(O)Sullivan;

Variant Spellings; Gulivan, Shorelahan, Soolivan, Soraghan, Sorahan, Soran, Sulavan, Sulevan, Sulivan, Sullavan, Sullevan.

O'Sullivan is the third most common name in Ireland and is mainly to be found in Munster.

The two major septs of the O'Sullivans, O'Sullivan Mor and O' Sullivan Beare live in what is arguably the most beautiful part of the country, the Beare and Bantry area.

In Irish the name is O Suileabhain meaning descended from the one-eyed or black-eyed one.

Donald O'Sullivan Beare (1560-1618) was the hero of the siege of Dunboy Castle and of a hazardous and courageous march to Ulster. His nephew (1590-1660), the historian was in the army of Spain, while Col. John William O'Sullivan was with Bonnie Prince Charlie in the '45.

Owen Roe O'Sullivan and Tadgh Caolach O'Sullivan were Gaelic poets of the eighteenth century. Barry Sullivan (1842-1900) was a famous actor as is Maureen O'Sullivan today. Sir Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert and Sullivan fame was of Irish descent. John L. Sullivan (1858-1918) was a world champion heavyweight boxer.

The motto of the O'Sullivans is 'Lamh Foisteanach Abu'.
