Lab 3 Extra Information

Lab TIPS: 1)Learn the difference between a post-orbital partition and a post- orbital bar. Prosimians have a post-orbital bar. All other primates do not have a post-orbital bar. They have a post-orbital partition. A post-orbital partition means a fully enclosed eye socket. You have a post-orbital partition. Partition means like a "wall" behind the eyeball. Other mammals don't necessarily have this. For example, dogs have neither a post orbital bar nor a post-orbital partition. A pencil can go through the eye socket area and come out the side of the cranium. A post orbital bar means a pencil can go through the eye socket but there is a bar that goes across from the zygomatic arch to the cranium.

Lemur (a prosimian): Note the Post-Orbital BAR (no partition or wall behind the eyeball)

Lemur (lateral view)

2) Learn the difference between primates for the quiz e.g. gibbons have no tails and brachiate and have permanently curved fingers. Baboons have tails and are quadrupeds and have a 2-1-2-3 dental pattern which distinguishes them from a New World Monkey with a 2-1-3-3- dental pattern, etc.

A Gibbon (Hylobate) Note the fully enclosed eye socket with a post-orbital partition ( a"wall") behind the eyeball. Gibbons have permanently curved fingers and no tails (After all they are not monkeys!)

3) Remember that there's a quiz next week for 15 points on this lab. Also it is important to read the primate behavior articles before going to lab next week.
