John B. Power was a merchant/mechanic in Laurens Co., SC.
His shop fixed tools, wagon wheels, wagons, made coffins and
whatever else that was needed. He sold supplies to the
surrounding community. The shop was also a place where the
mail was brought to and sent from. It was known as the
Powers Shop. Powers Shop, Laurens Co., SC was the center
of much activity. Many names are listed in John B. Power's
accounting ledger. I have transcribed the names of all the
people who did business with John B. Power at
Powers Shop, Laurens Co., SC and in Arkansas. I have
put the names on my home page so that everyone can
check to see if they had relatives living in that area of
Laurens Co. from 1847-1858.
In the fall of 1858 John B. Power sold most of his holdings
and moved his family to Arkansas.
The reason for the move is unclear. Family tradition has it that
there was an outbreak of malaria in SC. Also, the talk of the
unrest and a possible war might have inspired him and his family
to move west. Why they picked Arkansas is unclear. They did
have other relatives already living in Arkansas but they also had
relatives living in other states too.
After arriving in Arkansas he soon started up his business again
there. He lived out his life in Pike Co., AR and died January 23, 1890.
John B. Power was married to Louisa Eliza Moore about 1840 in
Laurens Co., SC. They had the following children: Joseph B. 1841,
Barnett 1842, Fleming Moseley Nov. 16 1844, Julia G. 1847,
Lucinda P. 1849, Stephen Wesley Jan. 9, 1851 and Eliza 1853.
All of the children were born in Laurens Co., SC.
Today Powers Shop, Laurens Co., SC is called a historical place.
Stephen Wesley Power b: Jan. 9, 1851 near the Gray Court House,
South Carolina and moved with his family and other families to
Arkansas when he was 7 years old.
In Pike county Arkansas, the Power family built a saw mill. They
supplied lumber, coffins and other merchandise to the people in
that area. The ladies in the Power family made the linings that
went into the coffins. After living in and around Murfreesboro,
Arkansas for many years, Stephen W. Power moved his family
to Indian Territory Oklahoma (now Wayne, McClain Co., OK) in
1905. We have been told that they moved because of much
illness in that area of Arkansas at the time. He built a cotton
gin in Wayne, McClain Co., OK. With his son Charles T. Power,
he started a new business and life. Stephen W. Power died
January 17, 1929 in Wayne,OK. Charles T. Power continued
the family business until his own death in 1960.
