Real Name: Courtney Merriam (Female) |
Webmistress Alias(es): Amethyst |
Significance of Alias(es): I like to use Amethyst because purple is my favourite colour (as seen by the website backgrounds on Amethyst's Haven) and Amethysts are also my favourite gemstone! Amethyst is featured in Classical mythology as well. Below is some information concerning her importance or function in Ancient History.
According the mythic history, Amethyst was a beautiful maiden who was turned to stone by Dionysus (a Greek God who presided over wine, revelry, wild animals, emotional release, and fertility to some extent). One day, Dionysus was very angry and uttered an oath that he would "do harm" to the first mortal that crossed his path. In the history of mythology, a God or Goddess could not renege on an oath. Unfortunately, the first mortal to cross his path was Amethyst. However, Artemis (the Greek Goddess who was associated with the moon, hunting, wild animals, uncultivated areas, virginity, and childbirth), intervened by turning Amethyst into a white stone to protect her from the coming danger. After Amethyst's transformation, Dionysus repented and to pay "tribute" to the poor maiden he poured wine over the statue turning the stone to purple with some streaks of white remaining. This Greek myth explains the existence of the Amethyst gemstone. Sources for the above information in this section, came from the books: The Golden Age of Myth and Legend by Mr. Thomas Bulfinch and Who's Who in the Ancient World written by Ms. Betty Radice as well as the website: Jewellery Spotlight: Amethyst. |
