"Those who do heroic acts are noted, as well they should be, for acts that are outstanding and beyond the normal range of reactions. Heroism calls for acknowlegement and the praise is well deserved. But what of the acts of heroism that are not of the moment, not a sudden rescue or an amazing story of survival? They go on each day in many different ways and for the most part they are not noted or spoken of to any degree. Courage, which is a long, consistent aspect is usually played out in a very quiet way. Perhaps it is the quietness that allows for the long and arduous difficult role that so many are required to play because of circumstances in their lives. Whether it is dealing with a handicapped or ill person or handling one's own limits, one's own pain, the daily requirement is necessary - the fortitude to keep going, the strength, the patience, the courage which are all aspects of fortitude.

Fortitude is a process that can be developed with patience. It can be developed or rather assisted with insight and perseverance. It is the attitude and/or feeling that is built with endurance. This endurance, along with the other aspects, can change a person, can cause a negative circumstance to be a lesson that others can learn. In the overall picture there are many cases of individual fortitude that far outweight those of the more obvious types of heroism.

In the event that you are required to exhibit fortitude, it is wise to be aware that it will not come about all of a sudden just because you will it to be there. It is a daily practice and sometimes it takes many steps of fortitude during the day to just handle negative situations. Remember 'You are not alone.' You have guidance within. When things are the most overwhelming, when it seems that the world is tossing and turning, become as quiet as you can under the circumstances. Draw on inner strength. Try to separate yourself from that which overwhelms, try to balance, to find the core or center of you as a person. Build patience as one builds a wall - brick by brick, or thought by thought or whatever will power is necessary to continue. Realize that you have much more strength than you are aware and that this strength can be developed each day. No one says this is easy, and those who are experiencing fortitude know the truth of that statement.

Fortitude cannot be given to you as a gift. Guidelines can be set forth, but you must develop it on your own. Each individual has a somewhat different approach, but all must approach its development with courage and determination. Know that you will be given strength as you call upon it."
