The Adventist position

"Righteousness by faith is one of the simple facts laid down clearly in God's word. It is within the reach of every trusting soul. It was found by the thief on the cross. It is found by the unlettered thousands whose ancestors for generations have been steeped in heathen darkness, but who have now surrendered to be possessed by a risen Saviour.

"The question might be asked, How can a man who has lived a life of sin, and who repents in his dying hour, be found righteous before God? How can he be prepared for the heavenly kingdom? The complete answer to this question is found in Christ. Not only does the death of Christ atone for the sinner's guilt, but the life of Christ is substituted for that of the sinner. In Christ, the sinner is counted as being altogether righteous, as having fulfilled every duty which God requires. He is reckoned as having been baptized, since Christ was baptized. He is counted a Sabbath-keeper, since Christ kept the Sabbath. He is regarded as a tithe-payer because Christ was a tithe-payer, and so on through the list of Christian duties.

"And so through Christ the sinner is credited with having fulfilled all the requirements of God. Thus Christ lived the righteous life for the sinner before his conversion, and if the new-born soul does not immediately pass away in death, Christ will now live His righteous life within him, and lead him into the path of obedience to all of God's requirements. The Christian will testify by being baptized; he will keep the Sabbath and pay tithe, and perform all other duties which flow from the new life of Christ within. For the period before conversion Christ has lived righteously for the believer; for the period of life after conversion Christ lives righteously within the believer". Page 8.
