A PROUD HERITAGE CONTINUED
Lafayette is referred to as the
of Acadiana due to it's location at the cross roads of I-10 and I-49.(See red area of Map)
It is situated on the edge of a terrace on the southeast side and a delta on it's northwest side, made by the mighty Mississippi River hundreds of years ago. This delta slopes into the area about 15 miles to the east of Lafayette known as the Atchafalaya Basin. Lafayette is also 35 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and has a humid subtropical climate due to the warm weather patterns from the gulf.
The geographical area also includes as much diversity, in it's flora and fauna as it does with the people who settled the land. With it's variety of animals, forests, prairies as well as the many swamps, marshes and bayous meandering through it, the settlers had an abundance of materials to work with and foods to eat. One of which is the now famous crawfish and another is the aligator.
