SPRING / SUMMER DANIEL BOONE NEWSLETTER, 1998

Welcome from Executive Director, Randall Andrae

Hello and welcome again to the world of one of America's explorers, Daniel Boone. This is our second issue of The Daniel Boone Tribune, a publication dedicated to preserve the memory of his historic life.

The new year is bringing many exciting changes to the Daniel Boone Home and Boonesfield Village. A new theater has been built on site where we will show documentaries to our tour groups. Also, in September, will come the installation of an 1800's organ being reconstructed by Wick's Pipe Organ Company with actual pieces of an instrument that dates back to 1865. In addition, the many wonderful events scheduled at the home this year have something in store for every member of the family.

Last, but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many that made the 1800s Candlelight Christmas Tour the great success that it was! A warm thank - you to our sponsors - Hazelwood Farms and Washington station, KLPW, 1220 AM - for their generous support. And a special thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers without whom the events would not have been possible. Next year is the 200 th anniversary of Boone's arrival in Missouri. This year we'll be busy preparing for that celebration. We hope everyone joins us again to make this year a successful one for The Daniel Boone Home and, if you've never visited, we encourage you to do so and discover this extraordinary man's life and contributions.

Annual Civil War Reenactment

The annual Civil War Reenactment and encampment is scheduled for October 3 and 4, 1998. Blessed with good weather, last year's reenactmentwas a huge success. Visitors watched and enjoyed the battle between the Union and Confederate soldiers. Soldiers charging each other on foot and on horseback amidst the resonating sound of rifles, pistos, and cannons made for an exciting scene. Six units - eighty reenactors in all - participated.

Visitors were also able to greet the actors and walk through the encampments to ask questions about the authentic uniforms and artillery. There was a Civil War era fashion show in the garden behind the home, and on-going tours were held. Individual volunteers as well as reenactment units are still needed for this years event.

Please contact John at 314-798-2005 for more information on how to participate.

Last year more than 2500 visitors were guided through the Boone Home, the Schoolhouse, and the Old Peace Chapel. They were also treated to demonstrations on openhearth cooking, spinning, and woodworking. The Village was bedecked in cedar boughs and ribbons, and musicians - performing by the light of candles and hearth - set the mood for our Christmas back in time while Daniel and Rebecca received guests in their drawing room.

Our 1998 Candlelight Christmas Tour will be just as enchanting - the perfect family outing for the holiday season. Admission will be $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 4-11. Warm clothing should be worn. Volunteers are needed to help host this event. For more information, call John at 314-798-2005.

New Theater and Old Stagecoach Inn

There is much excitement in Boonesfield Village about the new theater which holds 100 people. Visitors will begin their tour of the Village in the theater where they will view a 20 - minute film on the life and times of Daniel Boone. They will then be guided by an interpreter through the Village.

One of the things that will be seen on the tour in 1999 is the Old Stagecoach Inn. The four-story structure which dates to the 1800's could originally be found enroute between St. Louis and Foristell. It has been taken apart and will be reassembled in the Village.
