Peace of Mind

"Do you ever let your mind rest, and don't say when you sleep, because it certainly isn't resting then, it's just at a different speed. We're talking here about consciously giving the mind rest. You may say, meditation isn't for me, as that is when most people think of the mind being at peace. That state and Yoga, which allows for the balancing of the mind, are fairly familiar ways to calm the mind, but what if those two avenues do not draw you to them?

We must first admit or be aware of the fact that the mind can be on overload. There can be such a stream of constant thinking or analyzing or 'chit chat' that there is no break, no pause, no space for peace of mind. The pattern becomes so ingrained that when the chatter stops, there is an uneasy feeling as if something is missing that should be in place. It is as if a comfort zone has been removed. As is usually the case, we continue to use the patterns that bring us the most comfort, and as a result of this, there are many who never experience peace of mind.

Peace of mind does not mean removing all thoughts, contrary to what some may think. It means the mind shifts into a type of thinking that contributes to the well being of the entire person. It is not a stressful frame for thoughts, but rather an environment that provides for the feeling of peace as well as creative positive thoughts.

This peace of mind can be felt as in different layers or levels. There can be a slowing down of the mind which allows for a sort of rest, or there can be an experiencing which brings peace to the mind. The sound of water is a soothing sound to many and can contribute to a calmer state. Music of certain sound frequencies can also contribute to the calming of the mind. These two things are not always at hand. How then can we find peace of mind during the work day? It is difficult for you are surrounded by people's energies, sounds, and environmental stresses. However, with intent, it can be done. To close the eyes momentarily and take a slow deep breath can create a momentary pause, a breather for the brain. Then, to speak slowly and softly when it is apparent that stress is speeding up the mind and the brain feels overworked. If it is possible, it is good to take a few minutes where the environment is quieter and there are good energies. If you are in the midst of lots of activity and this is not possible, then using will power and slower breathing will alleviate some of the stress.

Peace of mind is as necessary to the mind as breathing is to the body. If it can only be practiced in small amounts, that will help. As you become more adept, you will find that the outer noise and stress of the world will be less intrusive. You can create a bit of peace by practicing it and then becoming at peace. Your attitude and change of mind will then reach out to others. Individually, we can spread peace a bit at a time by being at peace."
