Alternator Technical Tip
Problem is all too common. Install a few more accessories and what happens to the alt, your charging system takes it in the shorts. The stock charging system on a scout uses an AC Delco 63 amp alternator, which is barely sufficient for a stock scout. The cheapest easiest, no hasslews way I’ve found to addresses this problem is to install an alternator with a higher amperage output. Well It just happens to be that the high output alternator form a 1989 Chevy Suburban is a direct, NO MODIFICATIONS swap, With the scout II alternator.
Both alternators use exactly the same body, the difference is the amperage output & the pulley, all you need to do is take old one out, swap the pulley & drop the other one in. The High output Suburban alternator delivers a respectable 94 amps of current vs. 63 amps for the scouts alternator, a 40% increase.
