I was so glad to find your site, because right now I'm doing an essay on Shylock. But I would like to add apoint. I think there is a hidden purpose of Shylock's part which you have not mentioned (or I've not read it!). Shylock's part was not just a victim or a villian, but probably comedy one. As we all know, in Shakespeare's time the prejudice against Jewish was strong, so maybe Shakepeare used this background to add to the joke of his comedy to attract audiences. I mean, Shylock's malice personality see ed to be too over exaggerated to be a real Jew, right?. But this is just an idea.You'r site had really helped me. Thanks.

Your thoughts on Merchant of Venice seem very solid to me. I have seen this play many times, and, as a Jew, always agonise over the role that Shylock must play. It is Shakerspear's genius that, in spite of the anti semitism of his time, he is able to gi e Shylock some human values that help us see his side of the issue, before he is destroyed and made to convert.

I agree with Rico, who wrote in about your inference to Shylock being a target of anti-sematism. It was only one play!!!! If you're so interested about ethnic issues, how about bitching about "Othello" where, from a perspective of a whiny party's such a yourselves opinion, where the The Moor of Venice kills his white bitch because he thought she cheated on him(aka, anti-interracial relationship), or even the stereotype of Wiccans, such as the Weird Sisters in Macbeth, where they use satanic spirits "I c me, Graymalkin", and practice black magic, including parts of human flesh, to divinate the future of Scotland. Let's not forget male chauvenism in The Taming of the Shrew, where a disagreeable Katerina is beaten in public by her husband, given to her out of her father's more lovable daughter's conveiniance(Bianca could not marry until her older sister, "Kate" did first) Personally, I find none of these instances offensive, but I'm trying to make an example of my reading into the literature too much like you people are. Sheakespere did only basically what a news reporter would do back then, but with an added artistic for at--he was reflecting the times in which he lived, using, purely, superb artistic liscence. If you freaks can't understand that, then you shouldn't be reading Shakespere AT ALL! LADY MISS THING

I am teaching summer school English to 9th grade students who really don't want to be in class. I "fell" into this job right before school started ---- the books were already picked for me and I was surprised to learn that I was to teach The Merchant of V nice - (for the most part, these are kids who had low grades or failed 9th grade English - the main work studied was Romeo and Juliet. Since I found this site, my work as a director for the theatre improved 500%! Here in the Philippines, scholarship does not exist. I have based my interpretation of my latest production of The Merchant of Venice on the dissertation "Shylock is Us". Venice and Belmont exist in the early 18th Century, while Shylock, Morocco and Aragon come from the 20th; a banker a la David Rockefell r or Rotchild [if you like], a rock star [like Sting], and a Fashion Designer [Calvin Klein]. Your guestbook reads like a newsgroup! Interesting site. I like Shylock because he stirred so many emotions - Hate him for being such a brute - but you can't say that he was wrong in anything that he did. And his speech... "hath not a jew.....hands, orga s dimensions, senses, affections passions?". I think he was portrayed as more than a Jewish villian, Shakespeare also showed Shylock (In the aforementioned speech) as a human being with valid fears and concern for his people. What's the difference if the play itself is anti-Semitic? We know that Shakespeare couldn't possible have been anti-Semitic because of the way Shylock is portrayed. Surely you don't think that Shylock is a reconstructed Barabas!! That would almost be too uch. Shakespeare's genious in this play is to reach out and pull the audience in with their society..and then pull the wool over their eyes before they know it to show them something new, only to give them what they want at the end. But still, he SHOWED hem. I have to argue that he portrays him as a murderous Jew. I mean, doesn't anyone consider what something like that would do to a person after many years? Shylock is obviously an older man, so we can assume that he has put up with anti-Semitism for m ny years. Perhaps his want for the pound of flesh is a result of mental conflicts etc. I know after that kind of abuse for many years, I'd wonder where mine went, and I'd also wanna give my pain back to those that gave it. Just my thoughts. :) Thanks f r listening :)

Great site. I portrayed Jessica in a production in Manchester in 1994. I found her relationship with Shylock very unhealthy, and the more I looked into it, the more I felt that Jessica is the true victim of the play. I love acting Shakespeare, and would appreciate it if you would turn your attention to his other comedies, and deconstruct them in a similar fashion. How about it?

I was quite impressed with your cite--wonderful job. I recently saw a performance of "Merchant..." in England (in January) which was performed by the RSC. Thier take on Shylock was beautiful, in my opinion, and the performance was the most moving of thi particulat play that i have had the pleasure to see. I strongly suggest you, if you have such a desire, contact the RSC--I'm sure they would send you information about the play and the wonderful actor who portrayed Shylock. He was amazing.

I did a similar paper for my master's thesis, but came to rather different conclusions. I would like to suggest that you take a look at the other plays of the period, beginning with "The Play of the Sacrament." The fact that Shakespeare endows Shylock w th any modicum of humanity is incredibly daring for this time, particularly given the execution of Lopez in the recent past. I will be teaching a course in Shakespeare at Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, Kentucky, in the coming fall semester. I plan to recommend that my students check out your website.
