I am doing research on Joseph POWER born March 6, 1780 in Laurens Co.
S. C. died June 10, 1875 in Cobb County, Ga. married ca 1812 first to Isabella
BALLEW born 1781 in S. C. He was my great-great grandfather. I want to
know who his parents were and siblings and what happened to the rest of
the family. All I am sure of are the names of two brothers, James &
Thomas POWER born in Laurens Co. also. All three of them came into Georgia
and settled in Cobb Co. I have a copy of a sheet of paper that was in the
old bible belonging to Samuel Wesley POWER born July 13, 1830 son of James
POWER and mother unknown (speculation of some that she was Cherokee Indian),
that has the following names that I have been trying to connect. Here is
all the information that was on this sheet of paper:
William POWER & Elen SCOTT Donegal,Ireland
John POWER imigrated to America 1761 Aug 8 married Rachel
DUVALL William POWER was born 19th March 1770
Elesabeth POWER was born 14th Feb 1772
Alexander POWER was born March 1774
Nancy POWER was born 21st April 1777 Daughter of John POWER
Sarah WOODALL was married the 19th of June 1776
John POWER was born 17th of November
Joseph POWER was born 6th March 1780
Samuel POWER was born 7th August 1781
James POWER was born 22nd January 1784
Thomas POWER was born 2nd April1785
Marget POWER was born 26th July 1786
Elen POWER was born 31th January
James POWER was born 15th April 1790
DEATHS:
James POWER died 9th April 1788
John POWER died 4th October 1809
Samuel POWER died 5th September 1829
Marget POWER died 20th January 1832
Sarah POWER died 4th May 1832
Thomas POWER died 18th January 1852
I know that the above Joseph POWER
born 1780, Thomas POWER born 1785 and James Power born 1790 were brothers.
I want to know if the other names are their siblings with the two top names
being maybe Grandfather William and then Father John. I have a book " Descendants
of Alexander POWER of Laurens County, South Carolina" compiled and published
by Lucien L. McNees in 1967.. The book is 195 pages including the index.
In this book there are three people shown with names and dates of birth
just like on this sheet of paper. They are William POWER born 1770; Elesabeth
POWER born 1772 & Alexander POWER born 1774 and the names are one after
the other at the top. Could the names from the sheet of paper out of the
bible and the people in the Alexander POWER book be the same family? I
do know that some of the people that are listed in this book still do live
in S. C. I went to Columbia to do research and found some families and
visited with them. Alexander POWER was married to Sallie MOORE and he bought
land on Warrior Creek a few miles from Laurens and they are buried in the
cemetery at Warrior Creek Baptist Church in the old part of the cemetery,
only sandstone mark their graves The author of the above book, Lucien L.
McNees, states that his ancestor Edwin POWER lived for awhile in S. C.;
his daughter, Marget POWER was born in S. C. 1776, she married Lewis ELLISON
in Tenn. abt 1796 and they moved to Winston Co., Miss. He says "My ancestor
came from Ireland, no doubt he was related to Alexander POWER". He goes
on to say "I am almost sure my POWER ancestor was related to Holloway POWER.
Lewis ELLISON named one of his boys Holloway Power ELLISON" Another book
I own is "The Power and Allied Families" by Paul Edwin Power written in
1979. This book also starts with POWER familes in Laurens Co, S. C. starting
with Pennington POWER born 14 Dec 1793; John Wesley POWER & Holloway
POWER just to name a few.. Unfortunately, in the POWER family, there are
so many members with the same name generation and generation until it is
almost impossible to trace without a DOB . I am in hopes that someone out
there will see this post and help me identify these names. If anyone knows
of any other books that have been done on the 'POWER" Family, please let
me know. If you have done any genealogy, have any history whatsoever on
the POWER family or know of any one who has, please notify me.
