This is my revised roster of Company B, Sixteenth South Carolina. It is drawn from a wide group of sources. There are problems with it. I have attempted to show all men so some duplication is possible. Augustus Anderson is at Greensboro for the Surrender and in Rock Island prison. Thomas Brown is dead when Thomas Browne surrendered. L.W. and W. Lewis Bridges may be the same man as maybe E.B. and Erwin Garrison. Wm., Wm. B. and Wm. M. Griffith are a guess as is John T. and Thos. Howard.

Of the 188 men of Company B: 18 were captured; 8 at Franklin, 6 at Missionary Ridge, which is known by several names, and one each at Citronelle, Alabama, Yazoo, Mississippi and Nashville. The place of capture for one soldier is unknown.

22 were Killed in Action, 35 Died of Illness, and 3 Died in Prisons. Those killed in action died as follows: 13 at Franklin, 3 at Atlanta, 2 at Jonesboro, 2 at Lovejoy, and one each at Kennesaw Mt. and Nashville.

In addition to the 22 killed, 19 members were wounded. Although it is difficult to see who was wounded at Franklin and who at Nashville, there appear to be 4 at Franklin and none at Nashville, 6 at Rescea, 3 at Atlanta and one each at Lookout Mt., Pine Knot Mt., Kennesaw Mt., Jonesboro and Lovejoy. It is unknown at this time where one man was wounded.

There were 28 men present at the Surrender. 19 attended the 1883 meeting where the colors were brought from hiding. 3 members of B Company that were captured, galvanized or fought for the Union. Seven men came from Anderson and one from Spartanburg, the rest from Greenville. One man is carried as having deserted. Many men were listed as having deserted the 16th but most show up again. This man in B Company remains unaccounted for as do a number of others in other companies. I consider this to be one of the strong companies of the regiment or one of the lucky ones.

Many of the men from B Company, served in Company A of the Third State Troops from Jun of 1862 until January of 1863. This unit of State Troops was commanded by Captain John Charles. Numbering with those serving in both units are William Pearson, J.N. Elrod, E.B. Garrison, William Griffith, J.A. Hamby, J.A. Moon J.R. Rodgers, J.A. Smith, Miles C. Spillers and others. After the war of Northern Aggression, my great-grandfather returned to his home then known as Slabtown in what is now Anderson County, SC. Soon after the southern states were allowed to form militias, he received a commisison as Captain in what was known as the Mauldin or Butler Guards. He farmed all his life up until his death.

As a side note, his Grandfather, Benjamin Griffith, my Great-Great-Great Grandfather, moved to what is now the Mauldin, SC area in 1784 from Pennsylvania and was the first white settler in the area as he received a 100 acre land grant to move there. He obtained a total of 967 acres while farming there with his brother Eli. This is the property that is along the Laurel Creek in Mauldin, SC.

Also from Official Confederate rolls that I got from the SC state archives it mentions that on April 9, 1865 the 24th SC Inf. was consolidated with the 16th SC Inf. and formed the 16th and 24th (Consolidated) SC Inf.

Beam, G.W. P B Wounded 9/21/63 (CSR)
The Beam connection began with an entry in the African American Confederate Pensioners published by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.

(South Carolina's African American Confederate Pensioners 1923-1925, Dr. Alexia Jones Helsley, S.C. Dept. of Archives and History, page 71, SMB)

The entry was for Morgan, Alford (one of my wife's ancestors). It reads as follows:

MORGAN, Alford
Newberry, Newberry County
Cook under three Beam Boys, CSA
Served 1861 - April 1865
Applied 6 April 1923; approved 23 April 1923
Affidavits: J.H. Alewine and E.S. Cromer
Application #8607: Alford Morgan, married, day laborer, 75 years old, died 22 May 1923 in Newberry County. He was born in 1848 and was the son of Salley and Manas Morgan.

This led me to search for Beam families in Newberry - there are very few, but I found this information in Eleanor Clyburn Wicker's 1850 Census Newberry County, South Carolina with Genealogical Data on Many Families (1985 Edition Revised):

A researcher of Newberry supplied me with information that "12 men with the surname Beam served in SC for Confederacy" and she gave me the names of six of them, broken into three sets of twos. Of those, G. W. Beam and R. H. Beam seemed the most likely match to the 1850 Census information.

(G.) William Beam Reuben Hamilton (Hampton) Beam

Based on their ages in that 1850 Census, their families connection to Greenville and to Newberry - I feel pretty confident that they are two of the three Beam Boys mentioned in Alford Morgan's Confederate Pension Application. I still don't know who the third Beam Boy might have been. Any help connecting the information would be appreciated.

You have listed Charles A. Davenport of B/16 S.C. as a possible member of Company E, H/L. I don't believe they are the same man. I have my roster as follows: Davenport, Charles J ("Charley"). Original PVT Company E, age 18. Present until WIA (arm) Seven Pines [Fair Oaks] 31 May 62; in hospital to 3 Jul 62; at Gen Hosp in Richmond and Farmville (chronic diarrhoea and ulcers of the leg of 7 months duration, due to "spurious vaccination) 25 Jul-21 Sep 63; slightly WIA (left arm) Wauhatchie [Lookout Valley] 28 Oct 63; POW near Westover Church Va 7 Aug 64; at Bermuda Hundred to 22 Aug 64; arrived Point Lookout 24 Aug 64; paroled and exchanged at Aiken's Landing [Va] 17 Mar 65; no further record [probably on sick furlough to S.C.]; resident of White Sand (or Honey Path Post Office), Greenville Dist; b. 29 Aug 42; d. Yeargin ca Nov 63; died in Confederate Hosp, Kingston, Ga 5 Apr 64; resident Greenville Dist. [He is probably buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Kingston. There are over 400 unmarked graves in the Cemetery; only a handful are marked in the enclosed cemetery. A beautiful spot, just uphill from the depot] [There is no entry in Compiled Service Records of the Legion for Davenport, but he is mentioned in the Memory Rolls and a printed roster of the company. Yeargin did not enlist until 27 Nov 63, and they apparently exchanged almost immediately thereafter. Davenport's father is buried at Fork Shoals Bap, and it is certainly possible that his family had him shipped home, and buried him in the church cemetery, which has a large number of unmarked graves]

Willis Davenport did indeed serve in both Company E of the Legion and B/16 S.C. Given the fact that he was only 17 in September 1862, he is not the man buried at Standing Springs Bap. The dates for Willis Augustus Davenport at the Standing Springs Cemetery are probably for the veteran's father, given that he is listed as b. 11 Feb 08, and died 11 Mar 81. My bio is as follows Davenport, Willis, Jr. Enl [Company E, H/L] Camp Griffin 7 Aug 61, age ca 16. * All the armies of the Confederacy were reorganized in April of 1862. Many officers lost positions and resigned or enlisted in other units. Wm. Faulkner, the Southern writer and Nobel winner, addresses this in Satoris, a novel that is a thinly hidden biography of his grandfather, a Colonel in Confederate Service who lost his position. Most of these men chose to serve in the ranks and more than a few former Captains and Colonels died in those hallowed ranks as private soldiers.
