This is my revised roster of Company H, Sixteenth South Carolina. It is drawn from a wide group of sources. There are problems with it. I have attempted to show all men so some duplication is possible. "H" appears to be a hard luck company but the evidence is more circumstantial. It had the most true desertions of all the companies of the Sixteenth. However, it seems to have suffered less in all other categories. I have chosen not to classify any man who was returned to the ranks or died in the ranks as a deserter.

Of the 147 men of Company H: 16 were captured; 2 men were captured at Atlanta, Chatthoochee, Franklin, Jonesboro, Kennesaw Mt., and Missionary Ridge. One each was captured at Nashville and Yazoo and in one case the place of capture is unknown.

Only 9 men were Killed in Action, 21 Died of Illness, and 1 Died in Prison. Those killed in action died as follows: 5 at Atlanta, 2 at Lovejoy, and one each at Resaca, and Franklin.

In addition to the 9 killed, 10 members were wounded, several on multiple occasions. Thus the difference in number of wounds and men wounded. Although it is difficult to see who was wounded at Franklin and who at Nashville, there appear to be 3 at Franklin and none at Nashville, 3 were wounded at Atlanta and 4 at Kennesaw Mt., one each at Lovejoy and for one the place is unknown

There were 17 men present at the surrender. Only 3 attended the 1883 meeting where the colors were brought from hiding. Two members of E Company that were captured galvanized or fought for the Union. All the men appear to have come from Greenville County. Seven are carried as having deserted.

Company H, Sixteenth South Carolina and Company D, Third State Troops, 6-62 to 1-63

Many of the men from H Company, served in Company D of the Third State Troops from January of 1862 until January of 1863. This unit of State Troops was commanded by Davis Hodge, a former Captain of Company H, Sixteenth S.C.V.. Numbering with those serving in both units are William Burns (Bums), George Anders (Andrews), John F. Hightower, Robert Grumbles, George Thompson, and others. Some would join other units, others would find the way back to the 16th. You will note that many surnames mentioned in this Company of the Sixteenth are to be found on Bil's roster listed below.

I found out a lot of information on him as I dug into the family history a little bit. He lost his right arm at Kennesaw, and came home and found farming difficult, so he took up schoolteaching. He was also a court crier for Greenville County. He was born in 1831 and died in 1879 after catching a fever. He was married to Elizabeth Staton Hood and they had 10 children. I have a great picture of him taken just before he left for the war, just let me know what I need to do to get it to you. There are several Hoods and Hightowers buried in this little cemetery, and I'll go back and see if any served in the 16th for you. There is one grave there with a spire on it, and a touching memorial to Jeremiah Hawkins. It says that he served with the 4th S.C. and was mortally wounded on July 21,1861 near the old stone bridge at First Bull Run. It's a great memorial.

* All the armies of the Confederacy were reorganized in April of 1862. Many officers lost positions and resigned or enlisted in other units. Wm. Faulkner, the Southern writer and Nobel winner, addresses this in Satoris, a novel that is a thinly hidden biography of his grandfather, a Colonel in Confederate Service who lost his position. Most of these men chose to serve in the ranks and more than a few former Captains and Colonels died in those hallowed ranks as private soldiers.
