The Oregon Education Act for the 21st Century , a state law enacted in 1991, mandates that Oregon students meet clear, specific academic and performance standards to earn a Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM). Progress is measured by classroom assignments and by state tests given in "benchmark" grades 3, 5, 8, 10 and12.
Mr. Keuter's Block classes work toward acquiring the knowledge and developing the skills necessary to meet state
standards for grade 8 in writing, reading/literature, public speaking and social studies. Below are links to specific information from the state of Oregon's Department of Education websites detailing the expectations exactly. But quite simply, students need to prove
themselves proficient in:
- writing a clear, cogent essay with acceptable ideas and
content, organization, conventions, sentence fluency, and citations.
- reading 8th grade level material and demonstrating
acceptable comprhension, text analysis, and the ability to extend
understanding.
- public speaking with acceptable delivery skills, ideas
and content, organization, and word choice.
- social sciences analysis, and the expected knowledge of
World History and U.S. History.
