This is my revised roster of Company E, Sixteenth South Carolina. It is drawn from a wide group of sources. There are problems with it. I have attempted to show all men so some duplication is possible. To be noted with the problems are the difficulties in telling who is who with the Tollison's and the Smith's. B.R. and Berry Bagwell is the same man but it would have been difficult for him to surrender given the known records. Abner Davis is probably A.A. Davis. Robert McCleery maybe one man or a father and his son. J.I. Holliday is a very difficult man to trace and with good reason. W.A. Puckett is another spelling nightmare and he and J.M. Smith seem to have multiple fates, as does J.L. or John Walker. Jess and J.A. Vaughn are probably the same man. E is the only company that has stats available assembled by a member of the Sixteenth. These are available in the Aftermath Section for comparison. I have made some notes on them at the end of this section. Of the 187 men of Company E: 39 were captured; 16 at Missionary Ridge and its attendant actions, 10 at Franklin, 3 at Salisbury, N.C., 2 each at Egypt, Mississippi, Nashville, and Rough and Ready, Ga. One man was captured at Talladega, Alabama and 3 were captured in places that are unknown. 20 were Killed In Action, 36 Died of Illness, and 12 Died in Prisons. Those killed in action died as follows: 11 at Franklin, 2 at Marietta and Decatur and one each at Atlanta, Jackson, Mississippi, Kennesaw Mt., and Pine Mt. In addition to the 20 killed, 23 members were wounded, several on multiple occasions, thus the difference in number of wounds and men wounded. Although it is difficult to see who was wounded at Franklin and who at Nashville, there appear to be 11 at Franklin and none at Nashville, 8 at Decatur, two each at Kennesaw Mt., and Atlanta, and one each at Pine Mt., Jonesboro, and Dallas. There were 34 men present at the surrender. 11 attended the 1883 meeting where the colors were brought from hiding. One member of E Company that was captured, galvanized and fought for the Union. All the men appear to have come from Greenville County. No one is carried as having deserted. Col. McCullough in his report, which may be viewed in the Aftermath Section, states the following: 156 men were enrolled in the company during the war; of these, 32 Died of illness, 16 were killed, and 8 Died in Prisons. 91 names were carried on the roll at the time of Surrender. 31 were captured and 38 were wounded. As you can see his stats differ from those reflected in the records, I have been able to view. A portion of the problem relates to how men are listed. During the Atlanta Campaign in particular, it is very difficult to tell if a person died of wounds or died of illness. Men were often sent home to recover from wounds and in turn died there. These men are listed as Died of Illness. Other problems appear as well. E Company is the only company for which stats were prepared, that can be located. (See Below) |

Many of the men from E Company, served in Company B of the Third State Troops from June of 1862 until January of 1863. This unit of State Troops was commanded by Captain W.R. Berry. Numbering with those serving in both units are William Autery, J.C. Cothran, Obadiah Davenport, J.E. Holiday, Tully Holiday, George Nieghbors, Martin Sims, Owen Stone, W.R. Sullivan, George Thomison (Thompson), Edward Tolison (Tollison) and others. Some would join other units, others would find the way back to the 16th. You will note that almost every surname mentioned in E Company of the Sixteenth is to be found on Bil's roster listed below. His name was Berry Bagwell of Company E. As I have many relatives originating from Laurens County, South Carolina, the following information may be helpful to someone else perusing your website.
Berry's father was Mr. William H. Bagwell (of Laurens Co.) and his mother was Ms. Elizabeth Rowe of North Carolina.Their children were, John, born 1818, Joseph (or Joel), born 1820, Berry, born 1822 and died May 13, 1906, James Wiley, born 1824, Nancy, born 1825, Kenedy, born 1826, Larkin B., born 1829, Sarah, born 1832, and Susan, born 1835, all in Laurens County, South Carolina. Berry married Ms. Elmina Ware January 16, 1851. James Wiley Bagwell is my great, great grandfather and is buried in the little cemetery (on land donated by him) at Bradshaw, Taylor County, Texas. (Please note the following correction: I made a mistake in my e-mail of yesterday concerning James Wiley Bagwell, brother of Berry Bagwell. My great, great grandfather is indeed James Wiley Bagwell, but the one born in 1848 and the son of John Bagwell, born in 1818, Berry's oldest brother. It seems from my book that John named his second child and first son after his younger brother James Wiley.) Berry and Elmina had five children, Sarah, born 1854, Susan, born 1857, Nancy, born 1859, Mary, born 1861, and John, born in 1867. I have further information on Berry's siblings and their children if someone might be interested. E-Mail Descendant | . |

Henderson's of Early S.C, Robert Henderson. Henderson's of Early S.C. E-Mail Descendant and author. Grave of Buried: McGavock Cemetery Franklin, Tennessee Grave of, Mount Olivet, Nashville, Tn. and he is listed in McGavock as well. From Robert H. Henderson, author of Hendersons of Early S.C. pt.3 In the 16th there were 2 Hendersons, the first, named E. Starling Henderson of Laurens and the second, Ely Henderson of Greenville. We have considerable amount of information on both of these individuals. Unfortunately an earlier researcher had assumed them to be one and the same individual. Therefore they merged the names Ely Starling Henderson. After that, it seems that the names became the same individual. Unless someone can prove otherwise, I would suggest that they be referred to as E. Starling Henderson from Laurens (not Ely Starling Henderson) Ely Henderson from Greenville (not Ely Starling Henderson) At least we know that this is correct. The following is a quote from Mauldin Legacy,"Two of the most important battles of the 16th South Carolina Regiment in Tennessee were fought in the areas of Franklin and Nashville. The record shows the S. Ely Henderson of Company E. --16th SC Regiment as being buried in grave 4 in McGavock Cemetery at Franklin. On the grave it states he was killed in battle in Nashville, Tennessee in 1864. His body was not sent home until 1964 , when one of his grandchildren Paul Henderson, received this information, the gravesite was unknown." Graves at McGavock do not usually carry a normal headstone. The stone at McGavock is the small numbered stone, like most of the stones in that cemetery. The stone at Nashville is the normal stone. | . |

Twenty years later, on May 16th 1885, Nimrod received the cemetery property back, as a deed in trust, where four generations of Traynhams were already buried. A hundred years later, the family found that deed to allow them to preserve that property, still in trust and still an active, private cemetery.) My thanks to Mann Batson for the following: From The Enterprise and Mountaineer 1-21-85 I have been looking over the roll of Company E, 16th S.C. Regiment and think, perhaps, the following facts may interest some of our old comrades, many of whom are subscribers to your paper: The Company entered service with fifty-two men-rank and file. We received during our service one hundred and four recruits; four joined us by transfer from other commands, making a total of one hundred and sixty. Of this number, thirty-two died in service, eight died in prison, and sixteen were killed making the total deaths, fifty-six. Twenty died of fever, seven of diarrhea, four of measles, and one of consumption. During service five were discharged for disability, four were exempt by law and four were transferred to other commands, making the number discharged thirteen. Those added to the fifty-six lost by death left on our roll at the time of surrender ninety-one names. Counting these and the thirteen discharged made at the surrender one hundred and four survivors. Eleven have died since the war leaving at this time (December 22, 1884) ninety-three survivors. Eighty-two of these are citizens of this state and eleven of other states, distributed as follows: Greenville County, forty-four; Laurens, fifteen; Anderson, thirteen; Abbeville, four; Pickens three; Newberry, one; Barnwell two; total in this state, eighty-two. Alabama has as citizens, two; Kentucky, one; Texas, three; Tennessee, two; Mississippi, two; Florida, one. Total in other states, eleven. There were fifty-seven members under twenty-five years of age, of whom nine died. There were fifty-five members between twenty-five and thirty-five years of age, of whom eighteen died. There were forty-eight members over forty-eight years old, of whom five died. It appears from the above that the most fatal age was just in the prime of manhood-from twenty-five to thirty-five years of age.

* All the armies of the Confederacy were reorganized in April of 1862. Many officers lost positions and resigned or enlisted in other units. Wm. Faulkner, the Southern writer and Nobel winner, addresses this in Satoris, a novel that is a thinly hidden biography of his grandfather, a Colonel in Confederate Service who lost his position. Most of these men chose to serve in the ranks and more than a few former Captains and Colonels died in those hallowed ranks as private soldiers. |
