"I need space. That is what people say when they are stressed. I need some room, and in a populated world, space is sometimes hard to come by. We are surrounded by things and people and sounds that invade and are part of our space. Some are not bothered by this as it appears to be a natural type of thing, but others need more room. We feel crowded when there is too much to do, too much to see, too much to learn-there are many reasons. We cannot take a vacation and find a quiet, peaceful island and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a quiet place close by. Too often even in those quiet places, people must take along their music without regard for the need for quiet and peace.
Space is a commodity. It should be used wisely. Too much building and too much crowding is not a healthy condition of living, yet it would seem there is not much choice. So one must look for space and sometimes the space is not physical, but an inner environment. We can all go within. You've heard that many times, perhaps so many that it has become a phrase that one hears and discards. Within is space - more space than you may think. There is room to explore, to see, to learn. There is even quietness and peaceful silence. How often do we go there? Busy lives consume the days and nights and a day followed by a day and suddenly a month and a year, and so on. What is the reason? It is, it appears, because there is not much emphasis on personal space. No one says "When was the last time you visited yourself?" It might seem a very odd thing to say, but when was the last time you went inside and visited your emotions and feelings and state of mind? When was the last time you checked your inner space? Perhaps it needs tidying up or cleaning out. Perhaps things have changed. Perhaps you are different and not even aware of it. To search for space, we must be aware of it. We can physically share space with others and not feel so 'crowded' if we take time to go into our own space.
The interesting thing about inner space is that it expands. It is not static, actually it has no boundaries except for the physical form which does not, in essence, limit its size. It is a matter of becoming familiar with that space, just as one would when visiting a mountain top, a park, or any comfortable area. For some, visiting a space with no boundaries is somewhat frightening. That is why so many do not go there, but it is also a place of peace and comfort and insight."
