thought about the school and what Andrea told me about it being the best school and stuff. I did some research and I found out that Paul goes to the same school and that made me almost change my mind. Michelle was kind enough to inform me that Paul thought I was going to spread roomers and I thought that was dumb. If I had my way I wouldn't want to let anyone know I knew him!!

Things started to lighten up a bit and living in Caramat was the best place to take my mind off school and Paul because he and Michelle stayed behind. I still enjoyed all of the last moments of playing basket ball, swimming and the bright, happy, fun filled days of summer. It's true, the last moments finally came although it didn't last as long as I had hoped it would, it was still the best summer I had ever had and I hope I never forget it! The last thing to do now is to finish grade eight and go to high school and who knows what other fun surprises that might be lurking around the corner. Maybe it took me this long to get this far but I hope it turns out A-O-K in the end.

The last two weeks Michelle came to see me again. I wasn't sure if she wanted to see me or the boys playing basket ball but the important thing is that I had fun and there isn't anyone to tell me otherwise.
  • The End.
