GRADE LEVEL: All Grades; Secular
COMMENTS: Is your child full of questions? You might look here to find the answers. Just reading the questions and answers here are mighty informative. Follow her FAMILY-FRIENDLY links for more learning and fun.
Ask Jeeves
GRADE LEVEL: All Grades; Secular
COMMENTS: "Ask Jeeves is a smarter, easier way to find answers online. You can ask your question in plain English rather than using keywords. Jeeves searches its own KnowledgeBase and other search engines, returning a short list of relevant matches." For instance, I just typed the question, "Can you tell me all about the animal turkey?" and I got links to animal information as well as information about cooking and carving turkeys! Much easier to use than a typical search engine. This particular "Ask Jeeves" may not be safe for kids to use however there is an "Ask Jeeves for Kids" available too. Click here for the version for kids. If you want another child-safe search engine/directory for kids to use for their research, try the next link below..."Yahooligans".
GRADE LEVEL: All Grades; Secular COMMENTS: This is a CHILD-SAFE directory/search engine that you can have your child use in order to do some research on their own. Teach them how to use this simple tool and they will learn all kinds of things for fun or for a research paper for school.
GRADE LEVEL: All Grades; Secular COMMENTS: This site has over 1,000 lesson plans listed by subject and grade level. I found a fantastic 2nd grade Math activity using shaving cream to teach fractions! If you follow the EDUCATIONAL LINKS also listed at this site you will be brought to many more sites having many more lesson plans for you to choose from. Definitely worth your time to look around here!
especially!
GRADE LEVEL: Elementary-Middle School; Secular COMMENTS: Need some educational games in geography, spelling, grammar and math? Come to FunBrain! I really liked the math game where you had to tell how many coins you would need to make change for a given sale. Kids need this kind of practice games are here and if that isn't enough, homeschool parents may design their own quiz in the teacher section of this site for your child to take in any subject area! Then, have your child sign on and take the quiz you made...results are e-mailed to you. A great resource!
GRADE LEVEL: Elementary-Middle School; Secular COMMENTS: Look up things in several different dictionaries at this site. Categories available are as follows: 1) English Language: General Dictionaries 2) Search other online dictionaries of English 3) English Language: Jargon 4) Computer terms and other technical talk from @ to Zee 5) English Language: Writing--English grammar, usage and style guides and references 6) Other Languages--Links to more than 600 dictionaries in 150 different languages.
GRADE LEVEL: Elementary-Middle School; Secular COMMENTS: Find things in many different categories at this site. Very similar to Yahooligans! in format and ease of use. It was created by a "bunch of librarians" so it should be fairly safe for children to use in researching. CAUTION: I did see a section on "Religion" and "AIDS" so you may want to preview...there may be areas you want your child to stay away from...just be aware to be safe.
GRADE LEVEL: All ages; Secular COMMENTS: "The Awesome Library contains 14,000 carefully reviewed resources, including the top 5 percent in education." A resource-packed site if you have the time to browse a little. I chose "Teachers" and then "Lessons". From there I selected "PE" and then "Preschool" and I found several fun and educational activities for preschoolers. There is so much to look at here...a great reference to have!
GRADE LEVEL: Pre-School-Middle School; Secular COMMENTS: This site's links were collected, created and maintained by Mr. DeCamilla of the Longfellow Elementary School in Maine. GRADE LEVEL: All ages; Secular COMMENTS: I got this valuable link from my FREEBIE OF THE DAY mailing. Their description of this site says it all so I will quote it here. You've got to visit this place soon! It is a great site for both kids and parents. Kids Freeware has four main sections: Lots
of Fun, School is Open, Computers and Web, and Parents Only!
"Lots of Fun is a comprehensive collection of free software and online services like games, screensavers, coloring books, and a lot more. This includes coloring pages that can be printed or colored right online, as well as trivia games related to some of kids favorite subjects. This section also has desktop themes and screensavers like The Lion King, Toy Story 2, and a whole lot more!"
"School is Open is a comprehensive collection of educational programs to help kids with math, reading, and writing just to name a few. It also makes learning fun with games to help improve your child's memory and learn the alphabet among other things."
"Computers and Web section is a great resource
for programs to improve your child's surfing experience including calculators, collection organizers, and a lot more. It also includes tutorials for creating graphics, web pages, etc. Although this section is geared towards children, it includes a lot of programs that adults may even find useful."
"Parents Only section is just that. It includes programs and links to online resources to help you teach your children to surf safely and other non-computer related activities like product recalls, and anything else you can imagine."
GRADE LEVEL: All ages; Secular COMMENTS: This is the most wonderful site I have ever seen! Barbara Feldman keeps up with what is out there on the web that is safe, fun and educational for your child. Be sure to sign up for her semi-weekly e-mail newsletter which will keep you informed as to more educational sites on the web. I am impressed that her newsletter contains not only links to great sites but a commentary as well...a great time-saver for Mom. This is one newsletter you can't afford to not sign up for if you are homeschooling OR if you have children who like to visit educational sites. Her newsletter usually is centered around a theme too, especially helpful for those homeschoolers who do unit studies. Hats off to Barbara Feldman and her wonderful site!
