Being a scribe meant education at a young age. And this meant leaving home for a boarding school. And so, at the age of only five years, Rath was sent away from his family to study in Amarna, the center of education and the arts in all of Egypt. It is because of this, probably, that he never really figured out what family life and companionship was about, and spent his childhood and teen years souly alone, learning the ways of the arts and sciences.
But life would get interesting really soon. After studying the classes that school had to offer, one of Rath's teachers found that he had a knack for learning and using that knowledge the proper way. So, he introduced him to the ancient magic, powers that all Egyptians possessed, but most never used and eventually disappeared. It was somewhat rocky at first, but soon Rath was able to grasp onto the function of the creative side of the brain, and was able to use the magic for creative and educational purposes. Especially the powers of the cobra, being his natural animal sign, they were easy to manipulate.
Finally, after many years of training and learning, Rath was called upon by a wealthy nobleman in Thebes. It wasn't the greatest time of his life, having even less time to study magic than before. After only a few months, it just wasn't worth it, and he returned to Amarna, studying some more, and teaching those that wanted to learn about the Ancient magic. It was very rewarding, besides the fact that most of his students wanted to learn too quickly, not realizing the consequences.
There
came a time, when the new Pharaoh Amenhotep called upon him to be his personal
scribe and part time advisor. Accepting, Rath moved to the capitol of Memphis,
trying to get in working for the pharaoh, practicing magic, teaching magic
and work on new and creative inventions all at the same time.
It was then that he met Chontra, a young woman who more than anything else in the world wanted to learn magical abilities. He was impressed and bewildered that she learned so quickly, finding that over time, he was falling in love with her grace and beauty. The light was shattered though, when Amenhotep informed him that his son would need schooling, and he was the one that was going to teach him.
This was when he was considered one of Rapses guardians. Ja-kal taught him hunting skills, Armon showed him the art of self-defense, Nefer was to show him the art of chariots and recreation, and Rath was to fofill the academic portion of the Prince's life, although he was more of a teacher than a protector.
In the 20th Century, times have
become more modern and advances in technology have
enabled Rath to work on machinery and inventions more fully. Because of
an understanding about how things work and social limitations, he has created
many things to help the mummies in their battle against Scarab, including-
The Hot Ra, Nileator, Skycophagus, jet cycle and an assortment of other
(Some unpleasant) appliances located in the Sphinx.
Although not a fighter or warrior in Egypt, Rath has learned the fighting art Egypt-su, a form of fighting that most egyptians knew. Like the others, he can bulk up, using the powers of the desert cobra and magic skill, relying more on smarts than on strength (seeing as how he's more experienced in that field). He also has a long attack sword called a khepesh, forged with special metal alloys sharp enough to cut through steel, and is used primarily to cut Shabtis down to size and create make-shift doorways.
Like all the guardians, Rath has a special relationship with the reborn prince Rapses. Like Ja-kal, he's a type of father figure, not to spend time with the boy, but to pass on things that he has learned. We have seen though, that even though he's understanding towards Presley, doesn't take any laziness or crap from him and seems to be the most stern of all the guardians (This is seen in the episodes Sleepwalk like an Egyptian and Miscast).
He may be the most "old-fasioned", but Rath is the one that is most able to understand the new world. And if he doesn't, it's a simple matter of saying "It's far too complicated to explain." Trying to keep his haughty pride and smarts against the others up.
