Name that Cereal Character
Language Arts, Social Studies, Art

Objectives:
    1. Students will identify several different cereal characters.
    2. Students will create an original cereal character and character description.
Focus/Set Induction: Play the "Name that Cereal Character Game". Teams will earn points according to how many clues they need to name the cereal character. (See game rules.) Rationale: Characters are very common in advertising. Companies use them to help people identify or "put a face on" a product, especially children’s products such as cereal. Materials: Activities:

Instructional Input:

    1. With students’ help, make a list on the overhead of several different cereal characters.
    2. What are some common characteristics of cereal characters?
    3. Why do they think cereal companies use cartoon characters on cereals?
    4. Talk about cereal characters from other countries. Sometimes familiar cereals in the United States have different names and use different characters. Show some examples (Topher’s Cereal Character site --http://www.oocities.org/EnchantedForest/3278/cereal-guide.html -- is an excellent source for these.)
    5. How do students think that the characters reflect the culture that companies are trying to sell to (gender, culture, age, etc.)?
Guided Practice:
    1. Show students a picture of a cereal character.
    2. Guide students by helping them to create a character description using the Character Traits worksheet on the overhead.
    3. Give students examples of types of characters they could create.
Independent Practice:
    1. Have students brainstorm and create an original character.
    2. Have students write a character description using the Character Traits worksheet.
    3. Have students draw a picture of their character.
Evaluation:

Closure:

Display the students’ drawings. Have students read their descriptions to the class and see if other class members can identify which drawing matches their description.
