saregamaremix - 12 oct 2002 - karthik raaja lounge... |
your last tamizh project was with madras talkies, and the current movie album with kavithalaya. Is this according to a selective plan of working with prestigious banners ? |
i have only tried to be selective about the scripts and i found that the script for album was good.
|
were you also involved in the selection of singers for the songs of the movie? |
yes.
|
how did shreya ghoshal come to make her debut in tamizh songs through album ? |
Shreya has been in touch with me for a very long time. She must have been 13 or 14 years old, when she was judged winner of the episode of Zee TV Sa Re Ga Ma show, where i was one of the judges. Following that, i had given her a singing assignment of a telugu single, for police officers forum. She had subsequently been under contract for singing in Devdas. When she came out of contract, she contacted me and that is how she came to sing chellamai chellam.
|
regarding dr.ilayaraaja singing the thazhampoo number... |
I had requested him and told him about this folk song and he agreed to sing.
|
regarding madhu balakrishnan... |
We were looking for someone to carry a song as good as Yesudas and Madhu fit the bill. The result is for the audience to appreciate.
|
in the Pillai Thaamarai song, vizhi was pronounced as viLi by the singer. How was it missed ? |
I had ensured that the lyricist and director were there for the recording, and would verify lyrics/pronunications while i concentrated on the tune. Not to put the blame on them, as there is a collective responsibility, but still some things came out incorrect. as far as possible, i do try to make sure that the tamizh pronunciations are correct. even for dumm dumm dumm i had spent time with sadhana sargam to get the correct pronunciations.
|
for all the songs were lyrics written to tune or vice-versa ? |
A mix of both, actually. nilave nilave, pillai thaamari and thaazhampoo had lyrics written to tune. The remaining songs were composed to the lyrics.
|
you seem to be preferring to compose tunes to written lyrics ? |
Composing tunes to lyrics is better, because, if lyrics are written to tunes, about 80 percent of the times, the value of the tune is depreciated. You try to express a lot with the tune, however when the lyrics come in, the song may tend to lose its flavor. In my opinion, Kannadasan, was the only poet/lyricist who could do justice to a tune with his words.
|
the situations given for composition for the songs and the way they turned out in the movie - were they in sync ? |
No, there were minor variations, but its ok. Nothing major.
|
what were your inspirations for each individual song ? |
The director's narration of the situation.
|
any raaga that influenced any particular song ? |
Consciously, there was no design to base a song on a raaga or anything like that.
|
what is your favorite song amongst the songs of this album ? |
My favorite is chellamai chellam.
|
do you feel that your songs have been done justice in the movie ? |
No. The audience would know. People who have listened and liked the audio, have felt disappointed. The reason being that the director was not able to shoot the songs in an expensive manner because of budget restraints and all the cast & crew except me and a few others were all new including the director. This is the reason for the producer not spending much money on the project. Of course, this cannot be explained to the audience.
|
about your future projects ? |
three roses should be the next release. Other projects are: katradhu kaathal alavu do it boyfriend

album-music review |
vignesh ram - sep 2002 - nilacharal.com |
These days, it is not often that you come across film albums not determined by market forces, with the basic mantra of music companies being :It’s all about money, honey. Result? You have music that caters to the fast-food culture, and good, sensible music gets a quiet burial. But once in a while there does blow in the whiff of fresh air, so to say music buffs that not everything is lost, like Album. After an eclipse period of nearly one and a half years after the release of superhit songs of Dumm Dumm Dumm, Karthik Raja is back with Album. Kavithalaya’s films with Ilaiyaraja’s music like Sindhu Bhairavi, Punnagai Mannan, Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal etc. had great songs, which are still reverberating in the ears of music fans and to keep up that tradition Karthik Raja has put up great efforts and is indeed successful in giving a superb album.
The album begins with the peppy, dance number Thathalikkudhey rendered beautifully by T.Karthik, Thippu and Sadhana Sargam. Ilayaraja’s elder brother R.D. Bhaskar’s son Paarthi Bhaskar has penned the lyrics. The more you listen, the more it gets into you. The tune has unexpected twists and turns but still in synchrony. Then comes the pick of the album, chellamaai chellam by Hariharan and Shreya Goshal and lyrics are by N.Muthukumar. Devdas fame Shreya Goshal makes her debut in tamil film music through this song. The song is sure to captivate the listener by its soft and lilting tune. At places it has shades of Kavidhaigal sollavaa song in Ullam kollai pogudhey. Kaadhal vaanoli begins with Harish Ragavendra’s enchanting rendition and then Sujatha picks up the song and mesmerizes the listeners. It had been a long time since we had heard such songs in tamil film music. Lyrics by N.Muthukumar are so poetical and meaningful. Next one is the bit song Muttaikull is a modification of a famous folk song of children by N.Muthukumar with enthusiastic voice of Bhavatharini. Madhu Balakrishnan stole away the hearts of music fans’ in Bharathi especially ethilum ingu song. He returns back with his soothing voice in Pillai thamarai song. You can’t resist the feeling like hearing a mallu song.Lyrics are by Kabilan and after his super hit Aal thotta Boopathy song, which had meaningless lines, has proved his caliber here as a good poetical lyricist. Next comes the pleasant surprise ,where Ilaiyaraja and Sadhana Sargam have joined hands in giving a beautiful folk number. Ilaiyaraja sings in Karthik Raja’s music after a long gap and Thank God his voice is not wasted in a pathos songs or Mother sentimental songs. Nilave nilave song by Shankar Mahadevan and Tippu is sure to be a chart buster and youngsters’ favourite. It’s a fast paced dance number penned by Thamarai. The lyrics are very interesting which lists out various “isms” like Socialism, heroism, realism, hitlerism, kaadhalism, capitalism, etc. It is really disheartening to be in a lag phase after composing for a few films and when your younger brother is a leading music director and father an already established musical legend. So Karthik Raja has taken a colossal leap in ALBUM and all the songs are cool. ALBUM gives no work for the Fast Forward button at all. Another thing to be mentioned is that, the lyrics are not injured by dominating percussions and that too written very decently.
