Generation No. 1

1.  ROBERT4 CULBERTSON  (ANDREW3, ANDREW "IRISH ANDREW"2, WILLIAM1) was
born 1749 in Lancaster County, Pennsylviana, and died 1840 in Laurens County,
South Carolina.  He married (1) ELIZABETH PORTER.  He married (2) DOLLY
PLEASANT Abt. 1782 in Caswell County, North Carolina.

Applied for Revolutionary War Pension 18 October 1832, #S21722

Robert volunteered in 1780 under Capt. John Graves, General John Butler in
Caswell County North Carolina, Marched to Camden S.C., was there at Gates
defeat and returned home without discharge, after serving three months.

He volunteered again in the same year under Capt. John McMullin and Col.
James Williams and marched to the Cowpens, S.C. and there joined Col.
William Campbell and Col. Shelby and marched to Kings Mountain, and was in
the engagement at that place. Was discharged at Moravian Town (now
Winston-Salem) N.C. by Col. William Cleveland, after serving 2 months.

He again volunteered in the year 1781 under Col. Campbell and marched
through Caswell and Gulliford Counties, N.C., and was engaged in the
skirmish at Whitesill's Mill on Reedy Creek; served two months; volunteered
again in the same year under Col. Moore and General Butler and marched to
Wilmington, N.C. and was engaged in two skirmishes and returned home again
after an expedition of about two months.
Another source gives that he was listed in Capt. John Cochran's Company,
Saluda Regiment, Upper Battalion.
National DAR numbers are, 286383, 34971, 40658, 402720, 127265, 355561,
522860, 684892, the last two I have copies of.

In Hillsbourgh District of North Carolina, Caswell county Gloucester
District are listed in the 1790 census James, Joseph and William Culberson
and Major, John and William Pleasant.

We learn by tradition that Robert and his two brothers came from Europe to
Virginia before the Revolutionary War. Robert was a soldier in the
Revolution, being with George Washington. He was wounded in the side, a
ball
having struck his haversack and going through it and it's contents which
consisted of two pancakes. The haversack in all probability saved his life
as the ball only lodged in his side.
After the war, he came to Laurens County, South Carolina and settled on
Reedy River below Hoods Creek which was known by some people as Reedy Fork.
He afterwards moved about two miles up Hood's Creek and lived at a place
which he bought. This place afterwards came into the possession of Samuel
Hamilton.

Robert did not come from Europe with his two brothers to Virginia but that
is what is written by SOME biographer.

After Dolly's death he lived with his son John and at other times with his
son Alexander (Elic) around Reedy River in Laurens Co. as stated.

He accumulated very little wealth, however, he owned some land and in his
later days he drew a pension for Revolutionary War service. He died at his
son John's and was buried in the Elledge Graveyard about 1/4 mile from
Reedy
River. Four rocks, more than a foot high  marks his resting place. (This
must be prior to placing of DAR marker).

He was a moral man but it is doubted whether he was a religious man or not.
The impression is that he was 88-90 when he died. He was very active. The
story goes is that he could jump up "kick the ceiling above his head and
light on his feet". He was a very strong person. He was social and jolly.
He
was a farmer and probably did some work as a carpenter.

A Dedication of DAR Marker to Robert was made October 27, 1968 at the
Elledge Family Cemetery on Reedy River in Laurens County South Carolina.

In reference to the land, Robert deeded to John and Alexander, it is in
Deed
Book L page 95 in 1823. He reserved 10 acres and his house, until his death
and then it was to go to Alexander.

Dollie died before the 1830 census, as Robert was then living with John and
family.

>From tha Abstracts of Laurens County S.C. by Sara M. Nash from Deed Book B
page 283  5 August 1786 Robert Culbertson is witness to a deed. (he is
reported to have come to Laurens County in 1785 so this document places him
very near to that time.

Deed Book B page 316 5 March 1788 Robert is witness to a deed and this also
states that land borders him. The land mentioned is 280 acres on Little
River of Saluday near courthouse of Laurens granted 21 January 1785.
Bordered also by John Rogers, Nathan Barksdale and Nehemiah Franks and
Abraham Neighbors. You would assume he owned this land, if so it must have
been bought before 1785 and recorded in Charleston, but other sources
mention he did not own land he lived on for many years, but perhaps they
are
wrong.

Book B page 463 9 February 1789 he buys 100 acres for 60 pounds on Little
River, an original grant to James Beard in 1774. A James Culbertson was
witness and it must be his son? I think it was permisable to be a witness
before age 21. Dr. Lewis Culbertson also states Rober's brother James was
there so it must be him.

Book E page 379 5 November 1792 he sells the 100 acres on Little River for
100 pounds  sterling.

Book J page 126 10 October 1808 he buys more land from William Cole, 120
acres for $300. parts of a grant to Patrick Cunningham and part of one to
Thomas Richardson.

Deed Book K page 17 mentions that Robert has some land which borders on
Reedy River. (This is where he supposedly had land which he left to John
and
Alexander, retaining 10 acres and house where he lived for himself which
went to Alexander on Robert's death, but evidently gave to him sometime
after Dollie died as he is living with John in 1830.)

>From Will Book D-1 1814 Robert and James are mentioned as buyers at estate
sale. (this may be son James or brother James.)

In fact there were many such sales which Robert attended, so he must have
liked this sort of thing. Some of present day descendants do too, including
myself, my mother and uncle.
The below information is from "The Culbertson and Culberson Family" Dr.
Lewis Culbertson of Zanesville, OH published 1923.

3.a.) ROBERT CULBERTSON son of Andrew of Va. and grandson of Irish Andrew
of Shippensburg, Pa., says in his application for pension. "Was born in
Lancaster Co., Pa. In early life removed to Caswell Co., N. Car. Enlisted
in
Capt. John Grove's Co. of N. Car. Was in the battle of Camden; the defeat
of
Gen. Gates. Then re-enlisted in Col. Williams' Regt. Was in battle of
Cowpens and Kings Mt. Then reenlisted in Col. Campbell's Regt. Was in
skirmish at Wetzels Mills and two skirmishes near Wilmington. Claim or
pension made 1832. Annual allowance $40. Age 83 years. Private in N. Car.
militia. He removed to Laurens Dist., S. Car. in 1785." Received a grant
for
land on the Reedy River in 1785. (S. Car.). Can find no Col. Campbell with
N. Car. troops. There was Col. Campbell of Va. line.   The Census 1790, S.
Car. Dist. 96, Laurens Co., gives him 4 sons under 16 years, wife and 3
daughters. This tallies with the family records. Had 5
sons but one remained in Va. (Wm. P.) with his mother (first wife). Family
history says:
   Robert has a most interesting family history. "He entered the army at
the
beginning of the Revolution and served until the close. His wife heard
nothing of him during this time and supposed he was dead, remarried. At
close of the war he returned home--and his wife left her  second husband
and
would not live with either one. Her first husband then took his oldest son
and left his second son with his wife. The father and son then went to N.
Car. where he remarried. He was wounded at the Battle of Kings Mountain, S.
Car., for which he was pensioned."
   If Robert left his first wife in Virginia, then it must have been 1776
to
1777 as he served with the N. Car. troops. Putting the family version
together with facts from court records he must either have left her about
1776-7; or must have married his second wife about 1780-82 (note number of
children he had on Census 1790). Marriage bonds had to be filed in court in
N. Car. at this date and there is no bond of Robert Culbertson and Dolly
Pleasant. Census 1790 of N. Car. shows three Pleasants living in Gloucester
Dist. of Caswell Co. There are no Pleasants living in S. Car. 1790 Census.I
did not have divorce records of Caswell Co., N. Car., nor Va., examined for
Robert and Elizabeth Culbertson. On Census of 1790 Robert is given in
Laurens Co., S. Car., self and wife, 4 males under 16 years, and three
females. Family history says he only had two sons by first wife. I have
given children from family history. I am inclined to believe one or two
daughters were by the first wife. There were no marriage (court) records
kept in S. Car. until 1914.    John Grove was on Census 1790 in Rowan Co.
N.
Car. J. M. Barrie's Army and Navy of U.S. Vol. VII, p. 26, says "There were
two Col. Williams from N. Car., Col. James Williams commanded a regiment of
Rangers and Partisan Corps; and Col. John Williams the 9th N. Car. Line.
Battle of Camden the attack was led by Col. Williams' Volunteers."
   The only two James Williams on 1790 Census (N. Car.) in territory where
Culbertsons were located were in Rowan Co. (none in Caswell). Robert states
in his pension papers he "was in N. Car. Militia", so this shows he must
have been in James Williams Regt. Vol. II, p. 422, Abstracts of Augusta
Co.,
Va., by L. D. Chalkley, says, "Delinquents Augusta Co., Va. Levy 1779,
Robert Culbertson gone from county." This is Robert of Laurens Co., S. Car.

The information about Robert and Elizabeth and their children does not
appear correct and local Cooper and Culbertson researcher Joseph E. Cooper
(Laurens, SC) who shared much Culbertson research with me did not believe
it
either. Robert did serve several times and  almost from beginning to end
but
only short terms, not continually.

Notes for DANIEL CULBERTSON:
In Deed Book L, page 156, 1823 there is mention of his land being sold or
divided between his brothers. He apparently died unmarried about 1812-1814.
One mentioned he died in War of 1812, and another gave year as 1814, so
perhaps he died of injuries in was of 1812.

Book K page 34 15 September 1808 James sells to Jeremiah Glenn Jr. for $200
228 acres on Beaverdam Waters. Nancy Babb Culbertson signs over he Dower
Right.
Book K page 37 in 5 April 1805 James sells for $207.00 138 acres on branch
of Beaverdam.
Book K page 61 11 May 1802 he again sells some land for $300.on Beaverdam
Creek  Nancy signs her Dower Right Release.

These are not listed in order of dates of buying, they are listed as
recorded dates.

>From Will Book C-1 page 98 is listed a debt and unsettled account owed to
the estate of Thomas Burton by James Culbertson.

records of him, listed as Porter (one or two instances he is listed as
Peter, but since there was no Peter Culbertson, to my knowledge, I am
assuming spelling could not be right.)

He bought at the Estate of Marey Babb in June 1816, also at the estate of
Christopher Rowland in 1815.
David Motes estate in 1816.
>From Deed Book F page 33 21 October 1795 William P. Culbertson is a
witness
on a power of attorney deed.
In Will Book  A-1 page 147 he makes a payment to the Thomas Boyce estate.

At least through 1820 it appears he did not buy any land.

I have a "Genealogical Form", Lineage and Revolutionary Service from
Genealogical Records Committee, NSDAR for Isaac Newton Culbertson stating
he
is a son of William Porter Culbertson and Althia Jennings, and dates as
given on the Family Group Sheet. Some other Culbertson researchers had him
elsewhere.

John Hunter attorney for John Rutledge to Joseph and John Culbertson for 35
pounds , 153 acres, part of a 1300 acre grant to Thomas Shulbrick conveyed
to William Williamson then to said J. Rutledge on Reedy River (Brewers Old
Place) Witness: Lewis Saxon, James Parks, Joseph Downs JP

In Blount County Alabama Land Patent Book pg 142 there are 2 entries
January
4. 1853 listed # 10958 for John B. for the NE 1/4 of SW 1/4 and NW 1/4 of
SE
1/4 of Section 32.

On 22 August 1855 there are 4 entries for John P. (which I believe must be
the same person as I only find one in census, he doesn't have son John old
enough to be purchasing land)

# 24817 for the NE 1/4 of SE 1/4 and SE 1/4 of SE 1/4 and SW 1/4 of SE 1//4
and Se 1/4 of SW 1/4 of section 32. All total this makes up 3/4 of half of
Section 32.

On the parental consent of marriage for his daughter Sarah Manerva, the
signature is definitely a P. but on a 1840 census in Laurens County SC it
was listed there also as B. The P may have stood for Pleasant, his mothers
maiden name.

This is all located Section 32 Township 11 South, Range 4 East. Blount Co.
Alabama.

After getting a map of Blount County and finding the township lines etc, I
find that the land is in present day Etowah County, Alabama. Etowah County
was created about 1867.

I found a record for James D. Cooper in Company B 19th AL Inf. Enlisted 7
Feb. 1863 at Summitt for 3 yeas and was taken prisoner of War at Nashville
on 15 Dec. 1864 and released 18 June 1865. I do not know if this is the
same
person.

There is also a J.S.J Culbertson in Company B 12th Alabama Cavalry.

Samuels Chapel creek runs through the land and a church by same name is
located on the land as marked.
After finding his wife Elizabeth in Comanche Co. Tx. cemetery, her
tombstone
reads Elizabeth Culbertson wife of John P.

Notes for ALEXANDER CULBERTSON:
1795-1875

He was born near Reedy River below Hood's Creek in Laurens County, South
Carolina. He was raised a farmer and became a cooper by trade.

He moved to Franklin County Georgia near Carnsville in 1851 and moved to
Sand Mountain Alabama, was in Etowah County Alabama in 1870 and died in
Shelby County Alabama about 1875.

He did not have a really good education but could read, write and do
arithmetic which was fairly good for  the times.

It was said by family researchers that he owned land in Georgia but not in
Alabama. The information here was from Jennie V. Culbertson to Lelia Judd
to
Rose Parks. Jennie was member DAR for Robert and a genealogist.in Laurens
Co. SC.

8.  YOUNG JAMES6 CULBERTSON (JAMES5, ROBERT4, ANDREW3, ANDREW "IRISH
ANDREW"2, WILLIAM1) was born 11 February 1797 in Laurens County, South
Carolina, and died 11 August 1877 in Laurens County, South Carolina.  He
married SARAH (SALLIE) ROGERS 27 March 1821 in Laurens County, South
Carolina.

Notes for YOUNG JAMES CULBERTSON:
1797-1877

There were many Quakers in Laurens County and the last of them moved out to
Indiana about 1822 with 32 wagons. Many had left earlier but these were the
last.

The meeting house they left behind was named Union Meeting House and
Baptist, Methodist and Quakers (who didn't leave) worshiped there. In 1843
it was organized into a Baptist Church called Union Baptist Church and
Young
and wife Sallie were Charter members.

Elizer Culbertson, Dear Wife,
It is with pleasure I seat myself this evening to drop you a few lines to
let you know how I am getting along. I will say to you that I am about well
at this time and hope when this comes to your loving hand it may find you
enjoying good health. I do not know that I have anything very interesting
to
write you at present time. The camp is calm, yet there are some movements
we
do not precisely understand, but perhaps we will find out by waiting.
 

Elizer, I will say to you that there are two of our companys have been sent
some two or three miles from our camp to take charge of a battery at
Pineburg upon Pon Pon River, yet they may not stay there, and they may, we
do not know. However we will find out by waiting.

It is said that we have orders to move all our heavy baggage away from camp
up to Adams Run or at the Station, I do not know which. It is said by some
we will move up to the railroad, so if the Yankees attack Charleston or
Savannah we can go to the attack point. However we do not know about these
matters, we only have the opinion of some of the knowing men on this
matter.

We may be here some time, yet it is generally believed that the Yankees
will
cut loose somewhere on the coast in a few days. The future will only unfold
this truth and we can wait for its development, then we will know.

I must come to a close for this time by saying to you,

Dear Sister,

It is with pleasure that I seat myself this morning to inform you that I am
well at this time and hoping when these few lines comes to your hand that
they may find you well and doing well. Dear Sister, I received your kind
letter and was glad to hear from you, and to hear that you are ok. Dear
Sister, you wanted to know something about James and how he was put away.
He
got shot directly as we went into the fight. He was shot in the leg and
through the shoulder. After the fight was over we carried him to a house
and
me and 3 or 4 men stayed with him all night. He died about twelve O'clock
in
the night and we buried him the next day. He was put away the best we could
do it. The grave had planks in the bottom of it and his oil cloth was put
under him and his blanket was put around him, and there was planks put over
him to keep the dirt off of him. There was a headboard put up and his name
cut on it. He was put away as the best we could do it. Somebody got his
knapsack, his  hat and shoes but he didn't have anything in the knapsack.
He
appeared to be in a great deal of pain before he died, he died very easy.
Dear Sister, you must do the best you can for I know he has gone to a
better
world. He talked a right smart about dying. He prayed all of the time
nearly. I think he went happy. Dear Sister you must take it all the best
you
can, I know it is very hard to give him up but it can't be helped. It looks
like everybody will have to be killed before this war will end. I thought
some time back that the war would end but it don't look like it will ever
end. I hope and trust it will end before long so we can all come home and
stay with you all.

Dear Sister I want to see you and the children the worst in the world. Dear
Sister, I can say to you we see a hard time out here at this time. We don't
get 1/2 enough to eat. When it gets so they can't feed us I think it is
time
to quit fighting, and the weather is so hot we can hardly stand it. It's
almost like death to have to march.

Dear Sister you must do the best you can. I want to see Calvin and Wade and
the rest of you in the worst sort.

I must come to a close for this time, you must write as soon as you can, So
nothing more at this time I remain your brother until death.

Finding Henry's parents has not been successful as yet. The lady he married
lived in Laurens County, SC but it seems he did not live there previously.

If the naming of children as used in those times prevailed, his mother was
Mary and Father was James. There was such a couple in Union County and they
were old enough to have been the parents???

About 1845, sometime between the births of James D 1844 and John Wilson
1848
the family moved with his in laws to Blount (pronounced Blunt) County,
Alabama. Coopers did not buy land there (not found in records) but the
Culbertson's did. Their land was later in Etowah Co. when it was formed
about 1866.

Soon after this time the Coopers left Alabama and later were found in Tate
County MS in 1880 census and by the births of children of sons, they had
been in TN for a time, but in MS before 1875.

Dollie died in 1884 by Bible Records. I have assumed they lived in Tate
County till this event and then moved to Comanche Co. Texas. They were in
Tate Co. in 1881 when youngest daughter married. Oldest daughter married in
1886 late. If James and Ellen did not leave Tate Co. till then, then
Charlie
was born in Mississippi.

Henry, John Wilson, Pleasant Edward and Martha Ellen are all found in
records in Comanche County. Soloman is in Tate Co. on 1880 census and James
D. is not yet located after the 1860 census in Alabama, but his death date
is recorded in Bible, just don't know where, same with P.E.

Henry, John Wilson and wife  are buried in Comanche Co. as is Martha
Ellen's
1st husband... my G-Grandfather. Martha Ellen later moved to Mitchell Co.
after death of 2nd husband and is buried there.

The 1900 Comanche County census states that Henry's middle inital is H, but
is possibly a W. I have misread this before.  He is 83, a helpless invalid
living in the home of his daughter Mary and husband Seborn Hitchcock. It
also gives that he was born in SC, his father in NC and mother in Virginia.

Also in this household is Ples (Pleasant Edward) E. who is 42 and single.

He married in 1866 in Blount Co. Alabama and their first child was born
about 1868 in Tennessee, second child in Tennessee about 1870 but beginning
with third child born about 1872, 3 boys and 1 girl were born in
Mississippi. They may have had more in Mississippi before moving to Texas.
They were in Tate County Mississippi until the end of 1882, and maybe
later.

Land records in Comanche County Texas show him in Book S page 632
Book W page 119; Book W page 78 and Book V page 245. Also in Book Z page
186
and 286 and Book Y on page 598. I do not have copies of any of these land
deeds.

Found a marriage for John W. Cooper and Malinda M. Lewis 13 December 1889
in
Erath Co. TX. Could it be this John W.?

I have a biased view I suppose of Martha Ellen, as it came from my mother
only with her interpretation of her parents views, but here goes...
She seemed to be a strict, very serious, sharp tongued person. Not a loving
Grandma like their other one. Mamo, Rutha Mae did not like her and only
called her Mrs. Guthrie and didn't like her husband at all.
Charlie didn't have much affection for his mother either, I'm told, what it
was all about, I don't know.

She must have made crops and finished paying for the farm and her and A.B.
Guthrie evidently lived there until he died and then she moved to Mitchell
County, Texas. (This may not be true as Charlie, James Harlie and Bonnie
were listed on Brown county Texas census in 1900)
The deed says notes were paid in full in November 1894.

In my Mother's cousin’s handwriting, found in 1997, source not known at
present,
Martha Ellen Cooper was born in Alabama, May 25, 1860. She was married to
James S. Wiggins in 1881. To this union was born five children, Charles
Luther, J. Harlie, and Bonnie Mae. These 3 survive her, the other two dying
in infancy.

J.S. Wiggins died 24 January 1892.

She married A.B. Guthrie in 1895. He died 9 Oct.1937. One child was born to
this union, Pinkney W.

She came to Texas in 1880 to DeLeon, Comanche Co. Texas.

She came to Mitchell County in 1937 to make her home with her children.
Her parents were Henry W.L.S. Cooper born 12 January died Sept. 5, 1900.
Dolly M. Culbertson born 6 Dec. 1842 died 12 Sept, 1883 and married 27 Feb.
1842.

*There are several discrepancies in above information from what I had
previously from the Bible Record of Dolly Martha or Martha Ellen (sent to
me
by Evelyn Wiggins Brown) and the tombstone of Henry Cooper and the 1900
census showing Henry H. Cooper. She also did not come to Texas in 1880 as
she was married in Jan. 1881 in Tate Co. Mississippi. Her older sister did
not marry until in fall of 1886. I wonder if Ellen and James came to Texas
before her parents did? If they didn't, then Charlie was probably born in
Tate Co. Ms.

S. Hitchcock is listed just below Martha R. Locke (J.S.'s aunt) on his
brothers census, in 1880 Tate Co., MS list John Hitchcock age 42. Seaburn
is
46. There is a Willie age 10 and Benny age 2 who are shown to be nephew's
to
head of house, so are probably Seburn's. Hitchcock was the security on
James
S. marriage bond in 1881 in Tate Co. He later married Martha Ellen's older
sister Mary E. in 1886.

Except for documents in his Mother's Estate and his marriage, this land
deed
is the only other document I have found relating to James Steel.

paid as hereinafter stated by James S. Wiggins of Comanche Co., state
aforesaid have granted sold and conveyed and by these presents do grant

and convey to the said James S. Wiggins all that certain land and premises
originally granted to Houston and Texas Central Railway Company by the
State
of Texas situtated in the County of Comanche in the State of Texas on the
waters of Sabanna Creek about 12 miles N 6 degrees north from town of
Comanche being the south 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of section #27 in Block 2 by
virtue of land script #26/1415 more particularly described as follows.
Beginning at a point on west line of survey #17 for NE corner of this
survey
bears N 475 varas and from which stake a post oak 15 inches in diameter
marked HC bear N 52 degrees E 13 varas a post oak 12 inches in diameter
marked RR bears N 10 varas, thence west 950 varas to the center of the
survey. Thence east 950 varas to the SE corner of this tract, thence N 475

On page 435 following above are 3 sworn statements by authorities selling.
On page 436 is another document from Charles Dillingham to James S. Wiggins
giving same land description etc. and mentions land previously described in
Volume C pages 609-612 of Deed Records of Trustees and whereas all the
notes
described above have been paid and discharged. This document signed on 27th
day of October AD 1894 and continues with more sworn statements by various
officials.

Also on page 435 filed for record November 30th 1894 at 2 o'clock P.M. and
duly recorded the same day N.E. Palmer clerk by Ovg Delaw deputy.
This is listed in Comanche Co. Deed Records as J. W. Wiggins but document
itself itself says plainly James S. Wiggins.

On Comanche Co. Tax Records 1892 Abstract 465 Houston and Texas Central
Railway, M.E. Wiggins Hrs. 80 acres $300.00 value.

Another listing in Tax Records as Abstract 108, 160 acres but this is
apparently a mistake as it is listed elsewhere as belonging to Levi Fine.

In Comanche Co. Cemetery Book a listing was found for James S. Wiggins at
Sand Hill Cemetery. The survey there was made in 1976 but in 1990 the stone
was not found. It was described as a homemade sandstone with name carved
out. "Many of these were found at this cemetery but many had fallen over
with writing to the ground and were very heavy and could not be moved
without shovel/prybar etc. of which we had none." by authors of the
Cemetery
Book.

Notes for WILLIAM A. CULBERTSON, REV.:
1838-1905

William A. was first discovered when I received the marriage license of
John Wilson Cooper and Adeline Dupree in 1866. W.A. went on the marriage
bond with J. W. Cooper, his nephew.

Later I find him on census with his parents, then his marriage to J.A.M.
Allison is listed on marriage records and on 1870 census.

Next to John P. Culbertson in the 1860 census is a John Allison with
daughter Julianne the same age and birthplace as the J.A.M. Allison who
married William A. and I believe them to be the same person.

On this census in 1870 Etowah County Alabama he lives in Township 12, Range
3 and shows that he does have some land. His fathers land is in Township 11
Range 4.

Records show that W.A. Culbertson enlisted in Company B 12th Battilion of
Alabama Cavalry 26 July 1862 for 3 years at Chepultepec, Alabama. His widow
Mary J. made a pension application saying he died 26 May, 1905 and served
in
Co. D, 12th Alabama Cavalry.

In the Commission Register of County Officials of Etowah County, Alabama W.
A. Culbertson was elected Justice of the Peace 5 November 1877 and 2 August
1880. Evidently he served 2 terms in this office.
