Brown's Mill

.....For several years now, I have listened to the locomotive engineers and dispatchers speak of Brown's Mill. But, I didn't know what or where this site was even though I had asked an in-law who worked for the railroad. Just recently, however, i did find out what Brown's Mill was and where it was located.
.....Brown's mill was one of the industrial establishments that existed during the Greenbrier County Boom Days. Although it is called Brown's Mill by the railroaders today, it was once The Brown Wagon and Carriage Factory and was located about two miles upriver from Ronceverte and was besidc the main line of the C&O Railway. Making wooden parts for wagons and carriages as well as tool handles, the Browns operated the mill from the 1880's to 1927 when the boom days were drawing to a close. It is hard for the younger generations to picture the activity that caused the Greenbrier Area to hum with activity in those days.
