The Parent Page

This page is for the parents of my students.  Often, you have asked me what you can do to improve your child's work at school.  This is the answer:

1. Monitor Your Child's Progress Reports.  Every other week, your child will be given a printout of his/her current average in class, with grades for the following categories: Writing, Note-taking, Classwork, Spelling Homework, Grammar Homework, Lit Quiz Average, Spelling Test Average.  You can easily spot any area in which your child needs improvement.

2. Stay aware of the Homework Page, and be sure your child is working on schedule.  Spelling is due the first day of each week, Grammar the second.  Each Wednesday, children are given a pass-fail quiz to determine if they've completed the reading assignment for the week.

3. On many Fridays, the students are given notebook tests.  These are usually ten questions, and the children have one minute to find the answer to each question in their notebooks.  Thursday night, you and your child should go over his/her notebook to make sure it is organized, legible, and easy for your child to find information.

4. Writing is the most important part of Language Arts.  You can find the materials I used to teach children how to answer essay questions on tests, write a book report or other evaluation essay, and the five paragraph essay. (This is the format used in Florida Writes.) They are on my webpage for you to review with your child.  Review the steps in writing and make sure your child understands these writing styles.

5. Many ideas in Literature are discussed in class.  The most important part of Literature in school is taking proper notes.  Students are taught to use the Plot Structure method for notetaking.  Review this with your child to be sure he/she understands the process.

6. Students who miss material or have problems keeping up can review just about everything on the website.  By clicking on the various links on the pages, you will find just about eveything covered.  Children who miss the film of Anne of Green Gables, for instance, can find the text of the original novel on the page.  The same is true of much in Mythology and Poetry.  You can focus on specific units by searching my General Index.

7.
Bookmark and monitor the class Blackboard.  This will be continually updated to keep you informed of projects, activities, and special assignments which are not listed on the homework page.

8. Of course, all parents need to monitor their child's Planners.  Teachers shall be using them to contact you, and you may contact us quickly that way, too.  Teachers may also be contacted via e-mail.  Write me at tclpin276@firnvx.firn.edu.  If you wish to contact other school personnel, you may e-mail Mrs. Linda Sullivan, Sixth Grade Guidance Counselor, at sullivan_l@popmail.firn.edu.

9.  A number of parents (and a few who are home teaching their children) have asked where they can purchase their own copies of books and films used in class.  I've made arrangements with Amazon.com to allow you to purchase these materials right from my page.  Just click on the logo below for more information.  You may return to The Multimedia Classroom by clicking on our banner below:
