Lab Sections

Each week in lab we will focus on a different theme relating to the lecture component of the course, but the labs do not duplicate information presented in the text or lecture--they expand on it or add to it. A list of topics appears on the reverse side of this sheet. The labs are designed to provide hands- on experience with the subject matter of the course. In lab, you will often be handling objects that are fiagile and expensive, so we ask that you treat them with care and respect. Please do not bring food or drink into the lab.

Most of the labs incorporate an active learning component that stresses collaboration with other students. You should be prepared to engage in both individual and group work. (NOTE: This does not mean that identical written assignments can be handed in by two people. Each individual must hand in his or her own individual work product. Students handing in identical or substantially similar written assignments would be in violation of the CLA policy against plagiarism.) All lab exercises are contained in the Anthropology llOI Lab Manual, Parts I and II.

Additional key readings for some labs are in the Anthropology 1101 Course Packet. These materials are available at Paradigm Course Resource, 14th and University Ave. SE, in the Dinkydome.

Assignments and Requirements: You will be required to turn In a worksheet at every lab, and these worksheets will be _graded (together the worksheets make up 10% of the course grade). There are also five quizzes, four of which will be included in your grade (they add up to 5% of the course grade)--this means the lowest quiz score can be dropped.

Two written assignments will also be required (they are 10% of course grade). All of this work is based directly on lab exercises and readings. Unless otherwise stated, assignments are due at the beginning of your lab section meeting. Written assignments or essays must be typed and double-spaced using a standard 12-point font (i.e., Courier, Times New Roman, Prestige) and oneinch margins. Five points will automatically be deducted from assignments turned in late. Once assignments have been returned to the other students in your section, late assignments will not be accepted. Every effort will be made to return your assignments one week after their due date. Missed quizzes cannot be made up except in the case of extenuating circumstances. In the event of illness, emergency, etc., you should notify your TA or the instructor ON OR BEFORE the day of your absence. You must supply written verification of your circumstances in order to make up the work. Datesof quizzes and due dates of assignments are on the schedule on the reverse of this sheet. your absence.

Miscellaneous: For issues not specifically addressed in this syllabus follow the guidelines in the CLA handbook. Both new and old students may want to review the CLA policy on academic misconduct and plagiarism. Students with any speriial needs or concerns are encouraged to speak with their TA as soon as possible.
