CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

Columbus Day is on the second Monday of October.  Columbus Day is also known as Pioneer's Day or Discoverer's day.  There had always been a misleading purpose of Columbus Day.  The falsehood is that Columbus Day should be celebrated for Columbus' discovery of the New World which in fact he was not the first one there.  As far as historians are concerned, the Native Americans had been America's first inhabitants.  Therefore, Columbus did not discovered America, perhaps, he passed by.  Columbus was on an expedition for Spain's Queen Isabella to search for Spice Island in the West Indies.  Instead of landing in Asia, he landed in North America[not the US].   After knowing that they had arrived to a totally foreign land with other kind of people they had never seen--the Native Americas, they exploited them.  The population of the natives declined dramatically due to inhuman slavery and deadly disease.  So what is the real purpose of Columbus Day and why do we still call that day Columbus Day?
