“What happened?” Hanover pressed.

“We heard them arguing.” Chad said. “But we couldn’t see them. Then Ann shouted something.”

“What?”

“’Don’t!’”

“She shouted the word don’t?”

“Yes.”

“In fear?” Hanover asked.

“Yes.” Chad dropped his hands back in his lap and closed his eyes. “Then she screamed.”

“Ann screamed?”

“Yes.”

“What was it like?” Hanover asked. It was a cruel question. When Chad opened his eyes, they were damp.

“It was horrible.” he said.
