Ca' Giustinian - Certain people hold
that the origins of the Giustinian family date back to the ancient Roman
gens or clan of the Anici. According to popular tradition, the Giustinian's
family almost died out in in the twelfth century because all the male offspring
had died in a battle against the Byzantine emperor Manuel Eroticus Comnenus.
The sole survivor was a youthful Justinian, but he had taken religious
vows and was a monk at San Niccolò del Lido.
