It's quite appropriate that an actor would become president of the United States. The character: a representative of the people The script: "Evil Empire! Marxist-Leninism!" The translation subtitle: "Us poor rich rugged individuals are being beaten up by taxmen who take our bubblegum money!"
The seven fat years - for whom?
The editor of the "liberal" Wall Street Journal, Robert Bartley wrote a book, called The Seven Fat Years.
Compared to what, the black plague?
The author claims to compare the Reagan years to the Carter years in terms of economic growth rate. According to him:
Carter was elected in 1973 and served until 1982.
Reagan was elected in 1982 and served until 1989.
So tell me, is he astoundingly stupid, or is he doing the neo-Nazi trick of revising history and messing with statistics? Is the editor of the Wall Street Journal a liar or just dangerously incompetent?
My vote is on liar - the dates are wrong in a very convenient way - 1973 was a relatively booming economic year, while 1982 was a recession. The result is a low growth rate. When you compare 1982 to 1989, you get a high growth rate. So basically, he's taking two recessions from outside of Carter's presidency and blameing him for them, while cutting out the early 80's recession - which coincidentally started at the same time as the "Reagan Revolution"!
Can you trust a conservative's word on anything?
Reagan asked congress for 16.1 billion dollars more than they actually spent...Yet Rush said on page 128 of See, I told you so (that's not an arrogant title!) "Don't blame that [deficit] on Reagan, He tried his best to reduce spending, but every one of his budgets was pronounced "dead on arrival" by the democratic congress". (The last bit could have been partly true if he hadn't added the "dead on arrival" bit, but Rush was just too arrogant to resist) If Reagan was "trying his best" to reduce spending, he must have been using some reverse psychology...
In conclusion, Reagan is "a man to whom we Americans owe a debt that we will never be able to repay" -Rush Limbaugh
