The Junior class is advised at the beginning of each school year to take one or both of these tests during the second semester of their Junior year.  There are various reasons why the Juniors should do this, the main point being that if they are not satisfied with their test scores, they can take the test over again.  It is not uncommon to see test scores that are lower than expected after the first attempt.  Being tested at an unfamiliar site, outside their usual surroundings, can cause some discomfort and lead to a lack of concentration. The key point to remember is that if a student takes the test when they are advised to, there will be enough time to retake it if needed.
Students can register to take the test on-line (link below) or they can obtain the registration packets from the guidance office.  At this time they are given a registration booklet and sample test that will help prepare them.  Sample tests are also available from the guidance office for students who register on-line.  It is strongly suggested that the student take the sample test in their spare time so that they may get a feel for the type of questions asked and the topics that will be covered.  Students can also take the practice tests provided on the ACT and SAT websites.  In addition there are websites listed below where students can answer practice questions.
Students often ask which test they should take, the ACT or the SAT.  Colleges in West Virginia accept both, so taking either of the two will suffice. Some colleges located out of state will take only one or the other.  Students should contact these schools and check for their test preference.
When the student fills out the registration form, they will find a section which asks what colleges they wish to have their scores sent to.  It is extremely important that they code in the number for the West Virginia HIGHER EDUCATIONAL GRANT PROGRAM as one of their choices.  Fill in the code number for this program so that the ACT or the SAT can send your scores to the WVHEGP.  The code number can be found in the registration booklet.
Below you will find a short summary of each test, please read this carefully.  Our school code is 490-812, you will need this number to register.
THE ACT
(AMERICAN COLLEGE TESTING PROGRAM)
SCHOOL CODE: 490 812
The ACT website: HTTP://WWW.ACT.ORG
The ACT consists of the STUDENT PROFILE and the ACT interest inventory, which students complete when they register for the test.  The test itself is composed of four timed tests of educational development taken at a test center under standardized conditions.  The tests in English, Mathematics, Reading and Science reasoning, emphasize the problem-solving and reasoning skills rather than the strict memorization of facts.
Scores are reported in a range of 1(minimum) to 36(maximum).  The composite score is the average of the four individual tests.  The average national composite score is about approximately 21. A copy of the students scores are sent to Bishop Donahue.  A file of the score is kept in the Guidance Office and a score label is put on the students permanent record.
