both are buried at Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church, Cross Hill,
SC
Samuel C. Austin emigrated from Ireland through Charleston, SC harbor
and settled in Cross Hill, Laurens County. It is believed that he
was first married to a woman names Armatissa, as the 1850 census shows
both their names, with property valued at $1800. In 1860 the value
of Samuel and Martha's property was $1550.
Samuel served in the Confederacy as a Private, Company C, Infantry,
Holcombe Legion. Enlisted for one year in 1861, then re-enlisted
for "duration of war". He fought in battles in Mount Pleasant, SC
(Charleston) and Virginia. He was captured at "The Crater" in Virginia
and the batle is recorded in the following:
WAR OF THE REBELLION - OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE CONFEDERATE ARMIES
Series 1, Volume 42, Part 1, Page 933. He was one of eight men captured.
He and Martha had one son, James Alexander Austin b 3/27/1871 d 11/19/1908.
James married Mary Elizabeth Nash b 5/311870 d 6/10/1943. They had
3 children, Samuel Leonard Austin b 12/25/1882 d 4/24/1963. Married
Sarah Eudora Daniels (Landrum) b 4/14/1891 d 7/22/1950.
Evaline b 1894, married Joe Nabors. John Nash Austin b 1900 d
1930, m Dell Summerall d 3/1983.
