"I have a Dream...
that one day we will be judged, not by the color
of our skin, but the content of our character."
- Martin Luther King
Motivational Psychology is the study of why we do things. What is
it that makes us act the way we do, and in our context, buy the way we
buy. One salesman uses the hard sell, the other a soft sell. Still others
use the power of...attraction. We have all been exposed to crooked salesmen who thought they weren't doing anything wrong. Integrity, caring, service, customer oriented, honesty, and the best selection and prices - all the things that attract.
While the Russians try to force their inferior culture on neighbouring
countries causing resentment, the USA produces merchandise and a way of
life that is appealing to foreigners - they've got to have it. There is
no need to push. The Americans go into countries to do business; the Russians
accuse them of robbing the country. Who is "pushing" and who
is "attracting?" And what is it about Amazon.com that brings
people there to buy a billion dollars worth of books, videos and music?
Attraction! Dr. Lant has made a fortune in teaching others how to sell their products. Just be careful, he's so good, he may sell you something you don't want!
United States, compared with Russia: a historical laboratory of
what not to do in business and prosperity. What not to do - governments
set up road blocks for companies, hurdles to overcome after which they
can make money. Let's not set up roadblocks for ourselves either.
The Power of Attraction
Dr Philip E. Humbert
The most powerful forces in the universe are forces of attraction.
Gravity stands out as an obvious example, but there are others. Magnetism,
the force that fascinates children and that keeps notes stuck on our refrigerators,
is another. Other common examples are the forces that keep molecules and
atoms from flying apart, and of course the most powerful force known to
humans: love.
Given the power of attraction, it seems ironic that the most common
tools used in business are "push" technologies. Selling is mostly
about "push." Advertising is an attempt to use attraction, but
it's usually a poor attempt and we feel pressured by all the junk mail
and salespeople who try too hard. Think of all the consultants and motivational
"experts" who try to "motivate" employees or create
"team spirit." Most of that is about "pushing" people
to do something they really don't want to do.
In sharp contrast are mountain climbers, marathon runners and most successful
entertainers. These people are drawn forward by a dream. They have "the
hunger", or rather, it has them, and it won't let go! Imagine being
on Mt Everest, at 28,000 feet above sea level, knowing you have a thousand
feet still to climb. It's far below zero, the wind is howling, your lungs
ache and you can't feel your feet because of the cold. No force on earth
could "push" a person to do that. So why do they do it?
Sir Edmond Hillary said, "Because it's there."
They are drawn by a dream, by the challenge. There is a force that
attracts them to the summit, and some of us can not rest until we have
done our utmost to respond.
It's called: Attraction in Action!
I get email every week from individuals wanting to build a coaching
practice, or some other business or professional practice, using the power
of attraction. From my mail, it seems that for many, it doesn't work.
Obviously, there are complex reasons and every situation is different,
but let me suggest a couple of ideas about how to put this wonderful power
of Attraction to more effective use.
1. Be sure you're chasing the right dream. Climbing mountains attracts
me; becoming an entertainer does not. Attraction would never motivate me
to be a starving actor, waiting on tables and hoping for my Big Break in
New York. Some of you are chasing someone else's dream! We attract the
things we truly, deeply, honestly and profoundly want in life. Check to
see if you're really chasing your own dreams, or the dreams that someone
else wants for you. March to the beat of your own drum.
2. Understand that Attraction is not a "magic bullet".
There are no short-cuts or get-rich-quick schemes, as far as I know. Even
Albert Einstein needed years to understand his own theory of relativity!
Most millionaires are over age 50 and have steadily, patiently built their
fortunes over many years. Attraction is a process. It's the force behind
your actions, and it tends to be quite efficient, but it's not magic and
the results rarely come overnight.
3. Get yourself together. Attraction requires a massive investment
in your personal foundation. I'm fond of saying that the taller and more
magnificent the building, the deeper and more expensive the foundation
has to be. Attraction works for happy people. It works for people who's
relationships are pretty solid. It works when our bank accounts balance
(the accounts don't have to be large, but they do have to be in working
order!). It works when our bodies are healthy and our sense of humor is
easy and relaxed. To use the power of attraction, be an attractive, likable
person!
4. Understand the Law of Large Numbers. No matter who you are or
what you do, most people will never meet you, like you, or buy your goods
or services. That's just a fact. But, the more attractive you are, the
more likely it is that some of them will be drawn to you IF they can find
you. So market your SKILLS (Note: don't market your ego…there's an over-supply
already) shamelessly! Give away free samples, take every opportunity to
display your talents, and "just do it"! Let people know who you
are and what you can do.
5. Practice, Practice, Practice! Do whatever it is you do. Do it
for free. Do it all day, and on the weekends. Practice with family, friends,
neighbors and the family dog, if she'll cooperate! I love the story Tony
Robbins tells about himself. He knew he needed to become a better public
speaker, and thought it would take him about 100 speeches to improve. Being
an impatient fellow, he set a goal of giving 3 speeches per day and found
ways to improve his speaking ability within a month. How long do you want
it to take you to get better at what you do?
Attraction is the most powerful, most fundamental force in the universe.
It is always easier (and more fun!) to live a life that draws our goals
to us, than it is to chase them down and capture them. But, life rarely
entrusts us with either privileges or responsibilities until we are ready
to handle them. In 1999, commit to developing the personal foundation and
taking the actions that will inevitably draw the things you really want
in life to you!
