CD 04 "The Other Side of Town"

was released in June, 2000.

It includes the following 14 tunes:

Panama, "A Characteristic Novelty", was composed as a tango by William H. Tyers, published in 1911. It was used by the famous vaudeville actress, Aida Overton Walker and her Panama Girls. The tune should not be confused with Panama Rag by Ch. Seymour.

Now Is The Hour (Maori Farewell Song). Composed by Maewa Kaihan 1913, based on the traditional New Zealand song Hearere Ra. During WW II the tune was often played when naval ships left Australian ports! A Bing Crosby hit w ith Ken Darby Choir in 1948. The melody has a Swedish religious text: "Se till mig, Gud".

I Have A Friend, A Precious Friend The lyrics were published in England during the 1850's. The melody, a traditional folk-song, is originally written in waltz time but we play it in 4/4, arranged by our trumpeter Esbjörn Olsson. There is a Swedish text by the famous Lina Sandell: "Jag har en vän, en trofast vän, som evigt älskar mig".

Mobile Stomp was one of the eight tunes recorded for Colombia by Sam Morgan´s band in 1927. It seems to be a 4/4 beat version of The Waltz You Saved For Me.

Dallas Blues was composed in 1912 by a white violin player from Oklahoma, Hart A. Wand. It was one of the first published blues compositions.

Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula (Hawaiian Love Song) was published 1916. It was composed by the piano roll artist Pete Wendling (1888-1974). The song was introduced by Al Jolson in Robinson Crusoe Jr at the Winter Garden, New York. It was recorded by George Lewis´ band with Elmer Talbert on trumpet for Good Time Jazz at Cosimo´s studio, New Orleans, June 5, 1950. The young Swedish Imperial Band recorded it in 1962.

My Happiness was composed by Borney Bergantine 1933. Connie Francis had a hit with this song in 1959, but we play it more like the Fats Domino version.

Hindustan (Oliver G. Wallace- Harold Weeks), composed 1917, first recorded 1918. The tune was used in a show, "Joy Bells" in 1919.

Far Away Blues is a Fletcher Henderson tune, issued under the pseudonym George Brooks in 1924. It was recorded by Clara and Bessie Smith, accompanied by Fletcher Henderson, piano.

South (1924) is one of the Kansas City bandleader Benny Moten´s most popular tunes. In 1949 it was recorded by Big Eye Louis Nelson Delisle under the title Pork Chop.

In My Heart There´s A Yearning (I mitt hjärta det finnes en längtan) is a Swedish tune, composed about 50 years ago by Lennart Jernestrand, even today the finest pianist in Swedish religious music. Bunk Johnson once said that if there is a melody, you can play it "New Orleans style". This walz does have a beautiful melody and we try to give it a New Orleans touch.

Ting-A-Ling ("Waltz of the Bells") by Addy Britt & Little Jack Little,1926.

The Other Side Of Town, composed by Peter Starr, was performed in Sweden by Sten-Åke Cederhök (När lyktorna tänds på andra sidan bron).

Get Out Of Here is supposed to be a Kid Ory tune. It was one of Buddy Bolden´s favorite numbers.
