There it was, smack dab in the middle of a lucious, velvety green lawn; one spindly long leg forever tucked up as if to flee, pinkly glaring. I was only a small child but I knew instinctively that I would never see anything as blatantly ugly and garrish again. Thus began a lifelong resentment of all things pink, plastic and birdlike.
It was a PLASTIC PINK FLAMINGO !!! Don't get me wrong. I am a true bird-lover and I think the real bird, the real pink flamingo is a beautiful, graceful creature and a pleasure to behold, but to me those plastic dummies are a travesty and an insult to the glorious bird it was patterned after.
My children take a perverted pleasure in pointing them out to me as we drive by a yard where one of these things is displayed. Just what exotic land are they trying to recreate on their front lawns anyway ? Do they think they are succeeding ?
I have had nightmares in which I awaken one morning to find my lawn covered with hundreds of shiny pink plastic flamingos. Sometimes the dream seems so real that I have to go look out my window to reassure myself that it was only a dream.
Anyway my MISSION is to raise awareness of this abuse of well-manicured lawns everywhere, and to hopefully rid suburbia of them forever. Since I've put up this page I have discovered that there are a great many folks out there who absolutely adore their pink plastic flamingos ! Go figure !
