APPROVAL OF PRESIDENT

AND

ELECTION OF PRESIDENT EMERITUS

On April 21, during the annual meeting of the Baptist Missionary Association of America, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dr. Charley Holmes was approved as the president of the BMA Seminary, and Dr. Philip R. Bryan was elected as president emeritus. The change in duties will begin on Monday, May 17, at the conclusion of the Seminary's annual commencement exercises. BMA Seminary Board of Trustees Chairman Ronnie Chesser will join President Emeritus Bryan in installing Dr. Holmes as the new president. During the next two months the complete transition will take place.

On Monday, February 22, 1999, the trustees of the Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary in Jacksonville, TX, selected Dr. Charley Holmes to succeed Dr. Philip R. Bryan as president of the Seminary at the close of the school year. In September 1998, the trustees had accepted Dr. Bryan's resignation and had approved his desire to step aside as president and resume duties again as a full-time professor in the Theological/Historical Studies field. Dr. Bryan became president in 1983. Previously he was the academic dean.

For the past several years Dr. Holmes, with his extensive travels and contacts with the pastors and other leaders of churches throughout the Baptist Missionary Association, has been developing the experience, skills, and expertise necessary to function in his new role as president. He is also well-respected in the community. A graduate of BMA Seminary, Holmes also completed the Doctor of Ministry degree at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, MS, last December. A fervent preacher and evangelist, Holmes has the qualifications that should ensure a very fruitful ministry in his new capacity. Students and faculty alike rejoice in this decision.

Dr. Charley Holmes and his wife, Dianne, have been married for 27 years. They have two daughters: Mrs. Rachel Chandler, a first grade teacher at Joe Wright School in Jacksonville, and Rebecca, a sophomore at Jacksonville High School. Holmes has been serving for the past six years on the BMA Seminary faculty as a professor in Biblical Studies and in the administration as development officer. He has also been quite active as an evangelist and revival preacher. Previously, he served as pastor of Pine Brook Baptist Church, in Tyler, Texas, and most recently as interim pastor of First Baptist Church, Carthage, Texas. Before entering the Seminary, President Holmes was in private business.

SPECIAL NOTE OF THANKS!

This will be my last regular news release as president of the BMA Seminary. In fact, I am writing this as president emeritus! Starting with the June release, Dr. Charley Holmes will be providing the news each month. The past 16 years have certainly been eventful and exciting to me. Especially exciting has been the opportunity to have a leading role in the planning and developing of this ministry. I thank the Lord that I have been able to serve Him at BMA Seminary and will continue serving--but now in the classroom--the place where I receive the most enjoyment! I want to extend special thanks and appreciation to all of the people and churches who have supported this work during my tenure as president. I know that you will continue during the presidency of Dr. Holmes. And many thanks for the many thoughtful deeds and courtesies that have been extended to me during the past year, and at the association in Colorado Springs last month. I am talking about the letters, email, letters, telephone calls, personal conversations, kind words, handshakes, hugs, and most generous love offering and other gifts!

VERY SPIRITUAL MEETING IN COLORADO SPRINGS

This year's annual meeting of the BMA of America in Colorado Springs has been one of the best that most have had the privilege of attending. Attendance was very good, the worship was great, and the reports and associational business were very challenging! It seems that every time we meet in Colorado Springs, we have a wonderful meeting.

The sanctuary choir of College Hill Baptist Church, Tyler, TX, will bring special music. Their pastor, Rev. Willie M. Houze, is one of the degree candidates. The service will recognize the conclusion of Dr. Bryan's 16 year tenure as president. His message will serve as a challenge to the graduates and to Dr. Charley Holmes who will assume the duties of president on August 1. Seminary Trustee Chairman Ronnie Chesser will join the president and dean in conferring the degrees.

EVANGELISM UPDATE

As of April 8, Seminary students and professors in the evangelism course this spring had made 123 contacts, given 74 complete Gospel presentations, and witnessed 22 professions of faith! VLADIMIR BARANIUK RECOVERING

FROM HEART SURGERY

On Thursday, March 25, eight year old Vladimir Baraniuk, son of Fiodor and Galina Baraniuk, underwent 4 hours of heart surgery in Dallas. A number of the Baraniuk's friends, both from within and without the BMA, were present during the surgery. Many other Christians throughout the world joined them in praying earnestly. As of this date, Vladimir is recovering quite rapidly and hopes to return to school on April 12. It is still unknown just what the Seminary's financial obligation will be in this case. Health insurance is provided, but this usually does not cover everything, and there are other expenses involved in such circumstances. People wanting to help financially are asked to send their offerings to the Seminary, with the notation that they are for the EES fund. Currently the money available in that fund is very meager.

WADE ALLEN AWARDED ASHER SCHOLARSHIP

In August 1997, the Glenfawn Baptist Church of Cushing, Texas, established the "Louis F. Asher Scholarship Fund" as a memorial to their former pastor of twenty years, who died in November, 1996. L. F. Asher had also been a professor at the Seminary for twenty-five years. The purpose of the scholarship fund is to promote and reward good scholarship by providing at least one scholarship each spring semester to an outstanding student who has completed one semester of studies. The second recipient of this scholarship is Wade Allen, a native of Springdale, AR. Wade is serving as pastor of Sheridan Terrace Baptist Church in Palestine, TX. He and his wife, Joanna, are the proud parents of a daughter, Carly. Mr. and Mrs. John Allen are Wade's parents. Rev. and Mrs. George Reddin, Conway, AR, are Joanna's parents. Announcement of the award was made and the scholarship was presented during a special chapel service on Tuesday, January 26. Funds from this scholarship fund are used to contribute toward tuition, fees, and textbook needs of the recipient. We are extremely proud of this fine student and very grateful that this good church has chosen to remember their late pastor in such a worthwhile manner. Interested friends and churches are welcome to contribute to this fund. Checks for such offerings should be made out to Glenfawn Baptist Church. The Seminary staff will see that they reach the proper place.

SCHOLARSHIP SUNDAY, MAY 16

In conjunction with this year's annual May-June Seminary Emphasis Months, May 16 has been designated as Scholarship Sunday. Churches, auxiliaries, and friends are encouraged to give a special offering for the Seminary Work Scholarship Fund during this time if they have not had an earlier opportunity at a local rally. This year they are encouraged to give these special offerings in honor of Dr. Bryan's 16 years as president.

HOLMES SELECTED AS NEW SEMINARY PRESIDENT

On Monday, February 22, 1999, the trustees of the Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary in Jacksonville, TX, selected Dr. Charley Holmes to succeed Dr. Philip R. Bryan as president of the Seminary at the close of the school year on July 31, 1999. At the September trustee meeting the trustees had accepted Dr. Bryan's resignation and had approved his desire to step aside as president and resume duties again as a full-time professor in the Theological/Historical Studies field. The seven-member search committee which had been elected in September made their report to the trustees. Thereupon, Dr. Holmes was chosen unanimously by the full board, with 13 of the 15-member board present. This responsibility is mandated to the trustees in the BMAA Statement of Principles of Cooperation, Article XII - Christian Education Committee, Section 3: "The duty of the trustees is . . . to make selection of the president, faculty and other members of the school staff in line with the instructions and purposes of the association . . . ." As is customary, the trustees will ask the messengers present at this year's annual BMA of America meeting in Colorado Springs, CO, to give their approval. Bryan is completing his sixteenth year as president and Holmes has been serving as development officer.

For the past several years Dr. Holmes with his extensive travels and contacts with the pastors and other leaders of BMA churches throughout the association has been developing the experience, skills, and expertise necessary to function in his new role as president. He also completed the Doctor of Ministry degree at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, MS, last fall with the degree conferred in December. A fervent preacher and avid soul-winner Holmes has the qualifications that should ensure a very fruitful ministry in his new capacity. Students and faculty alike rejoice in this decision.

DEATHS AND ILLNESSES

In recent weeks, death has touched the lives of several of our close friends. The following BMA Seminary people have suffered loss of family members: Dr. Ralph A. Brand, Seminary trustee; Dr. Philip Attebery, BMA Seminary faculty member; and Billy Mosley, BMA Seminary Business Manager. Even on the last weekend of February, memorial services were conducted for Mrs. Muriel Wilson. Mrs. Wilson had worked in our library for 15 years, until failing health forced her early retirement in 1994. May God be very near to all of you, dear ones! Your many friends join you in your great loss!

Another of the Seminary trustees, Bro. A. W. Kirkland of Perkinston, MS, underwent heart surgery on January 29. To date, Bro. A. W. seems to be on the road to recovery. Special prayers are requested for Mrs. Dessie Hobbs, wife of Seminary trustee Jack Hobbs of Muskogee, OK.

VLADIMIR BARANIUK SCHEDULED FOR HEART SURGERY

On Thursday, March 25, eight year old Vladimir Baraniuk, son of Fiodor and Galina Baraniuk, is scheduled for heart surgery in Dallas. All of the BMA Seminary family of friends are urged to pray earnestly for the success of this surgery. It is still unknown just what the Seminary's financial obligation will be in this case. Health insurance is provided, but this usually does not cover everything, and there are other expenses involved in such circumstances. People wanting to help financially are asked to send their offerings to the Seminary, with the notation that they are for Vladimir's surgery. We will see that they go to the proper place.

SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEK

This year's annual "Brand Lectures" during Spiritual Emphasis Week were delivered on March 2 and 4 by Ted Johnson, President of the Texas Baptist Home for Children in Waxahachie, TX. The theme for the series was entitled: "Draw Me Nearer, Blessed Lord." The individual messages were as follows: "Drawing Closer to God," "To Know God More Clearly," "To Know God More Dearly," and "To Follow God More Nearly." Faculty and students always look forward to this time of spiritual renewal during Spiritual Emphasis Week.

STAFF BREAKFAST

In early March information will be mailed concerning the S.T.A.F.F. (Students, Trustees, Alumni, Faculty, and Friends) business and fellowship which we observe annually. These materials will be mailed to those who have attended in the past. The breakfast is scheduled for Wednesday morning, April 21. At this year's meeting, special recognition and honor will be given to President Philip Bryan and his wife, Janice. Plan now to attend this time of good fellowship.

1999 BIBLE CONFERENCE

Jacksonville College and BMA Seminary officials have finalized the program for the 1999 Jacksonville Bible Conference. The 55th session of this popular conference will be held February 22nd and 23rd. This year's conference is quite historic because it takes place during Jacksonville College's Centennial Year! The theme is entitled "Foundations of Faith." As usual, the conference will feature challenging and informative preaching, inspirational music, and warm fellowship. The Texas State WMA also will meet in their annual Executive Meeting. The theme of their program is "Kingdom Living." Be sure to highlight these dates on your calendar! A complete program will be mailed to BMA papers in the next few days.

SPRING SEMESTER BEGINS

By the time this release is printed, the 1999 spring semester will have begun. The last day to enroll for a class is January 29. Enrollment statistics will be released next month.

PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE

The BMA Seminary trustees presidential search committee is scheduled to meet shortly after the January 18 deadline set for applications. The committee is working diligently in their search for their forthcoming recommendation of a candidate for president of the Seminary. Hopefully, they will have a recommendation ready to present to the full board in their February meeting. This committee and the rest of the trustees solicit the prayers of all friends of BMA Seminary that the Lord will clearly show His will concerning the new president.

DEAN'S LIST, FALL 1998

UPDATE ON CHRISTMAS OFFERINGS

The BMA Seminary business office has reported that total offerings for the annual Christmas Campaign had reached $9,950.16 as of January 12. The money this year has gone into the International Student Scholarship Fund (ISS) to provide funds for Rama (from Burma) and Yaw (Ghana). On behalf of these students, we sincerely thank everyone who has had a part in providing for their financial needs. A number of other individuals and churches have given gifts in clothing, housing necessities, etc.

December 3, 1998

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT IS FOCUS OF ANNUAL CHRISTMAS OFFERING

This year's annual BMA Seminary Christmas offering focuses on the financial needs of a new international student--Lal Ram Thanga. "Rama," as he prefers to be called, is the nephew of one of our BMA missionary families in Burma. Brother Rama arrived just before school started in August. Annual Christmas offering materials were sent to most of our supporting churches and other friends the last week in November. These materials contain a brief biographical sketch about Rama, as well as a number of pictures from his country and BMA mission work there.

CHANGE IN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS

Because of the changes in the makeup of our international student population, the Seminary is changing some of the titles of the funds. Bro. Fiodor Baraniuk is the last of the Eastern European students currently enrolled on campus. Bro. Fiodor will be completing his studies this spring. Our financial commitment to him will end soon after he graduates next May. God has certainly used His people to provide for the funds of these Eastern European students and their families. For several years, we have called that scholarship fund the "Eastern European Scholarship Fund" (sometimes referred to as "50/50" or "EES"). Current sponsors of that fund are urged to continue until summer. Although the amount of support currently needed is not so great as in the past, several extraordinary expenses must be funded. Bro. Fiodor's oldest son, Vladimir, is scheduled for heart surgery some time this spring. Although we provide health insurance for this family, we will still have to provide the deductible amount and a certain percentage of the total. Also we must be getting ready to buy airplane tickets for these four people as they return to their homeland. These special expenses are besides the regular living expenses, which we provide.

A new scholarship fund designation is being put into place: "International Student Scholarship Fund" ("ISS").

That fund will replace the EES fund after Fiodor graduates. By means of this fund, we can provide scholarships to current international students from Burma and Ghana, as well as future students from other countries, including Eastern Europe if more such students come. Last month, Yaw, the son of our BMA missions coordinator in Ghana, arrived in the United States. His coming has been primarily through the efforts of Bro. Ray Loven, the brother whose love for the African people eventually led to the beginning of our BMA work there and the formation of the BMA of Africa. Bro. Yaw will begin his studies in January. BMA Seminary has agreed to provide for all of the financial needs of this brother, as well as those of Bro. Rama. We need help from many of our people in this endeavor. Please send offerings to BMA Seminary with the notation that the gifts are designated for the "International Student Scholarship Fund." All Christmas offerings will be placed in this fund.

TEXARKANA EXTENSION AND ON-CAMPUS SPRING CLASSES

Another extension course is tentatively scheduled to be offered next spring in Texarkana. Interested students should contact the dean's office immediately to make their wishes known concerning this course. Other new students should be completing their application forms now. Copies of the spring 1999 class schedule are now available. Official enrollment for the spring semester will be conducted on January 18, but all students are advised to pre-enroll before then.

PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE

Dr. Gene Medley, chairman of the BMA Seminary trustees presidential search committee, has announced that the committee met in early December. The committee is working diligently in their search for their forthcoming recommendation of a candidate for president of the Seminary. They are currently investigating several prospective candidates. The committee, however, still solicits applications, inquiries, and suggestions. Such materials may be sent to Dr. Gene Medley, Chairman, BMA Presidential Search Committee, in care of the Seminary, with a deadline of January 18.

ANOTHER BLESSED EVENT!

M.Div. Student Justin Hardin and his wife, Keri, are the proud parents of a new son, Noah Timothy, who was born on November 13! Noah just happens to be the second grandson of Professor and Mrs. Jim Shine.

EVANGELISM UPDATE

During the semester, Seminary students in the evangelism course this fall made 235 contacts, gave 79 complete Gospel presentations, and witnessed 19 professions of faith! Praise the Lord!

STUDENT FAMILIES RECEIVE SPECIAL BLESSINGS!

Two families of the BMA Seminary student body recently received special blessings from the Lord. Bachelor of Arts in Religion student Danny Linville and his wife, Briggie, are the proud parents of Adoniram, who was born on September 20. A few days later, Dr. Josh Tao (M.Div. student from China) and his wife, Joy, received a new addition to their family, Wendy, who was born on the 24th. We rejoice with these good people as they share in the joy of the Lord's blessings in the gift of life!

NEW INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FROM THE MISSION FIELDS!

Included among the new students this semester is Rama, the nephew of one of our BMA missionary families in Burma. Brother Rama arrived just before school started in August. He has been adapting well to American (and Texas!) ways. BMA Seminary's annual Christmas offering will focus on this student and include a number of pictures from his country. In mid-November, Yaw, the son of our BMA missions coordinator in Ghana, is scheduled to arrive in the United States. His coming has been primarily through the efforts of Bro. Ray Loven, the brother whose love for the African people eventually led to the beginning of our BMA work there and the formation of the BMA of Africa. Bro. Yaw will begin his studies after the first of the year. BMA Seminary has agreed to provide for all of the financial needs of both of these brethren. We need help from many of our people in this endeavor. Please send offerings to BMA Seminary with the notation that the gifts are designated for their needs.

JANUARY AND SPRING CLASSES

Present plans call for three classes to be offered during the January Inter-Semester, January 4-15, 1999. Two classes are open to all levels of students (PhR 412 and Miss 316). One class (OT 621) is for master's level students. Dr. Greg Parsons will conduct the Old Testament course with a focus on Daniel and Apocalyptic Literature. The Philosophy of Religion course will be a study of Current Movements in Religion. This course will be taught by Dr. Philip Attebery. The Missionary Internship course will be directed by Dr. Charley Holmes. Bro. Holmes will be taking students to visit BMA mission fields in Mexico. The dates for the missions course are: January 6 thorough 15. It is highly likely that another extension course will be offered next spring in Texarkana. Interested students should contact the dean's office immediately to make their wishes known concerning these courses, as well as to obtain a copy of the spring 1999 class schedule. All students must be pre-enrolled no later than December 20, if they are to take either of the January courses. Official enrollment for the spring semester will be conducted on January 18, but all students are advised to pre-enroll any time after November 15.

FALL BANQUET

On Friday evening, November 6, BMA Seminary students, faculty, staff, and their families gathered for the Seminary's annual Fall Banquet, with the theme "Praying Hands Around the World." Featured were dishes, testimonies, prayer, and music from BMA Seminary students from around the world. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all.

PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE

Dr. Gene Medley, chairman of the BMA Seminary trustees presidential search committee, has announced that the committee will meet during the annual missions symposium in Little Rock. A news release and announcement with instructions concerning applications, etc., is forthcoming. In the mean time, inquiries and suggestions may be sent to the BMA Presidential Search Committee, in care of the Seminary.

SYMPATHY AND CONDOLENCES

The BMA Seminary "family" of graduates lost two brothers during the past month. George D. Kilpatrick (Texas, M.R.E. 1991) passed away on October 19, and Roy Inman, Sr. (Indiana, A.Div. 1985) died on October 20. Our sincere sympathy and condolences are extended to the families of these dear people.

DR. CHARLEY HOLMES!

It is now official: Professor Charley Holmes is now Doctor Charley Holmes. We congratulate Dr. Charley Holmes upon the accomplishment of completing the requirements for the Doctor of Ministry degree, at Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, MS.

EVANGELISM UPDATE

As of October 27, Seminary students in the evangelism course this fall had made 178 contacts, given 53 complete Gospel presentations, and witnessed 11 professions of faith! Praise the Lord!

September 14, 1998

PRESIDENT EMERITUS PASSES AWAY

On August 20, Dr. John W. Duggar, BMA Seminary's President Emeritus, died in a Little Rock, AR, hospital, after suffering a massive stroke about 6 a.m. that morning. Complete details about his funeral and major facts about his life have appeared already in most of the BMA papers.

Brother Duggar had certainly been a friend of this seminary president, the BMA Seminary, and BMA Baptists! As a graduate of BMA Seminary (B.D. and Th.D.), Duggar served the Lord with honor as missionary, pastor, scholar, author, professor, missions director, and seminary president. After a distinguished career as seminary president (1973-83), Dr. Duggar was elected by the BMA Seminary Board of Trustees in 1983 as President Emeritus. During that time, he promoted the work of the Seminary and gave encouragement and wise counsel to this president many time.

A number of memorials to Dr. Duggar have been sent to the Seminary. We know that the members of Dr. Duggar's family, as well as those of the BMA Seminary "family," appreciate such loving gestures. Memorials may be designated in the following manner: (a) library books with appropriate plaques, (b) needed renovations on the John W. Duggar Library Annex, or (c) the John W. and Maxine Duggar Endowment Fund (with interest used for the general fund of the Seminary). Naturally, other appropriate designations will be accepted and appreciated.

During the past 4 months, at least 5 BMA Seminary graduates have passed away: Dr. Alan Henson, Dr. S. T. Sullivan, Jack R. Courtney, Rolph B. Dean, and Dr. John W. Duggar. We certainly do miss these dear men! Brothers, we look forward to seeing you in glory!

SEMINARY PRESIDENT TO RETURN

TO FULL-TIME TEACHING

At the BMA Seminary Board of Trustees meeting on Friday, September 11, Dr. Philip R. Bryan, announced to the board his desire to step aside as president and resume duties again as a full-time professor in the Theological/Historical Studies field at the close of the current school year, July 31, 1999. That position had been vacant since the untimely death of Dr. Alan Henson last April. This semester Bryan had been teaching some of the needed theology courses. The trustees regretfully accepted Bryan's resignation and later elected a seven-member presidential search committee, composed of five trustees and two members who are not members of the board. Questions concerning this action or suggestions of potential nominees may be addressed either to Board Chairman Ronnie Chesser or Search Committee Chairman Dr. Gene Medley. Until the committee has had time to become organized and establish a definite plan of procedure, such inquiries may be addressed to either of these men at BMA Seminary's address.

Bryan explained that for some time he had been feeling that it was about time for someone with a new "vision" for the work of the Seminary to assume the position as president. Several times in the past two years, he had discussed such a possibility with the Chairman and other members of the Board. "Now seems to be the proper time," he stated and added, "Although I am quite satisfied and gratified with the Lord's blessings on my work as president, my 'first love' really is in the area of teaching." By making this decision at the fall meeting, the Board of Trustees should have ample time to make a proper decision. This same time-frame and procedure was followed when Dr. Duggar retired at the close of the 1982-83 school year. Furthermore, "Since I believe the Lord is in this action, I know that He will have someone ready to become the new president next summer," Dr, Bryan concluded.

FALL ENROLLMENT FIGURES

Dean Wilbur K. Benningfield has announced that the fall 1998 on-campus enrollment closed with a total of 52 students. There are also 7 students enrolled in an extension class in Texarkana and 7 at another one in Henderson. Nine students are enrolled in correspondence courses. The on-campus student body includes 8 students from 5 foreign countries: 3 -- Poland, 2 -- China, 1 -- Burma, 1 -- Sri Lanka, and 1 -- Russia. Five ladies are in the student body. Thirty-three of the students are members of BMA churches, and 33 are from Texas.

Enrollment by degree programs is as follows: Associate of Divinity -- 8, Bachelor of Arts in Religion -- 12, Master of Arts in Religion -- 14, Master of Divinity -- 15, Auditor -- 1, and Special (i.e., Unclassified) -- 2.

August 10, 1998

RECOGNITION FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE

On August 13, the BMA Seminary faculty and staff and their spouses met for the Seminary's annual appreciation dinner. This meeting is always an enjoyable time, and this year brought into sharp focus several important milestones. (1) Mrs. Carol Shine, bookstore manager and bookkeeper was recognized for ten years of service. Carol is the wife of BMA Seminary professor Jim Shine, who is also pastor of Enterprise Baptist Church of Jacksonville. Besides being an active pastor's wife, Mrs. Shine works extensively in the Seminary Women's Auxiliary and the Cherokee District WMA. (2) Billy Mosley, business manager received a 15 year pin for his service. Bro. Billy serves also as pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Ben Wheeler, TX. (3) Mrs. Anita Small received special recognition for 30 years service as administrative assistant to the president. She has served with three different presidents! Anita's husband, Harold, is pastor of First Baptist Church of Mount Selman, TX. Anita also is very active in the work of the Cherokee District WMA. (4) The president, Philip Bryan, received recognition for 30 years of service. Fifteen of those years were as president, and 12½ were as dean. Throughout the 30 years, he has also served as a professor in the Biblical and Theological-Historical Studies fields.

Each one of the Seminary's current team of administrators has the distinction of having the longest tenure of anyone in the respective positions. James Blaylock, library director, has been on the library staff for 32 years! Anita Small has served longest as administrative assistant to the president. President Philip Bryan has served longer as president than any of his predecessors (15 years). Dean Wilbur Benningfield and Business Manager Billy Mosley have each served in their respective positions for 15 years, longer than any one previously in those positions. Most of the Seminary's full-time faculty members and half of the full-time staff personnel have been at work with us for at least 6 years! Such longevity indicates commitment both on the part of these fine people and the Seminary as a whole as they serve in the places where the Lord has placed them.

HOLMES SOON TO COMPLETE D.MIN. DEGREE

BMA development officer and professor Charley Holmes will soon deserve the title "Dr. Charley Holmes"--if everything works according to schedule. He is in the finishing stages of completing a doctoral research project. Holmes' project is entitled: "Tithing: A Moral Imperative or Old Testament Legalism." Dr. John Gregson, who helped Bro. Charley proof read the paper, said: "As I read the manuscript I was made aware that the principles it promotes would be profitable for every church in the Baptist Missionary Association of America. It is written in a scholarly manner; it is biblically and philosophically sound, yet written with compassion toward those with conflicting views. . . . I highly recommend Charley Holmes as a speaker well qualified to discuss the subject of Stewardship Giving." We are very proud of the efforts put forth by Bro. Holmes and have clearly seen much growth in his knowledge of the Word of God, scholarship, and practical ministry since he first came as a student 9 years ago. To Bro. and Mrs. Holmes we say, "May God bless you! Thank you for your dedicated service!"

FINANCIAL NEWS AND NEWS!

July 31 marked the end of BMA Seminary's 41st year of service! We thank the lord for each of the churches, auxiliaries, and people whom God has used to support and undergird the financial needs of this school! In late August or early September a detailed list of the offerings received from each church will be sent to the pastors for their confirmation as the auditors prepares the annual audit.

As we begin the new year, several financial hurdles face us. We have several rather large expenses which must be paid this month, including the unexpected and most significant amount of $3,300 for the replacement of the Gregson Center air conditioning unit. A new student from Burma (Rama Thanga, the nephew of Myint Aung and Malsawmi our BMA missionaries in Burma) will be arriving soon. We have promised to provide for all of his expenses other than what his meager salary will provide. We still have one Russian family (Fiodor Baraniuk) looking to us for their support and a Polish couple (Zbigniew and Edyta Wierzchowski) whose tuition we are providing as well as a part-time job. All of these students will be paid out of the "EES" scholarship fund. In a few months we are expecting the son of our BMA coordinator in Ghana to begin his studies in January. It will be quite expensive to provide for the needs of all of these people, but our God is great! So, please continue supporting the EES scholarship fund, and add to your support if possible!

FALL SEMESTER PRE-REGISTRATION

All students and prospective students are urged to contact the Dean's Office now to initiate pre-registration proceedings for the fall 1998 semester. Official registration is set for Monday, August 17, with some classes beginning that day. The dean's office is open for advising and pre-registration Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Approximately 30 different classes will be offered on campus. A number of correspondence courses are available also. The BMA Seminary curriculum offers course work on three levels, leading to 4 degrees: Associate of Divinity, Bachelor of Arts in Religion, Master of Arts in Religion, and Master of Divinity. Tuition and other fees at BMA Seminary are usually much lower even than those charged in state-subsidized institutions. Several other types of financial aid are also available. Classes are scheduled most conveniently for commuters and students with jobs. Most of the classes meet once a week for 3 hours. In recent years, all of the apartments were completely renovated. Even students with families find these apartments very comfortable and economical.

EXTENSION COURSE SCHEDULED FOR TEXARKANA AREA

A master's level Pastoral Ministry class (PM 511) will be offered this fall in the new facilities of the Baptist Publishing House in Texarkana. Baptist Publishing House Executive Director James L. Silvey will be the professor. The class will meet on Tuesday nights (7:00-10:00) beginning August 18. Regular tuition fees will be charged ($225 for the course). Students may also "audit" for non-credit. All interested students should contact the Dean's Office or James Silvey as soon as possible.

MORE HURTING FAMILIES

Several families close to the Seminary are hurting because of illness and loss of a loved one. Brothers Roy Wilson, Ralph Brand, and Gordon Renshaw have been experiencing serious illness. We pray earnestly that the Lord will comfort and strengthen them and that He will restore them to their health! In May the members and families at Calvary Baptist Church in La Verne, CA, suffered tremendous loss. Within a three-week period, long-time deacon David Wright and dearly-beloved pastor Samuel Taylor Sullivan died suddenly when they experienced heart attacks. Humanly speaking, these men are utterly irreplaceable! We are trusting in the Lord to be with that dear church. As this news release was being prepared, news came also that Bro. Jack Courtney, a BMA Seminary Graduate and Executive Director of Interstate Missions for the BMA of America, died. Bro. Jack and I were classmate at Jacksonville College and the Seminary, and he performed the wedding ceremony for me and my wife, Janice. Our prayers go out to the Lord in behalf of these hurting people!

SUMMER CLASS OFFERINGS

Dean Wilbur K. Benningfield has announced that 2 courses will be offered in July. During the latter half of July (6-17), BMA Missionary Ricky Williams will be teaching Missions 311, History & Philosophy of Missions, and Dr. Philip Attebery will teach Christian Ethics (CE 611). The ethics course is limited (for credit) to master's level students, but anyone may audit the course. Students from all degree levels may take the missions course for credit or non-credit. Contact the Dean's Office immediately to obtain further information. Arrangements may be made for housing, as well as some financial aid.

FALL SEMESTER SCHEDULE

Official registration for the fall 1998 semester is set for Monday, August 17, with some classes beginning that day. All students are urged to pre-register any time during the summer. The dean's office is open for advising and pre-registration Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Approximately 30 different classes will be offered on campus. An extension course will meet in Texarkana. A number of correspondence courses are available also. The BMA Seminary curriculum offers course work on three levels, leading to 4 degrees: Associate of Divinity, Bachelor of Arts in Religion, Master of Arts in Religion, and Master of Divinity. The courses are grouped together into four fields of study: Biblical Studies Field, Theological-Historical Studies Field, Church Ministries Field, and Christian Education Field.

Because of the generosity of supporting churches and individuals, tuition and other fees are kept at a minimum, usually much lower than what is charged in state-subsidized institutions. Several other types of financial aid are also available, including institutional scholarships and Pell grants. No worthy student should be denied a theological education because of financial need. Interested students should contact us now for full details. Classes are scheduled most conveniently for commuters and students with jobs. Most of the classes meet once a week for 3 hours. About 3 years ago, all of the apartments were completely renovated. There are still some apartments available for the fall semester, including two-bedroom ones. Married students with families find these apartments very comfortable and relatively inexpensive. There is a place for YOU at BMA Seminary! Come to SEE for YOURSELF what we have to offer!

SEMINARY FAMILY IN MOURNING

On Friday, April 10, the BMA Seminary "family" lost one of our dearest friends and brothers. Dr. Alan Henson was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in Arkansas. An overflow crowd of friends, students, colleagues, graduates, church members, and other acquaintances attended memorial services in Dallas on the following Tuesday. Two weeks later, April 28, students conducted a special memorial service in the Dorman Memorial Chapel. The loss of Bro. Alan has left a severe vacuum in the lives of his family, the members of First Highland Baptist Church in Carrollton, where he had served as pastor for 20 years, and the BMA Seminary family. Besides being a graduate of the Seminary, Dr. Henson had served faithfully as professor of theology and preaching for 15 years. Earnest prayer is asked for the Seminary students and faculty as we try to complete this semester's studies and plan for the future. We are thankful to report that Mrs. Carolyn Henson was able to avoid surgery related to her injuries sustained in the accident.

A few days earlier (March, 29), Grady Higgs, Pastor of First Baptist in Jacksonville, and the Seminary President conducted funeral services for Mrs. Ellen Dorman Flurry, the widow of Dr. W. J. Dorman, first Dean of the Seminary. This dear sister had lived a very fruitful and active life and, although advanced in years, her mind was still very sharp and agile. We are thankful for the fond memories that we have of both of these dear friends!

SUMMER CLASS OFFERINGS

Dean Wilbur K. Benningfield has announced that 3 courses will be offered this summer. In early June (1-12), Dr. Elton McCann will be teaching Evangelism 512, Evangelism and Church Growth. During the latter half of July (6-17) two different courses will be taught. BMA Missionary Ricky Williams will be teaching Missions 311, History & Philosophy of Missions, and Dr. Philip Attebery will teach Christian Ethics (CE 611). Two of these courses are limited (for credit) to master's level students. All students may take the missions course. Any of the courses may be taken for non-credit. Contact the Dean's Office immediately to obtain further information. Arrangements may be made for housing, as well as some financial aid.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP FUND ESTABLISHED

Mrs. Gladys Horton, of Tenaha, Texas, has established a generous scholarship fund in honor and memory of her late parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Bagwell, who were members of the Ramah Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Horton has been a member of Ramah Baptist Church for 74 years and is still quite active, teaching a ladies Sunday School class and also a Bible study class in the W.M.A. Interest from this endowment fund will be enough to fund more than one full scholarship each year.

"FISHING FOR MEN"

"Fishing for Men" is the theme for this year's annual May-June Seminary Emphasis Months. Shortly after the first of May, Seminary Emphasis materials were mailed to our pastors, auxiliaries, and other members of the BMA Seminary Family. These materials focus on the exciting results taking place in the Seminary's new evangelism emphasis. As of April 27, the class had reported 16 professions of faith, with some of the converts following through with plans for baptism! The interest generated by this class among our students has caused us to continue with more of these classes next year.

SEMINARY OUTREACH

The BMA Seminary president recently completed a weekend of Bible study at Northwest Baptist Church in Port Orchard, WA. Pastor Larry Geraldson and his dedicated corps of hard-working leaders are doing a monumental work in that area. Their goal is to establish at least 7 indigenous churches in that area within a 20 year period. Seminary professor Elton McCann has been invited to teach this summer in the Philippines at our Bible college. Dr. McCann plans to teach an evangelism course, utilizing the Evangelism Explosion method. We are extremely grateful for this invitation from Bro. Doyle Moore. Present plans call for him to be assisted by BMA missionary Darlene Carey. We need to raise substantial funds for supplies and travel expenses. Designated offerings for that purpose can be sent to the Seminary with the notation "Philippines Class."

TEN PROFESSIONS OF FAITH!

Results of the newly-inaugurated evangelism program based on "Evangelism Explosion" are meeting and EXCEEDING our highest expectations! As of March 11, there have been a total of 10 professions of faith, and several other people are in various stages of receiving the Gospel. Pray for our faculty and students that they will be able to reach these other people!

S.T.A.F.F. BREAKFAST SET FOR DALLAS, APRIL 15

It is time again to make reservations for the annual S.T.A.F.F. (Students, Trustees, Alumni, Faculty, and Friends) Fellowship breakfast. The breakfast this year is scheduled for Wednesday morning, April 15, 7:00 a.m., at the Holiday Inn near the south entrance of the airport. Dr. Thom South, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church of Cabot, AR, will bring a challenging and inspirational devotional. Reservations need to be mailed to the Seminary by April 3. Total cost of this buffet breakfast, including gratuity, is $12.50 per person.

13 BAPTIZED IN BURMA!

Thanks to the generosity of churches in the Tombigbee Baptist Association, Mississippi, and some other friends, Dr. Philip Bryan was able to make a trip to visit the Missionary Baptist Church of Myanmar where BMA Seminary graduate Myint Aung and his wife, Malsawmi, are serving as missionaries for the BMA of America. The trip lasted from Monday, February 23, until Friday, March 6. BMA missionary Dale Thornton and Philip Bryan spent a week in Yangon (formerly called Rangoon) the capital of that country, where they were treated with royal hospitality! Myint Aung and "Auntie Saw" (as Malsawmi is called lovingly by their people) are doing a great work in Burma. During the some 5 years they have been our missionaries, at least 15 churches and several mission points have been established. The church in Yangon has 56 members, 13 of which were baptized on Sunday, March 1. Among those baptized on that day were a husband and wife, a 90 year old woman, a mother and daughter, and a set of twins! Many--if not most--of the members baptized by Aung were former Buddhists! God is using their church in a mighty way as they utilize a type of "life-style evangelism." And . . . their congregation is composed of several races and nationalities! The love of Jesus and the power of the Gospel is able to break down all human barriers!

During the trip, 3 days were spent in Bible study and practical leadership training. There were also 4 worship services, with the Sunday baptismal service in a rural retreat type setting on some property that Aung owns. That afternoon we had the service with "dinner on the grounds" (including FRIED CHICKEN for the Americans and fresh coconut!), and wonderful fellowship. Four brethren from the Palawai tribe had spent 10 days en route to Yangon. They represent the 14 churches and mission points and approximately 200 people who are members of those churches. The loving people were very eager to study the Word of God, even sitting on the floor as we taught! The Yangon church was full for all of the services there (approximately 100 in attendance each time). Forty people attended the leadership studies. We can all praise the Lord for the wonderful work that He is doing in Burma! Although temperatures were in the mid-90s Fahrenheit all of the time we were there, the rainy season had not started and there was virtually no humidity.

DANNY BULLOCK TO BRING COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

BMA Seminary trustee and graduate Danny Bullock will be the speaker for this year's annual Commencement Exercises. A total of 12 students are expected to complete their studies and receive their respective degrees. All friends of the Seminary are invited to share in the celebration service on Monday, May 18, at 7:00 p.m. We are thankful for these students, their families, and the churches they represent.

SEVERAL OTHER INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS READY TO COME!

Several more international students are wanting to come and study at BMA Seminary. The Seminary administration and trustees would like to know the wishes of our supporting churches relative to these students. We promised earlier that we would not promote our international student program any longer than our people desired. There is a couple from Russia, a student from Belarus, 1 from Burma, and several from Africa and Haiti who have made inquiries. Please let us know!

SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEK, MARCH 9-13

Bro. J. D. Brown, of Hallsville, Texas, director of "Voice and Vision Ministries," is scheduled as this year's speaker for the Brand Lectures during the Seminary's annual Spiritual Emphasis week. Bro. Brown, a native of Mississippi, will illustrate his messages by means of chalk drawings and special lighting effects. Mrs. Charlotte Brown will also bring several special musical numbers. Services will be held in Dorman Memorial Chapel on Tuesday and Thursday (March 10 & 12) at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. All area BMA pastors and churches are invited to attend and receive a special blessing !

E.E. PROGRAM OFF TO GREAT START!

The new evangelism program based on "Evangelism Explosion" inaugurated this semester is off to a great start. On the first evening that teams went out witnessing, there was one profession of faith! We are extremely grateful to Seminary Trustee Jack Hobbs and several of the members from Ash Street Baptist Church in Muskogee, OK, for taking the time to assist us in the beginning of this program. It is our prayer that this program not only will have a decided impact on the ministry of the BMA Seminary and her graduates but also on our BMA work in general! Please join us in sincere prayer that the Lord will bless and use these efforts for His glory! It is the plan that from now on each new graduate from BMA Seminary not only will be an effective "soul-winner" but will also be qualified as a teacher-trainer in the E.E. program and thereby continue that work by training other people in our churches.

S.T.A.F.F. BREAKFAST SET FOR DALLAS, APRIL 15

It is time again to think and make plans toward the National BMA of America meeting and the S.T.A.F.F. (Students, Trustees, Alumni, Faculty, and Friends) Fellowship which we observe annually. We are pleased with the past success of the annual S.T.A.F.F. breakfasts and what they have accomplished in terms of support and promotion of the Seminary by her friends. We are anxiously anticipating the meeting this year.

The breakfast this year is scheduled for Wednesday morning, April 15, 7:00 a.m., at the Holiday Inn near the south entrance of the airport. Dr. Thom South (a second generation alumnus of the Seminary), pastor of Bethel Baptist Church of Cabot, AR, will bring a challenging and inspirational devotional. Reservations need to be mailed to the Seminary by April 3.

AMY COVINGTON IS FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE ASHER SCHOLARSHIP

In August 1997, the Glenfawn Baptist Church of Cushing, Texas, established the "Louis F. Asher Scholarship Fund" as a memorial to their former pastor of twenty years, who died in November, 1996. L. F. Asher had also been a professor at the Seminary for twenty-five years. The purpose of the scholarship fund is to promote and reward good scholarship by providing at least one scholarship each spring semester to an outstanding student who has completed one semester of studies. The first recipient of this scholarship is Mrs. Amy Covington of Magnolia, AR. Announcement of the award was made and the scholarship was presented during a special chapel service on Tuesday, February 10. Funds from this scholarship fund are used to contribute toward tuition, fees, and textbook needs of the recipient. Amy's father, Robert Crank, and brother, Shane, are graduates of BMA Seminary. We are extremely proud of this fine student and very grateful that this good church has chosen to remember their late pastor in such a worthwhile manner. Interested friends and churches are welcome to contribute to this fund. Checks for such offerings should be made out to Glenfawn Baptist Church, and the Seminary staff will see that they reach the proper place.

ENROLLMENT TOTALS FOR THE YEAR

During the current school year the following number of students were enrolled in their respective degree programs: In the fall semester (1997) a total of 63 on-campus students were enrolled (A.Div., 12; B.A.R., 9; M.A.R., 14; M.Div., 19; others, 9). Five were enrolled in one January inter-semester course. In the spring semester (1998) a total of 57 on-campus students were enrolled (A.Div., 9; B.A.R., 12; M.A.R., 12; M.Div., 18; others, 6). Seven students are enrolled in correspondence courses. This year, 8 of our students were from foreign lands, including 2 each from Poland, Russia, and China; and 1 each from Iran and Mexico. Six students received degrees last May, and 12 have filed for graduation this year.

1998 BIBLE CONFERENCE

Jacksonville College and BMA Seminary officials have finalized the program for the 1998 Jacksonville Bible Conference. The 54th session of this popular conference will be held February 16th and 17th. Based on Romans 10:15, the theme this year relates to "Glad Tidings" and the various kinds of people who bring that Good News. The conference will feature challenging and informative preaching, inspirational music, and warm fellowship. Program participants will be from three states and two foreign countries. Be sure to highlight these dates on your calendar! The Texas State WMA will meet, and there will also be time allotted for fellowship, academic advising for prospective students, visiting, and committee meetings. A complete program will be mailed to BMA papers in the next few days.

"HOME FOR CHRISTMAS UPDATE"

On Thursday, January 15th, we put Bro. Igor Petrov and his family on a plane which would take them back home to their native Russia. We expect that this family will contribute much for the Cause of Christ in the coming years! We thank very sincerely and fervently all of the churches and other friends who contributed toward the purchase of their plane tickets. You gave enough for the tickets and enough more money to just about resolve the deficit that we had been experiencing in the Eastern European Scholarship Fund! Praise the Lord! Such generosity shows once again that God will use His people to provide for the needs of the Seminary and also other students who are supported by this fund. Besides living expenses, we will still have about $1800 to pay in medical expenses not covered by health insurance when Bro. Igor had surgery in December.

FALL 1997 DEAN'S LIST

FACULTY & GRADUATES WHO ARE READ!

Have you noticed recently that several works written by BMA Seminary faculty and graduates have appeared in practical and useful places? Accordingly, these people are being "read." Dr. Elton McCann is the author of the Baptist Publishing House's adult Sunday School book for the current Winter quarter, The Upper Room Discourse. Another BMATS professor, Dr. Ronnie Johnson, authored the current Christian Growth Literature's adult student book and teacher's guide on Patterns for Prayer. BMA Seminary graduate Allen Tilley had two extremely practical articles published in the November/December issue of the Discipleship Journal and another such article in the most recent Pray! magazine. These are only some of the publications authored by those associated with BMA Seminary. Future news release will provide information about other professors and their published work. Watch as helpful publications written by BMA Seminary graduates and faculty show up in diverse places throughout the year.

JANUARY INTER-SEMESTER 1998

Two classes are scheduled for the January Inter-Semester 1998. NT 422, New Testament Interpretation: Hebrews, will be taught by Professor Jim Shine. This course is an undergraduate course, but it may also be taken for graduate credit. NT 631, New Testament Theology, will be taught by Dr. Wilbur Benningfield. Both courses are scheduled to meet daily, four hours each day, for two weeks, M-F, January 5 - 16. This is a most convenient and interesting way to make a detailed study of one of these subjects and earn three semester hours of credit. They may by "audited" also for non-credit. Interested students should contact the Dean's Office immediately to learn details about pre-registration and exact times of meeting.

SPRING SEMESTER 1998

The 1998 spring semester will begin on Monday, January 19. Although official enrollment for these classes will be conducted on that same day, all students are advised to pre-enroll. A number of new students are making plans to begin their studies in January, including several who are moving from out of state. A few apartments are still available.

As usual a full slate of courses in Biblical Studies, Theological-Historical Studies, Church Ministries, and Christian Education will be offered. A convenient, one-day class schedule may be utilized by students. Even though tuition rates are quite a bargain (only $60 per semester hour), a number of scholarships and other financial aid is available. Prospective students should contact Dean Wilbur Benningfield immediately to ensure that their applications for admittance can be approved in time for the first classes.

NEW EVANGELISM PROGRAM

All students beginning their studies after January 1, 1998, will be required to complete two semesters of evangelism. These are new courses which will involve the very successful "Evangelism Explosion" (i.e., "EE") program. The goal is that each one of our graduates, besides being a competent and effective "soul winner," will be certified as a "teacher" and "trainer" in the EE program. With this certification BMA Seminary graduates will be qualified and authorized to teach the program to the members of their respective churches and other pastors. It is well-known that growing and dynamic churches have staff and lay members who have a keen interest in reaching the lost with the Gospel of Christ! Please pray for the BMA Seminary faculty, administrators, and students as we begin this effort! The EE classes this semester will meet on Monday evenings at 7:00.

1998 BIBLE CONFERENCE

Jacksonville College and BMA Seminary officials are in process of planning the 1998 Jacksonville Bible Conference. The 54th session of this popular conference will be held February 16 and 17. The conference will feature challenging and informative preaching, inspirational music, and warm fellowship. Be sure to highlight these dates on your calendar!

"HOME FOR CHRISTMAS"

The theme of this year's annual Christmas Offering is "Home for Christmas," with offerings designated for the travel expenses of Russian student Igor Petrov and his family for their return home. Bro. Petrov will complete his MDIV studies in mid-December. Plane tickets have been purchased for their return to Russia on January 15th. That will enable them to be home in time to participate in many of the Christmas activities held in their country in the days following Christmas. Surplus funds received above the amount of the tickets will be used to provide for other expenses which are paid by the Eastern European Scholarship Fund. That fund is currently depleted. We sincerely thank all of our churches and friends who so generously provide for the financial needs of these families!

MISSIONARY GRADUATES

At this year's annual missions symposium in Little Rock, it was a special joy to see once again many of our BMA Seminary graduates who are serving the Lord all around the world! The ministry of Baptist MISSIONARY Association Theological Seminary has truly contributed to a great MISSIONS ministry!

November 1997

STUDENT BODY OFFICERS

Student body officers have been elected for the 1997-98 school year. These students include: President Raif Turner, Vice-President Dan Carson, Secretary-Treasurer Hugh Dusza, Assistant Secretary-Treasurer Josh Tao, Third-Year Representative Roy Duncan, Second-Year Representative Gary O'Neal, and First Year Representative Justin Hardin. We are very thankful for the hard work that our student body officers contribute toward the vitality of this institution!

NEW EVANGELISM PROGRAM

The BMA Seminary faculty have adopted some very important changes in each of our degree programs, beginning with the next semester.

1996-97 AUDIT

Seminary administrators and trustees have received the official audit for school year 1996-97. Once again, we are happy to report that BMA Seminary operated "in the black"! Paul C. Carroll, chairman of the Seminary trustee financial affairs committee prepared an analysis of the audit. In his closing remarks, he stated: "1997 was a good year. Total Revenue for 1997 was over expense by $13,000. Gifts and Grants were at record levels--$514,000. Student Aid support went down $32,000 and will probably be less in 1998--(fewer foreign students). Student Aid expense should also go down for the same reason."

Offerings credited to our churches were up considerably also. This was largely due to the new scholarship programs for American students and the generous scholarship support for the Eastern European students! We praise God for His blessings and thank each of our friends and supporting churches who helped make this possible! I know that the Lord still blesses generous and missions-minded people and churches!

ARTICLES ON WEB PAGE

BMA Seminary faculty members have several interesting articles which have been "published" on my personal web page. There are articles concerning: Bible versions, tongue-Speaking, baptism in the Spirit, Baptist history, tithing, God's sovereignty and man's responsibility, and practical tips concerning Sunday School growth and organization, as well as devotional materials. Most of these are directly on my web page and one is "linked" to another's page. Several faculty members have their own web pages. Most of these are "linked" directly to the Seminary's page. The correct "address" is: http://www.oocities.org/Athens/Delphi/8297/ This address must be typed in correctly, observing carefully the distinction between upper and lower-case letters.

EASTERN EUROPEAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND NEEDS HELP

For the past three years many people and churches have been very generous and faithful in providing funds for the Eastern European Scholarship Fund. Although the current needs are not so much as last year, we still need much help. Currently the fund is "in the red." So, we still need generous support. The Igor Petrov family will be returning to their homeland (Russia) soon after the first of the year. Good airplane tickets at a "bargain" rate have been purchased, but they must be paid for in December. The current shortfall does not include the cost of these tickets. Our Russian families have also had some very expensive dental bills during the past months. The Seminary pays for such medical and dental expenses out of this scholarship fund. Gifts to this scholarship fund directly benefit the students and their families. Please help us put this program back on a "solid footing!"

FALL ENROLLMENT REPORT

During the current semester, we have 63 students enrolled--a slight increase over last year. The student body includes 40 students from Texas, 6 from Arkansas, 9 from other states, and 8 from foreign countries--including 2 each from China, Poland, and Russia, and 1 each from Korea and Mexico. Thirty-one of the American students are from BMA churches. There are 7 from the Southern Baptist Convention, and 19 from other Baptists. Six are not Baptists. There are 54 men and 9 women enrolled. The average age is 27. The full-time-equivalency is 42.25. Enrollment is broken down into the following degree programs: Associate of Divinity--12, Bachelor of Arts in Religion--9, Master of Arts in Religion--14, Master of Divinity--19, Special (i.e., non-classified)--8, and Auditor--1. As usual, approximately half of the students are enrolled in graduate programs. There are 2 husband and wife duos enrolled, and 1 BMA foreign missionary home on furlough--Darlene Carey, missionary to the Philippines.

SEMINARY FAMILIES GROW

>Three of our students have recently experienced growth in their families. Jeff Russell (M.Div. student from Morrilton, AR) was married to Holly Garner from Wynne, AR, on September 13. Bro. Jeff is pastor of Enon First Baptist Church of Iola, TX. Two weeks later, Danny Linville, B.A.R. student from Ennis, TX, was married to Briggie Ybarra from Jacksonville, TX. Bro. Danny is serving as youth pastor at Afton Grove, Baptist Church, Jacksonville. M.Div. student Bryan Dickens and his wife, Angie, are the proud parents of Zachary Albert Dickens, who was born on September 18. Bro. Dickens is the pastor at Chesswood Baptist Church of Livingston, TX. To each of these fine people we extend our warmest congratulations and wish them God's richest blessings!

SEMINARY TOUCHED BY DEATHS

Various members of the BMA Seminary "family" have been touched recently by the deaths of three special friends. During the first weekend in October, Dr. Elton McCann lost his brother-in-law, Rev. Jeff Rousseau of Pensacola, FL. Bro. And Mrs. Rousseau were really like parents to Bro. McCann, who was born on the day that the Rousseaus married. Galina Baraniuk (wife of seminary student Fiodor Baraniuk) lost her father in late September. She had not seen him since leaving Russia in July 1995. Dr. David Edwards, associate dean at Dallas Theological Seminary, died on September 20. Dr. Edwards was a close friend of mine. He was the treasurer of the Council of Southwestern Theological Schools, an organization in which I am currently serving as president. Let us pray for these good people that the Lord will supply all of their needs and be very close to them during this time of hurt.

MILESTONES IN THE MINISTRY

In recent weeks many of our ministers and their families have celebrated special milestones in their lives. A number of our BMA people were married soon after the close of World War II. In recent months they have been cerebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversaries. Some of these same ministers began their ministries at about the same time. A different kind of milestone is the ministry of Rev. and Mrs. Gaylan Henry of Forth Worth, TX. Bro. Henry has been the pastor of South Park Baptist Church for 40 years! We count it a joy and privilege to count Bro. Henry among our graduates. All of these people have been worthy examples and encouragement to the rest of us.

EASTERN EUROPEAN SCHOLARSHIP NEEDS

We are extremely grateful for the dear friends and churches who continue to support the Eastern European Scholarship Fund. Although the current needs are not so much as last year, we still need much help. The Igor Petrov family will be returning to their homeland (Russia) soon after the first of the year. We will need to buy 4 or 5 airplane tickets for their return, the exact number depending on the status of their infant son, who will be 2 years old in January. These families have also been struck by some very expensive dental bills during the past month. The Seminary pays for such expenses out of this scholarship fund. Gifts to this fund directly benefit the students and their families.

APPRECIATION AND RECOGNITION FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE

Although all employees were extended appreciation on August 14, three were especially recognized and honored at BMA Seminary's annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Dinner. Two of those honored are husband and wife. Dr. Ronnie Johnson, who is Professor of Christian Education, and Alicia Johnson, who is Public Services Supervisor in the library, were recognized for FIVE years of service. Besides their Christian service at the Seminary, they are faithful members of First Baptist, Jacksonville. Ronnie is Sunday School Superintendent, Alicia sings in the choir, and they both direct the church's Sunbeam program. Alicia serves also as Cherokee District Sunbeam Promoter. Dr. Johnson has published a number of articles in BMA publications and scholarly journals and dictionaries. He also has a very interesting and family-oriented Web Page (http://members.aol.com/RJeffJ/index.html), with plenty of pictures, music, and down-to-earth articles.

Dr. Harold McNeill was recognized for TWENTY-FIVE years of service in the Christian Education and Theological-Historical Studies departments. For the past TWENTY-FIVE years Dr. McNeill has served in the chaplain's office at Rusk State Hospital in Rusk, Texas. During the last twelve years of that time, he has been Chaplain Supervisor. In his capacity at the hospital, McNeill has involved many of our students in a special program of Clinical Pastoral Training. Haland Judy McNeill have two children--Harold, III, and Joy. The McNeills are members of Enterprise Baptist Church of Jacksonville. Interestingly enough, all three of these employees were reared in the Southwest Arkansas area, Columbia County. Seminary trustee chairman Ronnie Chesser brought a most timely address to the some forty employees and spouses who were gathered for the dinner. He challenged us to be at our best as we begin a new year of service at BMA Theological Seminary.

SLIGHT INCREASE IN ENROLLMENT

As this release is being written, the Dean's Office is tabulating final enrollment figures for the fall semester. Present figures indicate that enrollment will be slightly up from last year's number of students. A full report with statistics showing a breakdown by degree programs and the number of men, women, international students, etc., will be given next month.

RUSSIAN MUSICIANS BLESS THE CAMPUS

As a special chapel program on August 26, a very talented and dedicated group of Russian men and women brought a most inspirational and entertaining service. "Blagavestiye" ("Good News") on U.S. tour from Moscow, Russia, spent four nights and five days in Jacksonville, with other concerts at First Baptist, Woodland Heights Baptist, Jacksonville Middle School,

and KVNE/KGLY radio in Tyler. They later traveled to the Little Rock and Houston areas where they performed several times. My wife, Janice, and I had made a trip with the group one Sunday while we were in Russia in the summer of 1996. I was invited to preach at the service. I was very surprised when after the service many people even asked for my autograph! That was a first --for me! Besides serving as interpreter, Seminary student Fiodor Baraniuk made the arrangements and scheduling for the trip to Texas and Arkansas. The other Russians (Igor Petrov family) were quite joyful to see their old friends again!

PASCHAL BIBLE LECTURES SET FOR OCTOBER

Dr. Lewis Drummond, director of the Spurgeon Institute at Beeson Divinity School on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, is the scheduled speaker for this year's annual "William Newton Paschal Memorial Bible Lectures," October 6 & 7. As an authority recognized world-wide concerning the life and ministry of the British Baptist preacher and pastor Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Drummond will bring four inspirational and informative messages concerning Spurgeon. The Seminary family is quite happy that this renowned Baptist brother will be on our campus. Prior to assuming his position at Beeson, Dr. Drummond was president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

RACHKOVSKIS NOW BACK HOME

On Tuesday, August 26, Oleg, Natalie, and (little) David Rachkovski flew back to their home country of Belarus. It would have been quite a blessing to have been present for their reunion with their families! Natalie had not seen her parents in several years, and both sets of grandparents were quite anxious to "spoil" David!

LOUIS F. ASHER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Glenfawn Baptist Church of Cushing, Texas, has established the "Louis F. The scholarship will be awarded in one of the first chapel services of the spring semester. Funds from this scholarship will be used to contribute toward tuition, fees, and textbook needs of the student. Interested friends and churches are welcome to contribute to this fund. Checks for such offerings should be made out to Glenfawn Baptist Church, and the Seminary staff will see that they reach the proper place.

ASHER BOOK NOW IN PRINT

Bro. Louis F. Asher's book on John Clarke is now off the press. Copies can be ordered by telephone from the publisher: 1-800-788-7654, or from Mrs. Asher. Her phone number is 1-903-586-2760. The cost is $14 per copy plus shipping and handling. BMA bookstores are expected soon to have copies available also. This book will be a welcome addition to the library of anyone who is interested in early American Baptist history.

SEMINARY BEGINS FORTY-FIRST YEAR OF SERVICE

When school bells ring on Monday, August 18, BMA Seminary will begin her forty-first year of service! As usual, some thirty classes leading toward four different degrees are being offered. Most prospective students are impressed with the flexible class schedule. All but two of the classes are block classes that meet only once per week. This allows many students to schedule all their classes on one day, allowing better opportunities for part-time work or a pastorate. Convenient scheduling, economical tuition rates, pleasant surroundings, and a dedicated faculty and staff await those who are ready to avail themselves of such a splendid opportunity! Some financial aid is available also! Any dedicated and serious student should be able to come study at BMA Seminary!

NEW BROCHURE

Seminary officials are very pleased with the new, four-color brochure that Dean Benningfield and Dr. Philip Attebery designed. "Thank you, brethren!" We will be pleased to send the brochure, as well as a catalog, to anyone who asks.

WEDDING BELLS

As this is being written, Seminary library staff member Cecilee George is making final preparations for her forthcoming marriage to Justin Walker on Saturday, August 2. Cecilee and Justin, we extend our warmest congratulations!

WEB PAGE AND CATALOG

Most of the Seminary's catalog, including an on-line request for application form, is now included on the Seminary's web page. The page also features class schedules, devotional and theological articles written by the faculty, pictures, and news releases. E-mail to various faculty members can be sent directly from the page. Please look at the page at: http://www.oocities.org/Athens/Acropolis/3386.

END OF FISCAL YEAR

July 31 marked the end of BMA Seminary's fiscal year. Complete tabulation of financial records have not been completed, but apparently this was a very good year in that department. It certainly was in service rendered to students and the churches they represent. In mid-August a detailed report will be sent to the pastor of each church contributing during the 1996-97 school year. The "people in the pew" were willing to share their resources with the students' educational needs. God always blesses such generous stewardship! Thank all of you very much!
