Montague farm on the old pike.
Death
Notice states: “Fielding
Montague
died Friday, Aug. 2, 1901, at his late home in Wharton township, of paralysis,
age 82 years. Mr. Montague suffered a stroke a number of years ago, the affects
of which he never recovered from. He leaves a widow, three sons, John,
Fielding, and Grant; and one daughter, Annie. The oldest, Mrs. Calvin Dean,
died two or three years ago, at Homestead.
Mr. Montague was one of the “old pike boys,” having been for
many years a wagoner and stage driver over the once-famous thoroughfare. He
owned a farm on the pike, 15 miles east of Uniontown, where he lived for many
years prior to his death. He was a good citizen and a good neighbor. He was
always an industrious man, but for the past few years, owing to his age and
crippled condition, he has been unable to do any kind of work.
Some years ago when
squirrels and other small game were plentiful in that region. Fielding
Montague’s (farm) was a favorite stopping place for hunters. One could always
count on plenty to eat, a comfortable bed in which to sleep, a good fire to sit
by if the weather was cold, and a genial host. The writer has spent many a
pleasant evening at his fireside, listening to takes of the old pike and other
interesting reminiscences.”

.........THE CATAMOUNT STORY.........
This is the Catamount Story as Fielding
Montague told it to his Grandchildren
When I was a little boy of twelve I had some
sheep. We lived on a farm over in Farmington just below the Dinner Bell. The
old pike ran right between our house and the barn. One day while I was on the
front porch watching for the stage coach to go by, I heard the sheep bleating
and then saw them running down along the fence toward the barn. Just then I saw
why they were so scared. A big catamount was sneaking up behind them. I
whistled for the dog and sicked him on that old catamount. I then ran into the
house to get the musket. I couldn't reach it so I dragged a chair up to the
wall and got up on the chair to get the musket. It is a good thing that my
daddy always kept it loaded, because I forgot all about the ammunition. I ran
out of the house and across the road. As I climbed the fence I could hear the
dog barking tree. I ran up through the woods and there it was. The biggest cat
that I had ever seen. He was standing on a fallen log with his back arched,
hissing and spatting at the dog. I put the musket to my shoulder and took
careful aim. I squeezed the trigger and heard a loud roar as the pain went
through my shoulder. I landed on the ground with the musket on top of me. All I
could see was smoke. I got up and brushed myself off. I could hear the dog
barking trail in the distance. I went over to the fallen log and there were
deep claw marks in the log left by the big cat as he left it. To me this was an
indication that I may have hit it. All at once I heard the dog barking tree
again. I began running toward the barking. When I got to the edge of the woods
I could see the dog had the catamount treed in the middle of the field. I ran
over to the tree and there he was on a limb about twenty feet off the ground.
He was hissing and spatting his paw at me and the dog. I didn't have any more
ammunition so I pulled out my penknife and opened the blade. And there I stood
under the tree with only my dog and penknife and an empty musket wondering what
to do. Finally I decided to go to the edge of the field and see if I could call
my sister. I ran to the edge of the field and began to scream for Minnie.
Finally she heard me and answered. She said, "What are you screaming
about?". We were so far from one another that it was hard to understand
each other. I was screaming, "Bring me some ammunition". Finally she
said OK and then was silent. I ran back to the tree with my penknife drawn
ready to do my best if that thing pounced on me. I was counting heavily on the
dog helping me out. Finally I heard Minnie screaming from the edge of the
woods. She had the ammunition but was afraid to bring it out to me. I ran back
to where she stood at the edge of the woods and got the ammunition. She was
crying and said that she was going to tell on me. I was not allowed to take the
gun out alone. I took the ammunition and loaded the old muzzle loader. I didn't
know how much powder to put in so I just guessed at it. After loading the gun I
went back to the tree in the center of the field. The catamount was still in
the tree hissing at the dog. And the dog was still barking and carrying on. I
got directly under the cat and raised the gun vertically. It was easier to hold
that way. I waited until the big cat opened his mouth for a big hiss and then
let him have it right in the mouth. Again I didn't see him come tumbling out of
the tree as I was again lying on the ground surrounded in smoke. I heard the
dog barking again in the direction of my sister and this time I got to my feet
a little faster. As I started toward the edge of the woods the barking had
stopped and I could hear growls and yips. I could also hear my sister
screaming. I then saw that the dog and catamount were in the ditch surrounding
the field next to the woods. I knew then that I had hit the catamount but he wasn't
dead yet. By the time I got to the ditch the dog was finishing him off. I put
my arm around Minnie and begged her not to tell on me as we both stood staring
into the ditch at the big cat. I had called the dog off and he was now standing
beside us wagging his tail and panting. Every once in a while he would look at
the catamount and wag his tail and bark as if to say, we got the best of you.
We left the catamount lying in the ditch as we began walking back through the
woods toward home. Minnie promised not to tell on me and helped me put the gun
and ammunition away when we got home. Dad later found the decomposing catamount
in the ditch and wondered who had killed it. Like a good sister Minnie kept her
word and never told, however, I think my father figured it out when he later
found the muzzle loader hanging on the wall unloaded, but he never said
anything about it. Sister Minnie died a short time later at the age of twelve.

Montague house:
Always full
Area Personality

By Mary Ream
City Editor
The Montagues house in Addison Township was always full. But not just full of Montagues. The faces
were just as likely to be unfamiliar.
“We always had” strangers around,” recalls Leah Belle
Montague, 68, matriarch of the constantly changing household. “We never turned
anyone away.”
The four Montague children were encouraged to bring their
friends home for a meal or to spend the night. Leah says her husband, Skiles,
who died in 1976, was “so sweet to teenagers, but he told them they had to tell
their mothers first.”
In the morning, to find out how much breakfast to fix, Leah
would count the shoes. There was a
large crowd for dinner every Sunday. It was normal to have 40-50 people there
for Thanksgiving dinner.
Nearly 20 years ago, she took in four other children whose
mother wasn’t able to care for them. Leah Belle kept them for three years, providing
them with food and clothing and seeing that they were properly trained and
attending school. Then, one day without notice, their mother came and took them
away.
Although it broke their hearts, the Montagues let the children
go with their natural mother. Last summer, one of the boys, now grown and
married with a baby of his own, appeared on Leah Belle’s front porch just to
visit. He had stopped to tell her how much she had influenced his life in his
brief stay with her.
Over the years, she also took care of 14 different elderly
people, none of them relatives, who didn’t want to go to a nursing home and had
no place to go. Some were lovely, some cantankerous. Only one ever paid
anything toward his keep.
“I’ve always had a houseful,” says Leah, smiling as she
remembers the noise and confusion. Extra mouths meant more work in the kitchen.
Did it play her out?
“I loved to work,” she says, adding confidentially, “I was
real heavy, then, too, and I felt better than I do now.”
Supporting such an extended family had to strain the family
budge. But Leah made the most of what she had on hand. The Montagues had
oatmeal and flour ground from the grain they raised on the farm, and filled the
canning cupboards with produce from their large garden.
Leah regularly baked 100 loaves of bread each week, and sold
most of it, along with homemade butter she had churned, jars of jelly, and sometimes potato salad
and other sought-after country-fresh foods. Her day regularly began at 5 or 6
a.m.
The Montagues had 60
bee hives, and sold well over 1,000 pounds of honey in a season. People from
the Confluence and Addison areas, including those living around Yough Lake, and
even as far away as Pittsburgh, drove
for miles to the farm, and back the dirt road to the house for their weekly
supply of bread and butter.
Leah’s husband, who worked as a taxidermist, blacksmith, and
farmer, among many other jobs, often helped her with the work. He could bake
bread and even embroidered. In turn Leah did her share of farm work.
“I was busy all the time,” she says, “but I sure enjoyed it.”
She also served as a midwife for many years, and delivered
hundreds of babies. “They were all boys but two,” she recalls.
Even with all the commotion in her household. Leah kept control
of the situation. She believed in discipline. “I never had any trouble from any
of my kids… Children today are left go.
Parents go away and let them alone. That’s why they are the way they are
today.”
She has four children: Skiles pf Philadelphia; Tom, living in
the Morgantown, W. Va., area; Ruth Bollinger, New York; and Eleanor Burkett, on
the home farm at Addison RD 1. There are 12 grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
During the thanksgiving snowstorm of 1974, Leah’s husband and
grown children took the tractor and went to Route 40 and the other roadways,
collecting people who were stranded, and brought them back to the warmth and
safety of the Montague farmhouse.
“I had just baked 20 loaves of bread,” Leah remembers, “and I
cooked a big pot of beans and roasted a
lot of meat.” Then they passed out blankets and everyone found a place to
sleep, most of them on the floor. Altogether,
there were 68 people, both family and strangers, squeezed into the house until
the roads were cleared and they could shovel out their cars and go home.
Leah, a charter member of the Confluence Church of the
Nazarene, continues to send regular contributions to her church, even though
she has spent the past two months as a patient at Monongalia General Hospital
in Morgantown, where she underwent a skin graft and othe treatment on her left
leg due to diabetes.
Her family has never known her to fight or argue. When the
conversation becomes controversial , she’ll simply say, “You eat – I’ll
starve.”
She was born Leah Belle Crawford. Her birthplace in
Summerfield and the home where she grew up in Watsondale are both now covered by Yough Lake. Except
for the five years when the family lived in Michigan, she’s spent all her life
in the Addison Township area, living on the farm for the past 46 years.
Leah is anxious to return to her more active life on the farm.
She’s not used to being inactive. “I was busy all the time,” she says.

NOTE! Hi
Fielding,
Robert
died after waging a truly courageous battle against bladder cancer on November
16, 1984 in our home in Ormond Beach, Florida. He died (as he requested
of me) in his own home, in his own bed, with no medical apparatus around him
and with me there with him.
Bob loved to fish, gab, play the guitar and sing, drink beer and drive on
the beach at Daytona. He loved to watch the stock car races on the
beach at Daytona and then when the Speedway was built he went to all the
races at the Daytona Speedway. He knew the founder of the Speedway and
Nascar (Big Bill France, Sr.) when Bill France was owner of a gas station
that he (Bob) frequented in the early to mid '50s. We had a
small place on Lake Kerr in the Ocala National Forest where Bob spent
Thursday through Sunday fishing, partying, playing his guitar and
singing with his forest friends . He did this for 16 years.
Robert Ray Montague may have been a Sgt in the Army but if he was it was
brief. He told me that after he became a Sgt. he got in a fight and
they took away the Sgt rank and he was demoted to Corporal and was a Corporal
when he was hurt and then retired from the service.

The old
saying about history repeating itself came true when the Somerfield bridge -
carrying US Route 40 across the Youghiogheny Lake - was opened on August 15,
1947. The first person across was Ray Fielding Montague, operator of a store in
the vicinity. In 1818 - 129 years ago - the first person across the old stone
bridge over the Youghiogheny River at Somerfield, Pa. was Mr. Montague's
great-grandfather David Montague, driver of a stage coach between Cumberland,
Md. and Brownsville, Pa. The stage coach man lived at the foot of Chestnut
Ridge on a property that remains in the family to this day. The old stone
bridge, known as the "Great Crossings Bridge," was begun in 1809, and
was opened on July 11, 1818. A lot of changes have been made in the span of
years that came between the "firsts" that came between
great-grandfather and great-grandson. In the early 19th century David Montague
was high on the seat of his stage coach, with the reins of several horses in
his hands. When Ray F. Montague went across, with his eight month old
granddaughter, Linda Rae Prinkey, beside him, he controlled at the touch of his
hand a machine many times stronger in horsepower. The stone bridge spanned only
the river; the new highway bridge carries the road high above what will be a
vast reservoir created by the Confluence dam.

Skiles Farwell Montague & Leah
Belle Crawford Montague
******ORIGIN AND ANTIQUITY OF THE NAME
MONTAGUE******
The name
Montague is one of the oldest surnames in existance. It came to France with the
Northmen from Scandinavia and thence to England with Drogo in 1066 from
Normandy, and originated in the Latin de monte acuto, meaning "of or from
a sharp or pointed mountain" [a mountain peak]. It has been written in
various forms as de Monte Acuto, Monteacuto, Montacute, Montagute, Montaigut,
Montaigu, Montagu, Mountagu, Mountague, Montague. There is a mountain in the
Pyrenees of considerable height called Montacuto. In the department of Aisne,
in France, may be seen the ruins of an old feudal Castle, named Montaigu,
situated in a town of the same name. This castle was an important fortress in
the tenth century. It was besieged and taken by Louis d'Outre-mer in 948, was twice
captured by the English, once in 1375 and again in 1424, and was finally taken
by Charles VI in 1444. There was also a strong fortress of the name of
Montaigu, in Vendee, that was twice besieged in the uprising of 1793. There are
several other places in France bearing the name of Montaigu; but that from
which the English family sprang was Montagu-les-Bois, in the district of
Coutances, in Normandy. Of this place one writer says, "Its ancient Lords
were famous in the middle ages." In France there were Lords of Montagu,
Counts of Chalon, and Eudes; there was Pierre Guerin de Montaigu, Grand Master
of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem in 1208; there was Gilles Aycelin de
Montaigut Archbishop of Rouen, and the founder of the college of Montagu at
Paris, which existed from 1314 till about 1850. Two brothers of the family of
this Archbishop attained the dignity of Cardinals. The name Montagu is a word
of three syllables, pronounced Mont-a-gue, and has no connection with the name
of two syllables Mon-Tague, which is a corruption of the Irish name Mac Teague,
meaning the son of Teague. Montague a thousand years ago in Normandy was
spelled Montagu. In the Doomsday book of William the Conquorer (1066) it is
spelled Montagud, the "d" silent. The early generations in England
spelled the name in Latin, Montacute. This was caused Camden says, on account
of continuous wars with France, there was a hatred of anything that was French.
In English records of the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, the name is often
printed Mountague. In early records in America and upon tombstones it is
spelled Mountague. Co. records of Spotts and Orange Va., have the name
Mountague and Montecue. The name of Peter Montague on the Va. Muster roll of
1624 is spelled Petter Montecue. [Montecue and Montigue are simply a
mis-spell.] The old Peerages in England have the name variously Mountague,
Montague and Montagu. The titled families however have invaribly spelled the
name Montagu. This includes the Viscounts Montagu, the Dukes of Montagu, the
Earls of Halifax and Sandwich and the Dukes of Manchester, and they undoubtedly
have the most ancient way of spelling it. The final "e" as the name
is commonly spelled, adds nothing to it, though from long usage one may be as
correct as the other.

Dear
Fielding,
You asked me to write some stories
about our childhood for your book. These are some of my fondest memories from our childhood.
Fielding you , Bob Nicholson , & I were the three
musketeers. You were not only my brother, you were my best friend. I will
always remember how close the three of us
were. Bob was my brother too. We had a lot of good times with our
Science Club. Filling Bunny Day’s teeth & cutting up frogs & operating
on the pig & snakes. Remember when the bridge at Somerfield opened up. Tom
was 5, I was 10, and you were 15. We sat on the bank by Cornish’s and watched
Uncle Ray and Linda go across. That was 54 years ago, 1948.
Remember when we made our own zoo
out of the farm animals & tried to charge people to see them.
Remember when we made mud pies out
of mud & eggs from the hen house and mud coffee and fed it to Frankie
Frazee and mom spanked us for it.
“Easter” Pappy hooked up the wagon, Mom packed homemade bread &
Butter, Easter eggs, salt, something to drink and we went to the ramp patch on
Gobblers Knob and had a picnic. We had great fun together as a family. Pappy
always hid the eggs before we woke and we had to find them before going to
church. We didn’t have lots of money but we had lots of love and God.
Remember when the stray dog killed
the chickens and Pap got mad , so you & I gave the dog a trial and found
him guilty and hanged him under the pine tree and then got scared and screamed
for Mom. She cut him down but it was too late.
Remember when we played church
under the porch and you were the preacher. The Lord is still the source of my
strength.
Remember Bob’s and my wedding night. You and Tom tried to
set a trap for us at Pete’s cabin and spy on us. We had 44 blessed & happy
years together. We loved each other more every year. I will never love anyone
else. There is none in this world as good & sweet as he was. God is so
lucky to have him in his hand in Heaven. He is playing trumpet with Gabriel.
Bob’s and my first Thanksgiving as
a family. We went home to have Thanksgiving with the family. Pap always liked
to play jokes on people so he thought he would play one on his new son-in-law
so he put the whole leg & thigh on Bob’s plate and to his surprise Bob ate
it all. He got a big kick out of that. He never left him forget it.
From the time we went to
Listonburg grade school together until you went away to college we were
inseparable. You, me, & Bob Nicholson. We were the trhee musketeers.
Love,
Ruth

*** A Birthday Gift for Hannah ***
Happy birthday my dear grandchild.
You are the apple of my eye.
You are my only grandchild to have,
My name which came from way up high.
Long ago on a mountain peak,
A child was born in the snow.
He descended to the valley floor.
He was the first Monte-Acuto.
His descendants were Vikings,
And
the Northmen warriors they say.
They sailed South from the Baltic,
And settled what is Normandy today.
William, Robert, and Drogo too,
Sailed to England with a crew.
At hastings the battle they won,
Now all England's rulers were new.
They became the Kings and Queens,
And some were Dukes and Earls,
Or Knights in shining armour.
That glistened like jewels and pearls.
These rulers of the English land,
Were descendants of the Montague clan.
Richard and Peter became discontent,
And then to the New World they ran.
Richard sailed to Massachusetts,
And brother Peter to Virginia.
Where a big family he did raise.
His career bloomed like a zinnia.
His descendants were true and good,
Doctors and lawyers many became,
Many were farmers and preachers too,
Our first president was one of them.
And
so you see my dear grandchild,
Your great name is worth much more,
Than money, gems, or fine gold,
You are a Montague for sure.
Happy Birthday my dear Hannah!
Your birthday present is my name.
Though I can't give you riches,
I will always love you just the same.
Your Grandfather,
Skiles F. Montague

In the year 2000, exactly 200 years
after the birth of David Montague, there were only four Montagues still living
in Fayette or Somerset counties Pennsylvania. They are, Ruth Hannah (Montague)
Bollinger and Elenora Elizabeth (Montague) Burkettt, the two daughters of
Skiles Farwell Montague and Leah Belle (Crawford) Montague and Thea Belle
(Montague) Prinkey the daughter of Ray Fielding Montague and Nettie Jane
(Rodehaver) Montague and Charlotte Leah (Montague) Kalenic daughter of Skiles
Fielding Montague and Charlotte Vern (Buehrig) Montague.
The only other traces left of the
Montague family in Fayette and Somerset Counties is the gravestones in the
Sansom Chapel cemetery in Fayette County and the Addison Cemetery in Somerset
County and a short country road in Addison Township called “Montague Road”
along which three of the above mentioned women live in separate houses built on
