GANESHA - Ganesha, the elephant-shaped son of Shiva and Parvati's birth was a strange one, yet one that is very well-known throughout India. Parvati, the goddess of power needed an attendant to guard her palace while she bathed. She decided that no one pleased her, so she would make her own son with the saffron paste of her very own body. After sculpting a strong youth figure, she evoked life into him through her spiritual powers. The boy came to be known as Ganesha. One day, his father, Shiva, demanded to enter his wife's palace, but Ganesha refused him entrance because Parvati was bathing. This made Shiva very mad that this young boy refused him entrance to what was rightfully his. Shiva gathered his attendants, the Ganas, and attacked the boy,but he killed all the Ganas. Next Shiva's other son Kartikeya, and the King of Gods, Indra came to attack the boy, but they left disappointed. After the entire army of Indra, Kartikeya and Shiva was exhausted with great casualties, Shiva decided to attack the boy himself. Vishnu, the preservor created a Maya, or illusion, and during this which confused the boy, Shiva cut his head off with his trident. Parvati became furious, and said that she would kill everyone who opposed the boy, unless he was brought back to life. So, Brahma and Vishnu, went to the jungle and found an elephant willing to sacrifice itself for the boy's sake. They cut off it's head, and put it on Ganesha's body. After this, Brahma, the creator, evoked life into the youth once again. The child was furious that he had the status of an elephant, but at that very moment, a heavenly voice spoke, and said that Ganesha shall be worshiped as the destroyer of obstacles, and viewed as a very powerful deity in Hinduism. Now days, still, before starting a big project, many Hindus in India worship Lord Ganesha, so that all obstacles in their way can be cleared.
INDRA - King of the Gods (Devas) is the controller of the three worlds, the heavens, the earth and the nether world. It is up to him to make sure that all the inhabitants of the three worlds are living peaceful lives. In his capital, the court of devas is held where all the gods, including Surya, Varun, Agni, and Dharma attend and they feast to everlasting peace and prosperity. Indra's preceptor is Brihaspati, and his mother, Mata Aditi, who is said to be known as the mother of all the devas.
