The Science of Karma

Q: Questioner D: Dadashri

Am I doing it ? ...Or ..does it just happen...?

D: Do you find yourself doing things and actions in which you have no desire at all ? Are you aware of     committing acts for which you have no desire or wish ?

Q: Yes.

D: What do you think is the reason for this ? Why does it happen in the absence of icchha...desire ?

Q:I do not know.

D: This is because this is the effect of previously performed karma...purvakarma.

People of this world treat this effect as cause, and simply do not underastand the real cause behind the effect. If I have no desire or tendency or interest towards this act and yet I did it, then do I not wonder what made me do it ? What were the causes behind actions for which I just have no inclination or current desire ? Why is it that people of the world will insist that "you did this..." if they see you doing a karma ? The world can only see what meets the eye. Whereas Gnanis...The Enlightened Ones..see that this is in fact the expression of the result...effect of the cause...

Karma...the act of doing anything.

Q: Who sent me here on this earth ? Did we get born here on this earth of our own accord or did someone sent us here ?

D: Nobody sends you anywhwere. Your own karmas send you all over. If you have done good deeds...karmas, then you go to a good place. If you have performed bad deeds ...you go to a bad place.

What is the principle of karma ?

Q: What is the real meaning of karma ?

D: Whatever you do, if you support it by saying or feeling that " I am doing it " then karma has occured. This is called binding of karma....karmabandhan. " I am not the doer " and if you know " Who is the doer ? " then you are not supporting the karma, and it falls off...nirjara. What is the scientific principle of karma ?

If you enter a stepwell and shout, " You are a thief !!" , what will the stepwell echo ? It will echo ..." You are a thief !! "Yes, exactly. If you do not like to hear such words ...you should say.." You are a baadshah...king !! And it will echo back..." You are a king !!".

This is the principle and science of karma

D: If you like vakilaat...lawyering...do the work of a lawyer. If you like doctoring...do the acts of a doctor. Karma means action ! What is reaction ? Reaction is the echo. Reaction is the effect..the result. All actions result in reaction. All seeds result in fruits. What does the vaav...stepwell tell us ? This entire world is our own projection. What you used to call karma is in fact your own project.

This whole world is the principle of karma, nothing else. You are responsible for your own bondage. All this is the result of your own projection. Even this body has been formed by you. Whatever comes to you is of your own creation. No one else ever interferes in this project of yours. For endless lives the responsiblity has been totally yours. You are whole and sole responsible for yourself.

Our own projection

From the example of the stepwell...people will say, "Aha ! All I need to do is to change what I project !" But it is not all that simple. My dear...do you have the independant shakti...willful energy to change this projection ? Yes it is correct to learn that the projection has to be changed from " you are a thief" to " you are a king ", if that is what you would like to hear. But this ability to change the nature of the projection is not fully in our hands...in our full willful control.

Yes, he is and is not fully independant.

There is more of "is not " than "is " component in here. Such is the nature of this world wherein everyone is under the influences of circumstances beyond one's control...parsatta.

One becomes independant...swatantra only after knowing the right gnan...knowledge.

How does all this projection stop ? Until he realises who he really is...Self Realisation, wherein he becomes aware of who am I in all these ? , he is committed to wondering life after life suffering the effects of good and bad projections.

These eyes are not me...This body is not me...There are many other spare parts within..., amidst all of them currently his awareness is that " I am Chandulal ". Therefore he is not able to come to any meaningful conclusion. His beleif is...This person who is doing tyaga...renouncing is me, this person who is doing tapas...penance is me, this person who is giving this spiritual discourse is me.

As long as there exists such awareness that " I am doing all these "...new projections continue. He is suffering the effects of old projects. If one understands the siddhant...principle of karma, one will know the principle of moksha...freedom.

Bondage because of wrong belief

D: What is your name ?

Q: Chandubhai.

D: Are you really Chandubhai ?

Q: How do I know ? Everyone says I am.

D: So you are not sure , are you ? Do you say , " My name is Chandubhai ? "

Q: I am sure I am Chandubhai.

D: You do not say I am Chandubhai. You say my name is Chandubhai . Do you see the difference ?

Q: That is correct. It feels like there is a difference.

D: No. Chandubhai is only a name to identify this body of yours. But who are you ? Do you think you ought to know this ?

Q: Yes. One should try to know this.

D: So, even though you are not Chandubhai, you are trying to be Chandubhai. You are taking advantage of being Chandubhai. Like saying I am the husband of this woman, uncle of this boy, and in the process of doing so you are constantly bnding new karmas. You are in Aaropit bhaav...false location feeling. As long as you falsely accuse yourself to be what you are not...you bind yopurself into new karmas. Once you have decidedly known , " Who am I ?" new karmas do not bind you.

So, even now at this moment karmas are binding you, and they are also binding you in your sleep. This is because you go into sleepstate as " I am Chandubhai ".

" I am Chandubhai ", is your wrong belief and that is why karmas are binding you.

What has the Lord called the biggest of the biggest karma ?To go to bed saying " I am Chandubhai ", this is like jailing the Soul at night , and that indeed is the biggest karma !

Bondage through doership.

Q: Kindly explain how karmas are bound in more detail.

D: Even though you are not really the doer of any act, because you do those acts with the understanding and feeling that " I am doing them ", your bondages remain. Even God is not the doer.

If God was the doer of all these , he would become bound. So neither God, nor you are the doer. But because you beleive that you are the doer, the karmas...the acts bind you for future results and effects. You passed your grades in college. This is becuase of some other shakti...energy with effects..force, and you say " I passed college. " This is Aaropit Bhaav...false location feeling and this binds you in the act...karmabandhan.

The origin of Kashaya...passions of anger, pride, illusion or greed.

Q: I wish to know more about "charge" and "discharge" kashaya.

D: The current kashayas you are experiencing , of becoming angry at someone, are all discharge kashaya. But if you have bhaav...feelings, attitude, opinion within that anger, then the seed of charge kashaya is being sown.

Q: Bhaavkarma...charging karma is part of every discharge karma, is it not ?

D: No. During the process of discharge, charging can be stopped. This is possible for those who have taken Gnan ... Jnana, Knowledge of the Self, from us. These folks never charge.Thereafter, karmas do not bind them.

Q: Is there a test to know whether this is "charge" or "discharge" karma ?

D: Yes. All kinds of tests. One will know. In charging process...he will experience inner turmoil and disruption. Ashanti. There will be loss of Samadhi...tranquility and equanimity. Samadhi remains established where charging is not occuring.

Q: Does anger occur in the state of samadhi ?

D: Anger which occurs is part of discharge, but if there is bhaav within to express anger then samadhi leaves.

Q: Does the same apply to greed ?

D: Yes. This is the same for krodh, maan, maya, lobh...anger, pride, illusion, greed. One is discharge bhaav and the other is charge bhaav. What is your name ?

Q: Panachand Mehta.

D: Have you confirmed that you are Panachand ?

Q: Everyone tells me so.

D: I accept that as your name, but who are you, really ? As long as you falsely accuse yourself to be Panachand, charging of karmas will continue.

Q: Raag Dwesh...attachment and abhorrence, are they kashayabhaav or something else ?

D: They are the bhaav of kashaya. Anger and pride are part of dwesh...abhorrence and illusion and greed are part of raag...attachment. These anger, pride, illusion and greed are not gunadharma...intrinsic property, quality of the Soul nor are they the gunadharma of pudgala...body that takes in and takes out...matter, jada, physical cosmic flux that operates as living body through thoughts, speech and action.

Q: So which third tattva...element is it ?

D: This guna...quality arises through presence of atma...soul and pudgala. In absence these kashayas do not arise.

Q: The word kashaya is formed of two words...kash and aya. What does it mean ?

D: All that bothers, hurts, obstructs, pains the soul are kashayas.

Q: There is no hurt or pain with raag. Why is it that raag is called kashaya ?

D: There is no pain with raag, but raag is the seed of kashaya. It grows into a big tree ! Dwesh is the beginning of kashaya. Raag is the seed. What will be the result of raag? Dwesh. When the fruits come, then dwesh will commence. Yes, now because of raag, they taste pleasant .
