The following is a listing of headstones found in the Babb
/ Kellett Cemetery. This Cemetery is on Knickerbocker Road, between Fairview
Road and Greenpond Road, in Laurens County, South Carolina. It is located
on what was once the Old Indian Boundary Line, according to the book Babb
Families of America by Jean A. Sargent, of Laurel Maryland. The book states,
" Family tradition of Mrs. J. G. Buford of Greer, was that a British officer,
was killed in a skirmish here, and many Indians were killed at the same
time and were buried further down the creek. In all probability, Joseph
Kellett, a Revolutionary War soldier, his wife Jennet (Jane) and several
of their sons, also Revolutionary soldiers, are buried here in graves marked
by native stones, with no decipherable inscriptions. This was near "Kellett's
Station" a blockhouse or defense post during the War. (The Presence of
the Past - Epitaphs of 18th and 19th Century Pioneers in Greenville County,
South Carolina by Greenville Co. Hist. Society)."
This information was recorded 3/27/98 after brush
was removed and headstones were cleaned. There were many native stones
laid into rows. Many graves are scattered or covered by years of leaves
and limbs from nearby trees. There are at least 60 graves marked by native
stones and only 3 were found to have any markings etched into them.
Anyone going to this cemetery should first check
with the owner of the house up the hill. He is very careful not to let
just anyone go in there, due to vandalism in the past.
