The covered spans that at present carry the Midland Trail (Route Sixty) over the Greenbrier River near White Sulphur Springs (at Caldwell) are said to be the longest wooden spans in West Virginia and among the longest of their kind in the United States. This bridge is a two-lane structure of two spans, each span being supported by three heavy double-timbered circular tresses, one of which is in the center dividing the two lanes. The bridge was originally built in 1822 by the state of Virginia at a cost of $18,000, a large expenditure for a bridge at the time. The bridge was destroyed by fire while the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway was building westward. In 1872, it was rebuilt as it stands today (Comstock Vol. 22, 132).
