(O)Molloy;

Variant Spellings; Loag, Loague, Logue, Maloy, Meloy, Miley, Millea, Moloy, Mullee, Mulloy, Muloy, Mulvihill, Sloey, Slowey.

Molloy is the name of two different septs. One sept held extensive territories in Co. Offaly and claimed descent from the legendary Niall of the Nine Hostages, High King of Ireland in the fourth century. The other sept of the name is in Co. Roscommon.

O Maolmhuaidh is the Irish translation of the Offaly Molloys and it means descended from a noble chieftain. The Roscommon Molloy name is translated as O Maoil Aoidh or the servant of Saint Aedh. These two completely different names in Irish would seem to indicate different origins for the Offaly and Roscommon Molloys.

The Offaly Molloys had good relations with the English in early times. Albin O'Molloy, bishop of Ferns, was one of the officiating prelates at the coronation of Richard 1, "The Lion-Hearted" in 1189.

Monsignor Gerald Molloy (1834-1906) was a theologian and scientist while the composer James Lyman Molloy (1837-1909) wrote "Love's Old Sweet Song". After the Williamite wars many O'Molloys joined their fellow Irishmen as 'Wild Geese' on the continent.

The motto of the Molloys is 'Gearaigh agus Bogh Buabh'.
